Team News

Portsmouth: new imposing striker Ivica Mornar, is expected to be handed his debut, the former Anderlecht man is expected to partner Teddy Sheringham in a new look Portsmouth strike-force.
Portsmouth have been struggling with injuries to forwards all season and will welcome the arrival of Mornar, with the evergreen Sheringham the only other fit striker at the club.
Deon Burton, Mark Burchill and Svetoslav Todorov are all out with long-term knocks, whilst the talented Yakubu Aiyegbeni is away on international duty.

Wolves: are relatively injury free, with boss Jones set to be missing only Nathan Blake with a re-occuring neck problem and Henri Camara, who is currently representing Senegal in the African Cup of Nations.
New signing Carl Cort is set to make his debut alongside in-form Kenny Miller.
Wolves other new signing goalkeeper Paul Jones will have to settle for a place on the bench, as Jones keeps faith with Michael Oakes, who has impressed in recent weeks.
Pacey winger Shaun Newton is to face a late fitness test for the visitors, but Wolves are not confident that the former Charlton wideman will be fit to start.

Keeper Signs Again

Today Wolves confirmed they have signed goalkeeper Paul Jones from Southampton for £250,000.
The 36-year-old Welsh international underwent a medical at Molineux on Wednesday and now Michael Oakes will have competition for the first-team keeper's shirt, with England Under-21 star Matt Murray still sidelined by a long-term foot injury.
Jones had been on loan at Liverpool, but the Anfield club today gave their consent to his permanent move to Wolves, where he has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal.
It is the third time Wolves boss Dave Jones has bought the player having also signed him for previous clubs Stockport and Southampton.

Keeper Jones played for Wolves for five years from 1991 and said: "I'm delighted to be back, you don't spend five years of your career at a club and then forget about it.
"I've got a lot of fond memories of my time here and it's nice to see a few familiar faces about the place. And, of course, I know the gaffer well from when we were together at Stockport and Southampton.''

Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "For me it was a massive mistake when Wolves let Paul go. I think that knowing this is the third time that I've signed him shows the faith that I have in him.''

Wanderers needed special dispensation to sign Jones before the end of the transfer window on Saturday because technically he was still on loan at Anfield, but Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier said: "All of us hold him in the highest regard and we wish him well in the future.
"He has done a great job for us but we could not stand in the way of this move.''

Youth & Reserve Fixture Update

The FA Youth Cup tie between Wolves and Rotherham which was postponed on Wednesday because of the atrocious weather conditions, will now take place next Monday 2nd February, at Molineux with a 7pm kick-off.

Wolves reserve fixture has changed venues, Manchester City were due to be in opposition at Telford on 3rd February, but the game will be at Hyde United, the home of Manchester’s reserves.

Club secretary Richard Skirrow explained on WOW: “Telford have rearranged their FA Cup tie against Millwall for the following night and obviously they don’t want to put the game under threat by playing on it 24 hours earlier. So we had to either switch the venue or date of the game.
“However, the FA Premier League were insistent that, if at all possible, the game must go ahead next week.
“We didn’t want to use Molineux because with the youth game taking place on Monday, playing again the following night could worsen further the playing surface ahead of our game against Arsenal the following weekend.
“So when City offered to switch the game to Hyde we accepted their offer. But we do apologise to our season ticket holders and the supporters who normally follow the reserves home games for the inconvenience caused.
“Season ticket holders will still gain free admission if they wish to make the trip.”

Rangers Not Interested

Rangers have pulled the plug on Wolves Scottish midfielder Alex Rae's dream return to Ibrox.
The 34-year-old has been in outstanding form in the Premiership for Wolves this season, and his current Molineux deal expires in the summer.
Rae is a Rangers fan and had made it clear he would have considered signing for them despite being released by the club as a teenager.
But the player's age ultimately counted against him even though Rangers have just signed a 33-year-old in Frank de Boer.
A Rangers spokesman told the Wolverhampton Express & Star: "The player is nearing the end of his contract and has been offered to us, but that is the end of the matter as far as we are concerned.''

Okoronkwo Unhappy

Nigerian defender Isaac Okoronkwo says that he is being denied a deserved first-team place because of a contract dispute at Molineux.
The African signed for Wolves from Shakhtar Donetsk, but has made just one appearance this season.
Okoronkwo only signed a one-year deal and he says that club officials say that they are unwilling to play him in case he leaves for another club at the end of the season.
Although he will play a major part in Nigeria's African Cup of Nations campaign, Okoronkwo says that he will not play for Dave Jones' side unless he gives in to Wolves' pressure and signs a new deal.

"Officials of the club are not happy with the fact that I only have a one-year deal," Okoronkwo told This Day.
"They have said that if I get a regular place in the side, which I deserve, bigger clubs would be aware of my qualities and they would just wait for the end of my one-year contract to sign me on a free transfer.
"I am in a pretty difficult situation at the moment. Not being able to play regularly has not been easy.
"I do my best in training sessions and the reserve games that I play in but it is not the same as playing league games.
"One just has to keep his head up and not feel depressed about the situation.
"But if things do not change soon, I may have to seek new opportunities elsewhere."

Wolves Hope Rae Will Sign New Deal

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey is confident 34-year-old midfielder Alex Rae will still be at the club next season. The Scot's current contract expires in the summer and Moxey admitted that other clubs could therefore engineer a move for the player behind Wolves backs. Rangers who released Rae as a teenager, Blackburn and Aston Villa are the three clubs believed to have taken an interest in the midfielder.

Jez said: "We are in talks with him about a new contract and I expect Alex Rae to be here next season."
Rae has been outstanding following Wolves return to the top flight and has netted five goals in the last nine games.
Such form has not gone un-noticed by Scotland manager Berti Vogts, who is considering calling up the veteran despite his age.
Moxey added: "I hope he does get a call-up because he deserves it."

