Youth and Reserves Results

Wolves under 19s and under 17s lost to Man Utd’s Academy teams on Saturday.
The under 19s started brightly and with less than five minutes gone Mark McChrystal headed against the post. Then Leon Clarke put Wolves ahead when he ran onto a Lewis Gobern pass to convert from near the penalty spot. United leveled the scores midway through the second half when the Wolves defence was deceived by a cross that was headed in by a Man Utd striker. Then they took the lead with ten minutes left and got a third just before the end.
The under 17's took the lead after 57 minutes when John Steele’s free-kick took a wicked deflection on its way into the net. But just a minute later Man Utd equalised and then took the lead in the 72nd minute.

Wolves reserves continued their winning streak with a 4-2 victory over Preston and made it five wins out of five. They have now joined Huddersfield Town at the top of the Avon Insurance Premier League, Huddersfield staying top as they have a slightly better goal difference.
Rae put Wolves ahead after 11 minutes, with a fierce 30-yard drive past Preston keeper Andy Lonergan. Jones got Wolves second with another long-range shot in the 16th minute, almost from the same spot that Rae scored from, he lofted the shot beyond Lonergan’s dive and into the corner of the net.
A mistake by Lonergan on the hour led to Wolves third goal. Ward intercepted a poor clearance from the keeper and laid the ball into the path of Rae who drove his shot into the top corner from 22-yards for his second of the match.
Preston got a goal in the 74th minute, Anderson passed through to David Healy who gave Oakes no chance. Then Abbott got another goal for Preston six minutes from the end with a powerful header from Eric’s Skora’s cross.
Branch wrapped things up when he ran on to a deep cross from Marc Edworthy and headed the ball over Lonergan.

Wolves Reserves: Oakes, Edworthy, Slater, Rae (Walters 79), Ingimarsson, Clyde, Clingan, Andrews, Branch (Clarke 90), Jones, Ward (Gobern 72).
Unused subs: Solly, Fitter.

Injury and Suspension

Striker George Ndah had a scan on his troublesome hamstring earlier today and the results have shown there is no serious damage. The problem saw him substituted after scoring two goals on Saturday. He will rest for a couple of days and then let the physios work on him, boss Dave Jones is hoping Ndah will be  ok for Wolves match against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Denis Irwin has picked p his fifth booking of the season which means he will be suspended for Wolves trip to Brighton next month. The defender was shown a yellow card by referee Mike Dean shortly before half-time on Saturday and must serve a one-match ban.

FA Cup Draw

Wolves have drawn Rochdale in the 5th round of the FA Cup, the match will take place at Molineux on the 15th or 16th of February.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after Wolves progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup: "We've said all week that if we could get people to come off their back four and turn and go at them then we could get some reward.
"If you've got players who can do that, it can cause defences problems - and that's what we did.
"What has happened with George is he has got himself a lot fitter. He's had five games now which I think is the longest he's ever had here.
"I think we've changed his mentality a little bit because when he has picked up an injury recently, because of the setbacks he got early on here, he felt every one was going to be long term.
"He has toughened himself up on that a lot and now he is starting to show the form that the previous manager thought of him when he bought him."
"I think the first half was very competitive and we said beforehand that the team that wins more individual battles will be the team that goes on and gets something.
"Everything we've asked of them today, they've done. We didn't allow some decisions to rattle us and we've kept our composure. There were a lot of meaty challenges going in."

Team News

Wolves: winger Kevin Cooper is doubtful after injuring his foot in training and George Ndah is facing a late fitness test, the striker returned to training on Thursday after recovering from a slight hamstring injury he sustained against Wimbledon but was unable to complete the session due to continued soreness in his leg.
Lee Naylor has recovered from a knee injury and will start.

Leicester: are short of strikers with Trevor Benjamin (hamstring) and James Scowcroft (abdomen) both facing late fitness tests.
Top scorer Brian Deane is also out with a broken cheekbone, so Paul Dickov could be partnered by England Under 19 striker Tommy Wright.
Centre back Gerry Taggart is both injured and suspended, so Frank Sinclair could move into the centre of defence.
Check out the opposition on The Cunning Fox website.

Esnaider Leaves

Argentinian striker Juan Esnaider has left Molineux after a week long trial, without Wolves boss Dave Jones getting to see the 29-year-old in a competitive game. It was planned for him to play in Monday’s reserve fixture against Preston at Telford, but because of new regulations regarding the transfer windows that have been brought in this season, the international clearance required for Esnaider to have played against Preston would have meant he couldn’t get clearance to play for another club, other than an English one, until the end of the season when the window reopens.
It was a risk that the player and his advisors weren’t prepared to take especially as there is interest in him from Spain and from his home country Argentina.
Michael Branch has returned from his trial at Preston. They have decided not to pursue their interest in Branch after they had signed South African international George Koumantorakis.

Injury Update

Lee Naylor (knee ligament) and George Ndah (hamstring) returned to training today and are expected to be in the squad for Saturday's FA Cup 4th round tie at Molineux against Leicester.
Alex Rae is hoping to be fit enough to be on the bench against Leicester after injuring his back playing tennis.

Branch Out On Trial

Wolves striker Michael Branch is going to play for Preston's reserves against Bury on Wednesday with a view to making a loan move.
He has been told by boss Dave Jones that he doesn't fit in with his plans and he can leave Molineux if a suitable offer is made.
Preston boss Craig Brown is desperate to sign a new striker and if Branch impresses he could make a move to Lancaster on loan with a view to a permanent deal.

Ince On Future

Wolves midfielder Paul Ince has answered recent rumours that he was going to retire at the end of this season. He has revealed he will leave Molineux if Wolves win promotion, but says he would like to stay if they fail to reach the Premiership.
Ince said: "I came on a one-year contract and at the time I couldn't see myself playing after that, but depending on what happens to the club then I'll have to see.
"If we went up to the Premier League then that'd definitely be it for me, I think, because that's what I came here to achieve," he added on the club's website. "If not, then hopefully if the club still wants me and I feel OK then I'd look to stay another year."

20th January 2003

Striker On Trial

Wolves have got Argentinian born striker Juan Eduardo Esnaider on a week’s trial, starting training tomorrow with the Wolves squad. The 29 year old is currently available for a free transfer as he is currently out of contract. He most recently played for FC River Plate and previously played for Real Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Athletic Madrid, Espanol and Juventus. He holds a European Cup Winners Cup medal which he won with Zaragoza during the 94/95 season.

George Ndah has missed training due to a hamstring problem, so Esnaider's arrival is well timed as Wolves strikers Dean Sturridge and Nathan Blake are still out. Ndah is hoping to be fit in time for Saturday's FA Cup match against Leicester.

Match Reaction

Wolves lost valuable ground in the race to grab a top-six spot as they squandered a string of goalscoring chances in the 1-1 draw against hard-working Wimbledon at Molineux.
But disappointed manager Dave Jones felt it would have been a different story if referee Steve Tomlin had not disallowed what he felt was a good goal from Paul Butler.
Defender Butler found the net in the 80th minute with a powerful close-range header only for the official to decide he had fouled Dons keeper Kelvin Davis.
"I saw nothing wrong with the goal," maintained Jones. "That was the little bit of luck we needed. But the referee saw something no-one else in the ground has seen."
He added: "I thought Butler took the goal well. He told me the referee said he jumped into the keeper.
"But the keeper was too late and it was certainly a goal that should have been allowed."
In the end Jones' men had to be content with just one point to take their tally to a miserable six from their last seven league outings.
But Jones, while bitterly disappointed with the marksmanship of his forwards, had no complaints about the effort put into the one-sided game by his promotion-chasers.
"It's frustrating for everyone because I thought we played some good, high-tempo football," he added.
"We had one lapse and we paid the penalty but I thought my players ran themselves into the ground to try and get the right result.
"We certainly had enough chances to have one point. We played a lot of good balls into the box but you have got to get onto the end of them if you are to win."
Wolves took the lead in the 43rd minute when Kenny Miller notched his first goal in 10 games.
Mark Kennedy chipped a pinpoint cross into the middle for Miller to beat the helpless Davis with a marvelous looping header.
But it was 1-1 inside the first minute of the new half when Damien Francis was on target for Wimbledon for the second successive game - and the fourth time this season.
Mikele Leigertwood crossed from the right for Francis to smash a rising shot past keeper Matt Murray and into the roof of the Wolves net.
It was always Wolves who held the edge but they continually failed in front of goal with Miller, Kennedy, Colin Cameron and Shaun Newton wasting good scoring chances. *From www.sportinglife.com*