Board Split On Cort Signing

Wolves new chairman Rick Hayward admits the signing of Carl Cort split the Wolves board. Cort made a £2m move to Molineux after an injury-plagued Newcastle career.

Hayward revealed his father, former chairman Sir Jack, questioned the deal and said: "We have been watching him for a long time and it was not a unanimous decision by the board.
"My father and various people were questioning it, but you have to do your homework beforehand. Carl has gone through rigorous testing."

The 26-year-old striker made just 23 appearances in four years at Newcastle and scored only eight goals.
Cort was labelled "The Invisible Man" by a Newcastle source after the move, a tag that left manager Sir Bobby Robson threatening to resign unless the culprit was sacked.

Hayward added: "I met him a few days ago and chatted to him and I believe he is a good signing.
"He did it for Wimbledon, but a number of things went wrong for him at Newcastle.
"Carl is still only 26, is big and we need players like that up front."

Two On Molineux Trial

Wolves are giving short term trials to Swedish goalkeeper Johan Wiland and French defender Kodjo Afanou.
Keeper Johan Wiland who is a former Swedish under 21, trained with coach Bobby Mimms at Compton Park on Tuesday morning. The 24-year-old has spent all of his senior playing career with Elfsborg in the Swedish League.
Central defender Kodjo Afanou who is 25, was with Bordeaux for eight seasons before switching to Al Ain of Saudi Arabia last summer.

The boss Dave Jones said: “Once again I have to stress that we are having players in on trial throughout the season and Johan and Kodjo are just two of that number.”

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones believes defeat was the price Wolves were forced to pay following Premiership exertions against big guns Manchester United and Liverpool.
Their Cup clash with the Hammers was Wolves' third outing in eight days and came on the back of a 1-0 home victory over Manchester United and the 1-1 midweek draw with Liverpool.

Jones took the opportunity to leave out Alex Rae and Denis Irwin, who he later revealed had both complained of hip problems on Saturday, as well as leave out the leg-weary Jody Craddock and Steffen Iversen while Shaun Newton was sidelined by ankle and hamstring injuries.
And Jones confirmed more changes would have been made had he been able to call on a bigger squad.

He said: "If I'd had more players around me I'd perhaps have made more changes than I did.
"This was always going to be a difficult tie whether we'd had those games against Manchester United and Liverpool or not had them but we were still very dull and lethargic and you could see our brightest players were those who were the freshest.
"I took the opportunity to rest a few but I still felt I'd picked a team to get a result because we wanted to go through but I felt it was one game too many for some of our players and it was a game played on a heavy pitch too.
"To lose any game is bad but I was annoyed with the way we conceded the goals and the lads are disappointed not to have gone through."

Cort Signs

Striker Carl Cort completed his transfer to Molineux today after undergoing a rigorous medical, he was introduced to the fans before the kick-off.
He has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal, but the clubs, however, appear to disagree on the fee with Wolves claiming they have paid £2million for the player while Newcastle saying they have sold Cort for £1.6million.

The 26-year-old has been plagued with injuries since his £7million move from Wimbledon to St James' Park in 2000 and, as a result, never had chance to establish himself in the first team. He made just 25 appearances and scored eight goals.

However, Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson is confident Cort will be able to resurrect his career in the Black Country.
Robson said: "He will prove to be a Premiership player and he might kick us in the teeth one day - and I hope he does."

Rae Wants New Contract

Wolves midfielder Alex Rae is hoping to sign a new contract at Molineux and finish his career at the Midlands club.
Wolves paid out £1.2million on Rae in 2001 and his current contract runs out at the end of the season, and the 34-year-old is enjoying some of the most impressive form of his professional career, but he has never earned a full Scotland.

But Rae believes rubbing shoulders with veteran campaigners and teammates Denis Irwin (38) and Paul Ince (36) has provided the inspiration to extend his playing career as long as possible.
He said: "I'm fighting for my future here at Wolves at the moment because my contract's finished in the summer.
"But without a doubt I could see myself ending my career here if I could get another contract. Why not?
"If things are right for me then I'll play for just as long as I can because I love playing and it's something I want to continue doing as long as I possibly can.
"You look at people like Paul Ince and Denis Irwin alongside you and they are an inspiration so I'll do whatever it takes to keep going."

Rae is currently Wolves top  goalscorer with eight goals in all competitions this season.
"I've got a few goals so far this season and that's been pleasing, a real plus point because I'd never been able to score regular goals in the Premiership before.
"The goal at Aggborough was important because I would not like to have lost to Kidderminster and been part of a side who had been beaten by underdogs.
"That's never happened to me and I didn't want it to.
"I've had it the other way around in my career - when I've won as an underdog - but I wouldn't have wanted the boot to have been on the other foot.
"I certainly wouldn't want to be sitting in my armchair in 20 years' time watching re-runs of Kidderminster turning us over so thank God it never happened."

Rae's attitude exemplifies the spirit in the Molineux camp at the moment, with Premiership strugglers Wolves picking up four points from home games with Manchester United and Liverpool this week.
"I'm enjoying my football at the moment and although we're all talking about the Cup tie this week, every game's an occasion in the Premiership.
"The players you find yourself up against in the Premiership are technically very good and they're hungry for success - that's why they're playing for top clubs - so if you don't match them for desire and hunger then you're going to get turned over most weeks."

Team News

Wolves: Midfielder general Paul Ince is expected to report fit for duty despite being troubled by an abscess under a toenail although wideman Shaun Newton is expected to continue his spell on the sidelines while recovering from hamstring and ankle injuries.
Frontman Nathan Blake is another ruled out of the equation with the Welsh international currently suffering from a neck injury.