Wolves: Paul Ince looks to have shaken off his knee injury but left-back Mohamed Camara has suffered a reaction on his return to training following a knee injury sustained pre-season. Alex Rae is suffering from back spasms that could rule him out. Strikers Nathan Blake and Dean Sturridge are still sidelined, so George Ndah and Kenny Miller are set to continue in attack.

Wimbledon: David Connolly will have a late fitness test on his injured hamstring. The former Wolves striker is desperate to play but is rated doubtful by manager Stuart Murdoch, who is without Trond Andersen and Gareth Ainsworth through suspension, plus Darren Holloway (knee) and Lionel Morgan (cartilage).

Proudlock Cleared

Wolves striker Adam Proudlock has been cleared of affray at Shrewsbury Crown Court. He was cleared of the charges on Tuesday, 12 months after he was first charged following an incident outside a nitespot in his home town of Newport, but was fined £250 for the lesser offence of threatening behavior.
Proudlock said: "It's been a very difficult 12 months for me, I very much regret the incident and I'm glad I can now put it behind me and get on with my career at Wolves."

Injury Update

Midfielder Paul Ince has missed the last two days training due to a sore knee, but Wolves are hopeful that he will be fit for Saturday.
He is expected back in training later this week and should be fit for the weekend, but Alex rae has been put on alert just incase.

Full back 'Super' Mo Camara has suffered another set-back in his bid to return to full fitness.
He has been booked in to see a specialist after he pulled out of training after his right knee flared up again.
Camara had only just returned to fitness last week, in Wolves match against Burton Albion in the Birmingham Senior Cup.
Boss Dave Jones said: "He's suffered a problem with the same knee that was operated on and he's due to go and see a specialist."
He originally suffered a knee injury following a kick in the pre-season friendly at Stockport and underwent an operation to remove small flakes of bone in September and returned to training just before Christmas.

Goalkeeper Matt Murray is to play through the pain barrier after he suffered a shoulder injury several games ago, a specialist says there is no damage.

Youth Results

Wolves' Under 19s drew 1-1 at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Forest took the lead after ten minutes when the Wolves defence failed to clear a long ball. But Wolves equalised on the hour, Sammy Clingan played in Jimmi Lee Jones who scored from just outside the area.
The Wolves under 17s game against Forest, at Compton Park, was postponed because of a frozen pitch.

Transfer News

Wolves have said their defender Joleon Lescott is not for sale during January's month long transfer window. Teams like Tottenham, Newcastle, Blackburn and Manchester City have been linked with the 20-year-old, who recently made his 100th League appearance for Wolves.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: "Joleon Lescott signed a five-year contract at the beginning of this season - end of story."
"We are absolutely delighted with the way he is performing and we are looking forward to him being part of our team for many years to come."
"We want to keep all our good young players and we're very confident of doing that," he said. "That's why we sign them on long contracts - you only have to look at what we did with Joleon, and before that Adam Proudlock and Keith Andrews."
Jez admitted that there had been no bids for anyone at the club, confirming the depressed state of the transfer market.

Wolves are also still negotiating with young goalkeeper Matt Murray to extend his long term future at Molineux. The 21-year-old keeper is in the final few months of a five-year deal he signed as a teenager which was the longest awarded to a Wolves trainee.

Also in the news Wolves have dismissed reports that Paul Ince is set to retire from professional football at the end of the current season.
Ince signed at Molineux on a free transfer from Middlesbrough last June, and has been reported to be considering hanging up his boots at the end of the current campaign.