West Ham: have been one of the most active teams in the transfer market this January, but their recent captures Andy Melville, Nigel Reo-Coker and Adam Nowland are cup tied and will not figure.
Stephen Bywater will keep his place in goal, while Fulham have allowed full back Jon Harley to take his place at Molineux.
The Hammers will have to make do without the suspended Jermain Defoe, while Neil Mellor is struggling, which will see David Connolly lead the line.

Transfer News

From skysports.com: Preston North End have confirmed they rejected a bid from a Premiership club earlier this month for Ricardo Fuller and skysports.com can confirm that Wolves were the interested party.
The Lancashire outfit have revealed that they did shun an offer for their prized asset, as it was below their valuation of the player.
A statement from the club read: "Preston North End's board of directors would normally not comment on speculation, however, following reports in the media we can confirm that the club received an offer from a Premiership club over a week ago which was considerably below our valuation of Ricardo Fuller.
"This was immediately rejected."

Midlands sources have confirmed to skysports.com that Wolves, who have now turned to Newcastle's Carl Cort - were the club involved and they lodged a bid of around £2 million.
Preston are believed to rate Fuller at over £4 million and that is a sizeable return for a player they paid Hearts just £250,000 for.
If Preston do not relent in their demands then it seems unlikely a Premiership club will make a move for Fuller - who is desperate to show of his skills at the highest level.

Fuller's agent Phil Graham would not be drawn on the news about the rejected offer for his client, although he did confirm that North End's offer of a new contract had been shunned.
"Ricardo wants to play in The Premiership, and he is determined to do it," he said.
"I can confirm that an offer of a two-year extension on his current 18-month deal was rejected."

Wolves are also being linked with Bordeaux defender Mathieu Beda.
The young defender is highly regarded by Les Girondins, and coach Michael Pavon has been relying on him at the back recently.
David Jones's side have been alerted to the fact that the 22-year-old is out of contract in June, and Bordeaux have no option but to allow the player to speak with any interested parties.
Although there is no suggestion that talks have already commenced, it is understood that Wolves will monitor the Nice-born stopper's situation carefully.
Much could depend on whether Wolves win their battle to remain in The Premiership, but the former Cannes and Nancy centre back is likely to remain on Jones's list of potential targets for 2004-2005.

Ince Banned

Paul Ince picked up his tenth booking of the season in last night's draw with Liverpool. He will now be banned for the matches with Arsenal at Molineux on the 7th February and away at Leeds on the 10th February.

Match Reaction

Dave Jones paid tribute to the spirit in the camp that helped Wolves to an injury time equaliser. He said: “What we have in the dressing room – the camaraderie – is very special. You just can’t buy that.
“We respected Liverpool because they are a top, top side. But weren’t frightened of them.
“We gave them the first goal. We made a bad mistake and were caught ball watching. But in the second half we played some good football. We were camped out in their half.
"They had opportunities to finish us off but they didn’t take them. We kept Heskey, Owen and Kewell – who are top players – quiet.
“The fans kept pushing us. The place was rockin’.”
“Steffen ran his socks off tonight. Kenny’s goal was a great strike. He’s got to keep doing that now.

The boss added about Carl Cort's transfer: "I know the club has put out a statement but until a player is signed and sealed I won't comment."

Transfer Update

Wolves are reported to be heavily involved in talks with two clubs to sign the two men boss Dave Jones wants to strengthen their chances of staying in the Premiership.
He Said: "We are slowly getting closer to an agreement but they want us to pay more than we want for the players."

Jones is hot on the trail of Millwall keeper Tony Warner and sources inside Molineux say Wolves have already had three bids rejected for the 29-year-old.
But Wolves are expected to make another move for the 6ft 4ins Warner and he could be on the books by the end of the week to provide experienced back-up for Michael Oakes.

Jones has also opened talks with Aston Villa midfielder Hassan Kachloul in a bid to sign the former Moroccan international on a free transfer.
Kachloul, 31, has just returned to Villa Park after completing a four month loan spell with Wolves but manager Jones wants to bring him back on a permanent basis.
Jones, who first signed Kachloul when he was in charge at Southampton, said: "I have spoken to Hassan and his agent and now I have got to talks things over with my chairman."
For the deal to go through, Kachloul must agree a pay-off with Villa on the final six months of his contract and accept a pay-cut at Molineux.
Jones has given no details of the kind of deal he would be prepared to offer to Kachloul, but is likely to be a short-term contract for the remainder of the season.
Kachloul knows that he has no future at Villa Park in the plans of David O'Leary and did enjoy his time with Wolves and has never hidden from the fact that he would like to stay at the club.
O'Leary has never given him a senior outing and what has proved to be his last appearance for Villa came as a substitute against FC Zurich in the Intertoto Cup way back in the summer of 2002.

West Ham boss Alan Pardew has categorically ruled out selling striker David Connolly to Wolves.
He said on the club's official website: "I guarantee that he won't be going to Wolves and that he will be a West Ham player until the end of this campaign.

Wolves, Charlton and Bolton are all said to have made enquiries for Le Mans striker Daniel Cousin.
Cousin inspired Le Mans to promotion last term and has adapted to the top flight, notching eight goals to try and keep the club in Le Championnat, although they currently occupy the last relegation place.
One of the Premiership troika have reportedly faxed a €2.5 million offer to the club, although Le Mans are not thought to be welcoming any bids. The powerful 27-year-old has a contract at Leon-Bollee until June 2005.

Wolves have announced they are in discussion with Newcastle United over the possible transfer of Carl Cort. The 26 year old striker is at Molineux this evening to watch the Liverpool game. They will release more details tomorrow.

Wolves are also chasing an attacking-midfielder but Jones is giving away no clues at all about the names of the men on his wanted list.
Rick Hayward, the new Wolves chairman, after trimming three members of the Molineux board, has promised Jones his full support in the hunt for new players.

20th January 2004

Team News

Wolves: boss Dave Jones is likely to keep the same squad that beat Man Utd and will be looking for Kenny Miller to go on a goalscoring run after Saturday's strike.
Hassan Kachloul has returned to Aston Villa after his loan deal expired and his place on the bench will go to Joey Gudjonsson.
Nathan Blake is not expected to be fit as he struggles with a neck injury but apart from long-term casualties Matt Murray, Joleon Lescott and George Ndah, Jones has close to a full squad.

Liverpool: skipper Steven Gerard returns to the Liverpool line-up after recovering from a thigh strain and he will link-up with Michael Owen for the first time since November.
Gerrard and Owen have played just 12 games together this season and Houllier will be delighted to have them both back in action after injury - with Owen looking to regain his match sharpness in his third match back after a long lay-off.
Bruno Cheyrou will step aside for Gerrard's return while Jerzy Dudek will probably remain on the bench after recovering from a knee injury enabling Paul Jones to play against one of his former clubs.
Steve Finnan returned against Spurs and he and Jamie Carragher will travel with the squad to Molineux, although Chris Kirkland, Milan Baros, Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Vladimir Smicer are all injured, while El-Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao are on international duty.

Chairman Announces Board Changes

From www.wolves.co.uk:

Wolves’ new chairman, Rick Hayward, today announced changes to the club’s board of directors.
At Mr Hayward’s request, directors John Harris, Rachael Heyhoe Flint and Michael Lister have agreed to retire from their positions on the board.
Explaining the reasoning for the changes, the chairman stated that he was still hopeful of attracting new investors to the club.
He said: “The smaller board will allow for new appointments, hopefully to reflect new investment, without the overall size becoming unwieldy.”
Paying tribute to the three departing directors, Mr Hayward added: “I would like to place on record my appreciation to John, Rachael and Michael for their commitment and enthusiasm during their time on the board.
They have been great supporters of the club and will, I am sure, continue to be so.”

John Harris was appointed a director in 1990 and served alongside his father, Jack, who himself retired at the end of last month after accepting the position of vice-president of the club. Rachael, former captain of England’s women’s cricket team and a long time friend of club president, Sir Jack Hayward, joined the board in 1997. She has also been Wolves’ community public relations consultant since 1990 – a role she will continue to carry out. Michael Lister, a chartered accountant and former auditor of the club, joined the parent company’s board, WW (1990) Limited, in 1998 and the football club board in 2000. He is retiring both seats.

Former England women’s cricket captain Rachael Heyhoe Flint retired from the Wolves board today after serving six years as a director. Rachael, who will continue to work for the club as a community public relations consultant - a job she has done since 1990 - said: "I feel a little sad but life at Wolves is ever changing.
"It has been a privilege and a pleasure to have served Sir Jack and the board and I’m glad to say that the new chairman (Rick Hayward) has asked me to continue with my public relations work for the club.
"As a ‘local yokel’, and fan since 1950, I get great pleasure out of providing a very important link between the club and the players with the fans, youngsters, and those who are disadvantaged or who have special needs.
"I have loved being at the heart of Wolves and I hope I can contribute positively in the future."

Rae Could Get Call-Up

Scotland assistant manager Tommy Burns has said Wolves midfielder Alex Rae might get a international call-up for Scotland. The 33-year-old has played for the Under-21s but has never been capped at senior level.
Rae's fine form in the Premiership this season has not gone unnoticed by the Scotland management and Burns insists Rae could have a role to play for his country in the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers which begin in September.

He said: "If Berti Vogts feels he needs a player of Alex's type then a call-up could be a possibility.
"I certainly don't think the door has been closed on him because he's been absolutely sensational this season.
"He's always been a first-class player and he's come through difficult times and to his credit he's actually starring in the English Premiership at 33.
"In one-off games where we feel we could use his type of experience.''

Reserves Beaten

Wolves reserves lost 2-1 to Liverpool's reserves at Chester’s Deva Stadium last night.
In the 13th minute Wolves took the lead, Gary Mulligan’s through ball released Leon Clarke who outpaced two defenders before slotting home a low angled shot from just inside the area.
Liverpool drew level in the 38th minute after a Le Tallec shot had been deflected behind for a corner. Foley played a short kick to Potter who crossed for Whitbread to head home from eight-yards out.
Le Tallec made it two in two minutes for Liverpool when he prodded the ball home from close range following another cross from Potter.
Walters was sent-off in the 81st minute, the referee deciding the midfielder’s challenge on Welsh warranted a second yellow card, his first yellow card came in the 19 minute for a foul.

Liverpool: Harrison, Otsemobor, Raven, Medjani, Whitbread, Potter, Foy, Welsh, Gillespie, Le Tallec (Smyth 62), Foley.
Unused Subs: Willis, Vaughan, Wright, Wilkie.
Wolves: Ikeme, Flynn, Talbott, Townsend, Lowe, Walters, Jones, Watson, Clarke, Mulligan, Steele (Davies 45).
Unused Subs: Hennessey, Goodhead, Barnes-Homer, Bradley.
Yellow Cards: Walters, Clarke.
Red Card: Walters.