12th January 2003

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said about the goal: "It was not nice for the goalkeeper, but on that surface it was going to take something like that."
And about the rest of the match: "I felt we deserved it because if I had known what the pitch was like I would have trained on Ainsdale beach.
"But the game went ahead and what I am pleased with was the way we applied ourselves with character.
"It was not the nicest way to win a game, but I think overall we had just as many chances as we were allowed on a pitch like that."

In the 60th minute Marc Edworthy crossed and Branch floated a header beyond Robinson’s dive to make it 3-0.

Wolves have drawn Leicester City in the 4th round of the FA Cup at Molineux, the match is scheduled for Saturday 25th of January.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW about the draw: "All you can ask for is that your number comes out first.
"It's a great reward for the players and the supporters for the win over Newcastle.
"It's a derby game and I'm sure we will have another full house."

Match Reaction

Yesterday's victory provided some relief for Wolves manager Dave Jones, whose future at the club has been clouded by some scathing criticism from his chairman Sir Jack Hayward during the week.
Jones insisted he was not affected by the chairman's comments, saying: "I haven't read it, I don't intend to read it. I'm just focusing on my job, keeping my head down and doing the job to the best of my ability.
"Today I'm a good coach and manager, the next time we lose I'll be a bad coach. This is the pressure in management and some people don't believe me but I enjoy every minute of it - I just enjoy it more when we are winning."
Jones added: "It was a big disappointment for us to concede the two goals but at half-time the players still believed they could get something from the game.
"What we haven't got is the level of consistency and we have not been taking our chances. What we have done is shown what we are capable of. If we had not been at our best today they would have turned us over.
"Everybody was fully committed and it showed in the goal-line clearances we made."

Wolves: Dean Sturridge is out with an Achilles injury and Nathan Blake is still out injured, Chelsea recalled Carlton Cole on Thursday so Wolves boss Dave Jones is likely to continue with George Ndah and Kenny Miller in attack.

Newcastle: are expected to welcome England international Kieron Dyer and Peruvian ace Nolberto Solano back for Sunday's showdown after they missed the Magpies' 1-0 win over Liverpool through injury.

Chelsea Call Back Cole

Chelsea have changed their minds and are not allowing striker Carlton Cole to stay at Molineux for an extra month. They agreed last weekend to let him stay at Wolves for a second month and if they lost to Middlesborough in the FA Cup on Saturday they would allow him to play in Wolves FA Cup match against Newcastle on Sunday.
Wolves officials received a call this morning asking that Cole be sent back to London as his loan officially ended at midnight last night, Chelsea said injury worries were the reason for wanting him back.
Now Wolves have only have one fully fit striker, Kenny Miller, so they may recall strikers that are out on loan, Cedric Roussel could be recalled from Mons but Adam Proudlock needs to serve 28 days of his agreed loan at Sheffield Wednesday which means he can't be called back until 11th January.
With the transfer window open now, Wolves could bring in new strikers.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after the match: “We had enough chances to go on and win the game, while Derby only had two shots all match.
“We gave away a goal with a bad back pass, but then got ourselves back in the game. The lads really got going but they just couldn’t find that second goal.
“Our confidence has been knocked of late. Lots of things have been said but they have gone out and given their all, some coming off the treatment table to play their part.”
He added about Paul Ince's goal: "It was his first goal since arriving at Molineux back in August.
“Incey is a big time player, he made a mistake but then went on to get a goal.”

Sir Jack Warning

Dave Jones has vowed to fight on after his job appeared to be under threat following a stinging attack by chairman Sir Jack Hayward.
Wolves multi-millionaire owner fired a clear warning shot at the Molineux management in a local paper and chose the first day of the new year to remind Jones he had promised the board automatic promotion this season.
The Wolves boss Said: "That's something you will have to ask the chairman about, I'm not going to get involved in that.
"I have not read Sir Jack's comments and I won't be speaking about them until I have.
"He owns the football club and is entitled to be disappointed at the moment. But let me get on with the job."