Kachloul Returns To Villa

Midfielder Hassan Kachloul has returned to Aston Villa after completing his loan spell at Molineux, injury and illness restricted his appearances for the first team to just four from the substitutes bench.
With the rules stating that only two players at any one time can come in on loan, and only four over the course of a season, it was felt that because of Hassan’s injury situation it was in the best interests of the club that he returned Villa.
The Moroccan is out of contract at the end of the season and if he can negotiate a termination of his agreement with Villa before then, he could return to Molineux on a more permanent basis.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said: “I’d like to thank Hassan for all he has done in his time with us. It’s just unfortunate that he didn’t play as much as we would have liked through injury.
“If he can sort himself out at Aston Villa, then we would be prepared to talk to him.”

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "Psychologically and confidence wise this result is a massive boost for everybody associated with the club.
"I've said many times that if you believe in something enough you've got a far better chance of achieving it.
"Kenny took his goal well and that is what we have not been doing this season.
"We know that Manchester United will bounce back from this result. What we have got to make sure now is that we push on from it."

Striker Kenny Miller said: "We put in a great shift. It was hard work by the whole team. We deserved it.
"We were under pressure but the lads defended well. It was a hard, hard game against an unbelievable team. But we set our stall out and it paid off.
"It was a great time to get off the mark in the Premiership but it was a team effort. I was there to put the ball in."

Man of the match, midfielder Alex Rae said: "All the games at this level are cup games for us and we're fighting for our lives.
"You can't let United settle. We rode our luck and when they came strong towards the end we battled and defended well.
"We had to keep it tight early and not lose a goal."

Ince Hints At Playing On

Wolves midfielder Paul Ince has hinted that he will look to continue his career after this season, but he doesn't want to drop down a level to extend his playing time.
Ince believes he can still do a job in the top-flight, and will not be following team-mate Denis Irwin in announcing his retirement.

Ince said: "In our last Premiership game at Charlton, Scotty Parker was going through to score in the final minute and I still made last-ditch tackle on him.
"That tells me I can still keep going for 90 minutes. Denis has decided it's time to call it a day. But he's two years older than me!
"I'll just leave everything to the end of the season and then sit down with my wife my family and the gaffer to see where we go from there.
"But, as I've said before, if I did give it another season it would have to be in The Premiership - the thought of 50 league games back in he Nationwide League would do my head in!"

Team News

Wolves: Former Man Utd players Denis Irwin and Paul Ince lie in wait for Ferguson after they were rested from the midweek FA Cup meeting with Kidderminster Harriers.
Alex Rae and Colin Cameron were also rested for the replay, with that quartet expected to be back in the team.

Henri Camara is absent as he is on African Cup of Nations duty with Senegal while Nathan Blake is out with a neck and shoulder problem.
Vio Ganea made his first start for Wolves in midweek and hopes to retain his place while Lee Naylor is expected to shake off a calf strain to figure.

Man Utd: The visitors main injury concern is Ryan Giggs after the Welshman limped out of the stalemate against Newcastle at half time with a back problem and he is unlikely to be risked.
Darren Fletcher is available after suspension and Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the squad after a mid-season break but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not yet ready to return from a knee injury.

Transfer News

Boss Dave Jones has assured Wolves supporters he is hot on the trail of new signings to help strengthen their chances of Premiership survival.
Wolves have already been linked with a string of players including Blackburn's Dwight Yorke, Sunderland defender Michael Gray and Millwall keeper Tony Warner.

"We are certainly hoping to get in a few players before the deadline passes," confirmed Jones. "We are continuing to work really hard to make something happen."
Jones has so far only added Ioan striker Ganea to his squad during the transfer window and Warner could be the next player arriving at Molineux for £300,000, to solve Wolves long goalkeeping crisis.

But the manager admits he has already lost out on a string of players including Modeste N'Bami, a man who was on his wanted list for a long time.
"It is getting harder and harder to get the players you want," added Jones. "I have missed out on two men recently at the 11th hour. But that happens all the time in football."

Now Millwall have attempted to head off interest in goalkeeper Tony Warner from Wolves, Southampton and West Ham by offering him a new contract.
Warner is out of contract at the end of the season but has been offered improved terms on a new two-and-a-half year deal.
The former Liverpool keeper is a prize asset at The New Den and player-manager Dennis Wise hopes to convince him to stay.

He said: "The club have made Tony a new offer. Whether he wishes to take it up or wait until the end of the season is entirely up to him. I don't know what he intends to do, but the offer is there and if he wishes to sign it will be great for the club.
"Whatever he decides, the most important thing for Tony is that he continues to play as well as he has been for Millwall," he told the club's website.

Reserves Lose

Wolves reserves lost 2-0 against Leeds Utd at Telford.
In first-half stoppage time Wolves were denied what looked like a clear penalty when Camara clattered into Mulligan. The referee waved play on, and Leeds went straight to the other end and Paul Keegan scored.
Leeds second came three minutes from the end when Bridges headed in a probing cross from substitute Sean McDaid.

Wolves Reserves: Ikeme, Flynn, Talbott, Townsend, Lowe, Walters, Vincent (Barnes-Homer 73), Watson, Mulligan, Jones, Steele.
Unused Subs: Tilt, Davies, Bradley.
Leeds Reserves: Carson (Coyles 45), Edwards, Domi (McDaid 45), Keegan, Junior, Camara, Winter, Bridges, Johnson, McPhail, Kinkladze.
Unused Subs: Woods, Armstrong, McStay.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "It was a professional job done, we could have done without this game but we didn't do the business in the first game.
"It was a nice pay day for them with good support from their supporters and fantastic from ours. We know where our priorities lie. Now we can worry about the next team in red here."

Jones admitted it was "not the prettiest game" but was pleased he could make seven changes to spare his first-team regulars.
"I rested quite a lot of the lads of who have been playing and others go 90 minutes, which maybe they wouldn't have done otherwise," he added.
Striker Kenny Miller scored both goals but Kidderminster claimed his second did not cross the line. Jones did not give his opinion but said: "There's no doubt there will be a lot of dispute. Was it or wasn't it? But we could settle down and take our foot off the gas."

Team News

Wolves: loan striker Ioan Ganea could make his first start in their FA Cup replay against Kidderminster. Central defender Paul Butler is again available for selection after being suspended for one match.

Kidderminster: are boosted by Danny Williams' return to fitness, he's recovered from knee ligament trouble, although fellow midfielder Lee Jenkins remains sidelined by a knee problem ahead of the FA Cup replay with Wolves.
Defender Kenny Coleman continues to struggle with groin and stomach injuries, while Adam Willis and Adam Murray are cup-tied after respective outings for Burton Albion and Notts County in previous rounds.

Goalkeeper Update

Wolves are lining up a swoop for Millwall goalkeeper Tony Warner to solve their goalkeeping problems.
They only have one senior keeper Michael Oakes available as a result of Matt Murray's long-term injury problems.
Molineux boss Dave Jones has listed a new keeper as one of his main priorities during the January transfer window.

After failing to sign both Le Havre goalkeeper Carlos Kameni and Ipswich Town's Andy Marshall, Jones has now set his sights on Millwall's Warner.
The former Liverpool shot-stopper has been in great form for The Lions over the past couple of years, and was voted the club's Player of the Year last year.
Millwall would want around £1 million for Warner but Jones may have no option if he wants a proven keeper to boost his squad ahead of their relegation fight.

Last Season For Irwin

Wolves veteran Irish full back Denis Irwin has admitted this will be his final season no matter whether Wolves survive in the Premiership or not.
He was set to retire last summer but opted to play on for another season at the request of Wolves boss Dave Jones after they were promoted to the Premiership.
Despite performing regularly for Wolves, the 38-year-old feels time is catching up with him.

He said: "My body tells me it is time to go, and this time I'm listening.
"I've enjoyed my time with Wolves and with a bit of luck, we'll avoid the drop.
"But even if we do, I won't be around for another season."
Irwin, though, is keen to stay involved in football, as he added: "I intend to try for a coaching badge."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after the match: "I cannot fault their effort and determination and the fans can see that. They are having a go and as long as they maintain that we have got a chance.
"You need to show great character to keep going and that's what I expect from them. I'll keep going and so will the people working with me, and I've not seen anything from anyone at this club to make me change my mind.
"We were camped in their half in the second half but we have got to put the ball in the back of the net.
"When you are at the bottom, you don't get the credit for some of the football you play, but I'd rather we were crap and were putting the ball in the back of the net."

Alan Curbishley and Dave Jones agreed to disagree on the issue of whether or not Jason Euell scored a legitimate first goal.
It was a hairline decision as Euell raced on to Paolo Di Canio's pass and slotted the ball past Michael Oakes.

Charlton boss Curbishley felt Denis Irwin had played him on side, while Wolves counterpart Jones naturally disagreed.
"We think Denis Irwin played him on," said Curbishley of the 38th-minute opener. "When you play the offside trap you win some and you lose some."
Jones said: "We felt the lad was off. The linesman had missed one just before that and the flag seemed to be too heavy for him.
"He told me after that Denis was playing him on but I had a good view and I was sure he wasn't. If the linesman says anything else then that's some call and it changed the game because it was pretty even up to then.
"It can be a cruel game and that is not the first time it has happened to us."

Team News

Charlton: boss Alan Curbishley must ponder his midfield options after dropping Graham Stuart and Claus Jensen to the bench for the midweek draw at Manchester City.
The duo paid the price for the FA Cup exit at Gillingham and may have to watch on again on Saturday with Jason Euell hoping to keep his place in midfield.
Carlton Cole is pressing for a recall to the attack while Luke Young may be included in the squad after recovering from an ankle injury.

Wolves: are definitely without Paul Butler, who is suspended, meaning young defender Mark Clyde may step in.
Paul Ince is doubtful with a virus while Steffen Iversen has been ruled out with a thigh injury. George Ndah, Matt Murray and Joleon Lescott are long-term absentees.

Boss Dave Jones will climb off his sick bed to try and inspire his relegation-threatened side to their first away win of the season. Jones is still struggling with the virus that forced him to miss the 2-2 draw against Blackburn on Wednesday. But he will travel separately to The Valley to take charge of his 150th game for the club.

8th January 2004

Match Reaction

Wolves coach Stuart Gray admitted he had had a tough time replacing bed-ridden boss Dave Jones.
Jones was ordered to stay away by his doctor at 5pm today after falling victim to the chest infection which swept through his squad this week.
Gray only started his coaching role at Molineux on Monday and admitted: "There are lots of nationalities and I don't even know all the players' names.
"But most of the preparation for the game had been done yesterday before Dave was taken ill."

And Gray admitted he was largely pleased by what he saw as his side hit back from the early setback of Andy Cole's goal.
Gray added: "There's a bit of coughing and spluttering in there but the lads showed plenty of character.
"We had our chances but we didn't work Brad Friedel enough. But there was plenty of application particularly on the back of our performance against Kidderminster.
"The bonus is our work-rate and that has moved us a little bit closer to teams like Portsmouth. We've kept the clock ticking over with a point."

Wolves boss Dave Jones watched a video of the match on Wednesday night after he was confined to bed with the chest infection virus that ruled Paul Butler out of Saturday’s match at Kidderminster, and Paul Ince out of the Blackburn match.
The boss said on WOW: “I felt, and still feel, awful. I fully intended to come to the game but the doctor banned me.
“He said that the virus was at its most infectious stage and he wouldn’t let me go into the ground.
“I had the video dropped off and watched it late last night. I thought the lads battled well after conceding that early goal but we can’t keep making the same mistakes.
“We came from behind and got our noses in front only to let another goal in from a set play. It was a shame because if we’d hung on for the win we would have been off the bottom.
“I’m hoping to go to Charlton on Saturday – even if I have to travel separately by car. But, as I’ve said, I still feel really rough so we’ll have to wait and see. The important thing is that the bug doesn’t affect any more of the squad.”

Transfer Update

Wolves midfielder Kevin Cooper has now officially joined Sunderland on a three month loan, the paper work was completed yesterday.
Cooper has made just one substitute appearance for Wolves this season and will now stay on loan up to and including April 4th. But Wolves have a recall clause which will come into affect after 28 days.

Guatemalan international striker Carlos Ruiz has left Molineux after a week long trial. The 24-year-old trained with the squad at Compton last week but he left the club on Monday after boss Dave Jones didn’t think he could add anything extra to the squad.
The Wolves boss wished him the best of luck in his quest to find a club.

Youth Cup

Wolves youngsters are through to the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Senior Cup after beating Bromsgrove Rovers 5-0.
Wolves took the lead halfway through the first half following a blunder from Wyatt, he miskicked a routine clearance into the path of Clarke who lobbed the ball over the keeper’s head and into the empty net.
Wolves got their second in the 36th minute, Watson ran onto a squared pass from Jones to hammer home a shot that Wyatt got a hand to but couldn’t keep out.
Jones made it three in the 56th minute when he beat Wyatt at the near post with a low shot after the defence had failed to clear their lines.
Substitute Gary Mulligan made it four after the Rovers defenders had made a hash of clearing a 72nd minute corner from O’Connor. And Mulligan struck again to complete the scoring nine minutes from time after he and Steve Hillman chased a long through ball from O’Connor. Wyatt ran from his area and when the two Bromsgrove players appeared to leave the ball to one another, Mulligan pounced.

Bromsgrove: Wyatt, Benbow (Jackson 72), Hillman, Pope, Benton, Beckett, Dawson (Banner 80), Allen, Sutton, Swan, Atkinson.
Unused subs: Gandy, Tomkins, Frost.
Wolves: Hennessy, Flynn, Talbott, Lowe, Townsend, Walters (Barnes Homer 84), Vincent (Mulligan 60), O’Connor, Clarke, Jones, Watson (Steele 77).
Unused subs: Tilt, Goodhead.

6th January 2004

Team News

Wolves: Henri Camara is set for a recall after missing the draw at Kidderminster with strained foot ligaments.
Nathan Blake is still out with a calf injury. But Paul Ince, who was rested for the cup tie, and virus victim Paul Butler are both in line to return.
Academy youngster Carl Ikeme is once again expected to sit on the bench, Jones having failed to land a reserve goalkeeper following Andy Marshall's return to Ipswich.

Blackburn: are without Alan Mahon and Steven Reid for the trip to Molineux, but Brett Emerton is set to return to the side.
With Peter Enckleman's switch to the Ewood Park not completed in time for the club, American David Yelldell remains as cover for Brad Friedel.

Boss Blasts Transfer Window

Wolves boss Dave Jones has blasted the transfer window rule as he frantically seeks the reinforcements needed to keep Wolves in the Premiership.
Romanian striker Vio Ganea is the only signing Jones has made so far in a New Year window which he says can only benefit the biggest clubs.
Jones said: "I don't agree with the window because it doesn't benefit the majority of clubs.
"We arrived in this division late then had to do all our business in three months.
"I can't see who it can benefit except the big clubs who have top players and can wait to pick off the cream in January.'
"We have got six games in 18 days coming up and that is a lot.
"I don't like bringing in players who are only as good as what we have got but we might just have to add a fresh face.''

Wolves Request To Senegal FA

Wolves have written to the Senegalese FA to request that striker Henri Camara can remain at Molineux until after the FA Cup replay against Kidderminster, which is a week today.
Camara was due to join up with his international team mates after the Charlton game on Saturday to prepare for the African Nations Cup.

Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: “It’s going to be a big loss when Henri goes on international duty so we have asked whether we can keep him for a couple more days.
“We have written to the Senegal authorities and will have to wait and see what they say.
“Henri is an important player for us but I have to look at it that we could lose him at any time through injury and you just have to get on with it. So it’s the same here, we’ll just have to carry on without him if we are told he has to go on Saturday evening.”

Wolves defender Isaac Okoronkwo is also due to join up with Nigeria as they prepare for the same competition.
“It will be good that he gets some football but I’m not sure whether that will get him up to Premiership pace,” added Dave Jones.
“He hasn’t adapted as quickly as we had hoped. He has struggled to get to grips with the pace of the game.”

5th January 2004

Keeper Crisis Update

Wolves fear goalkeeper Matt Murray could be missing for the rest of this season, he has been under treatment with back, knee and shoulder injuries and now has a broken bone in his foot that is taking longer than expected to heal.
Boss Dave Jones says Murray will definitely be out of action for the foreseeable future because the bones in his foot have not knitted together properly.
He should be back in March but taking into account his lack of football he has just April to get fit and regain his sharpness.

Murray has played just one Premiership game for Wolves on the opening day of the season at Blackburn Rovers and also started in the Carling Cup victory over Darlington at the end of September.

Youth keeper Carl Ikemi had to be used as back-up to Michael Oakes for the weekend FA Cup draw at Kidderminster.

Now Wolves boss Dave Jones goalkeeping problems have got worse after his attempts to sign young Cameroon star Carlos Kameni since the summer have finally failed.
Kameni was at Molineux at the start of the season but he had to go back to French club Le Harve after failing to secure a work permit.
The keeper has still not played the number of games he needs for his country to satisfy the authorities or gain French citizenship.
That means Jones has no chance of bringing the player back to Molineux as he searches for back-up to Michael Oakes who is the only experienced keeper currently fit and available for selection at the club.

FA Cup 4th Round Draw

If Wolves beat Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup third round replay, they will play 1st division West Ham at Molineux.
West Ham knocked out Wigan at the JJB Stadium on Saturday the score was 2-1.

4th January 2004

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones slammed his players and accused them of taking their opponents lightly.
And Jones admitted his side would not have deserved the victory which almost came when Romanian Vio Ganea had a shot blocked in injury time.

Jones said: "We were very poor - the stupid thing is we could have won at the death and that would have been very unjust on Kidderminster.
"We never got going and the players have to ask themselves did they just think they needed to turn up, because that's what it looks like.
"We got one side of our face slapped and we must make sure it doesn't happen again in the replay."

Despite resting Paul Ince and insisting the Premiership is his priority, Jones dismissed suggestions that he too was guilty of taking Kidderminster lightly.
Jones added: "Although we know what our priority is you have always got to look to the next game.
"We have got a job to do and we didn't do our job.
"We've got no excuses at all and Kidderminster thoroughly deserved their draw."

Gray To Return To Molineux

Ex-Southampton boss Stuart Gray is joining the Wolves coaching staff on Monday, but has not formally signed any deal at Molineux. Gray has briefly coached at Molineux before under Graham Taylor and has also coached at Aston Villa, and spent six weeks assisting Crystal Palace’s caretaker player-manager Kit Symons until they appointmented of Iain Dowie as manager.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said on WOW: “No contract has been confirmed with Stuart. He will be joining us on Monday and the situation will be under constant review.”
Boss Dave Jones added: “Stuart was a coach at Southampton when I was manager there so I have worked with him before. He knows how I work and what I expect.
"He’s coming in to assist Terry (Connor), Bobby (Mimms) and Keith (Downing). It will add a different voice to the backroom staff and give us the chance to work on more individual things.”

Lee Jenkins is out for around six weeks with a knee injury but Adie Smith is available, and Andy White's loan from Mansfield Town was extended.

Wolves: boss Dave Jones is prepared to throw Ioan Ganea into the FA Cup tie, after adding the Romanian international to his squad.

A virus has affected both Paul Butler and Mark Kennedy.

Fixture Update

Wolves home match against Liverpool, which was postponed on December 20th 2003 due to a water logged pitch, has been re-scheduled for Wednesday 21st January with a 7.45pm kick-off.
All tickets purchased for the original game are valid. Anyone requiring a refund should contact the Wolves ticket office on 0870 4420123.

Transfer News

Wolves boss Dave Jones is remaining tight lipped over speculation linking him with a move for Blackburn striker Dwight Yorke. Reports on Friday suggested that Wolves were weighing up a loan deal for the striker, who has had an indifferent season at Ewood Park as he has been unable to hold down a regular place in the side.

Jones is looking for a goalscorer in the transfer window to bolster his attack despite signing Romanian Ioan Ganea, but he refused to be drawn on the Yorke speculation.
Dave Jones said on WOW: "Until a player is sitting here beside me with a deal done and dusted, I will not confirm or deny any interest in him.
"You can keep asking the questions but I will not comment until I have a player signed and sealed."

Blackburn manager Graeme Souness played down the reports regarding Yorke insisting he knew nothing about it.
"I know absolutely nothing about it," said Souness. "The first I heard of it was when someone asked me about it, but I know nothing."

Wolves are also being linked with a move for Sunderland defender Michael Gray. He has just returned to Sunderland after a loan spell at Celtic and The Black Cats are willing to let the player leave The Stadium of Light.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

More Players To Come

Wolves boss Dave Jones has confirmed he is firmly in the hunt for many more new players.
Jones has already added Romania international Ioan Ganea to his squad, with Guatemalan star Carlos Ruiz also on board for three months.
But he says Wolves need a few more fresh faces if they are to have a chance of staying in top-flight football.
Jones has confirmed an interest in Lens striker Dagui Bakari while Cameroon's young keeper Carlos Kameni is also on his wanted list along with a strong defender.
"There are lots of other players we might be bringing in to Molineux," stressed Jones. "We have been looking closely at a number of players and now we are hoping for developments."
The manager has been promised the full support in his team-strengthening programme by new Wolves chairman Rick Hayward after they got together for a pre-Christmas meeting.
And now Jones is looking to be busy in the coming days with more men coming into Molineux and moving out.

Keeper Crisis

Wolves are facing a goalkeeping crisis ahead of their FA Cup match against Kidderminster Harriers after Andy Marshall snubbed the chance to remain at Molineux until the end of the season.
Michael Oakes is Wolves only recognised keeper with Matt Murray still out injured with a stress fracture of the foot which will mean Carl Ikeme will be promoted to the substitutes bench for Saturday's game.

Marshall has decided to return to Ipswich from his two-month stay at Molineux and is now seeking a permanent transfer away from Portman Road.
Boss Joe Royle granted the keeper a free transfer in the summer but he has yet to find new employers. Royle confirmed Marshall had turned down the chance to stay at Molineux and would be returning to Suffolk.
"Wolves have discussed keeping Andy until the end of the season, but he wants to be available if another club comes in," said Royle. "I can understand that, and Andy will start training with us again."

The former Norwich keeper's decision means the pressure has been piled back on Wolves boss Dave Jones to find an experienced replacement during the transfer window. Signing a new goalkeeper has been one of Jones' priorities ever since the summer.
