Lescott's Back

Wolves defender Joleon Lescott today returned to full training after being given the all-clear on his groin problem. He had a scan last Thursday and withdrew from the England under-21 squad. But after some rest and treatment he has returned to boost the squad, although he will probably need a "cleaning-out" operation in the summer.

New Facilities Planned

When Wolves reach the Premiership they are planning to build a £3m training facility at their Compton base.
The club have secured a 50-year lease with Wolverhampton City Council and intend to use that security to create the training facility which will eventually see the entire football back-room operation moved two miles down the road from Molineux to the leafy suburbs of Compton, apart from matchdays. The training centre would have a top quality gym, medical, catering, relaxation, laundry and media facilities, as well as offices for the management and Academy staff.

Wolves chief Executive Jez Moxey told the Express and Star: "The training ground is an essential piece of the jigsaw puzzle.
"We have good pitches at Compton but not the supporting buildings.
"We have planning permission to create an indoor facility and I hope we would be able to start building in the not too distant future.
"But the only way we can do this is by getting to the Premiership. If we go up the funds we would earn would enable us to commit to a building project of £3m or maybe slightly more."
"The idea is that the training base becomes the football home of the club.
"I have looked at the facilities at Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle recently. If we are to achieve and sustain long-term development of players, as well as attract the best talent, we are going to have to have facilities commensurate with the top clubs.

Wolves also bought up the land where the old Molineux sports and social club used to be off Waterloo Road.
"I am also looking at the stadium as well, hence the reason to purchase the land next to the ground where the Molineux Youth Centre used to be," said Moxey.
"That is down to Sir Jack Hayward and the goodness of his heart.
"We felt strategically it was important to have that patch of land because we have one eye on expanding the ground and we don't want to find ourselves 'landlocked'."

Miller 1-0 Ivar

Wolves striker Kenny Miller has taken his goal scoring form to International level, he scored Scotland's opening goal after 11mins, taking his tally to 16 goals in 16 games. Cameron is on the Scottish bench and Ivar Ingimarsson, who is currently on loan at Brighton is in the Iceland defence. The final score was Scotland 2-1 Iceland, Miller was substituted after 81 minutes and Cameron stayed on the bench.
Other International news Matt Murray was on the bench for England's under 21s match against Portugal, which they lost 4-2, Joleon Lescott was pulled out of the squad to see a specialist about his groin problem. Mark Clyde was withdrawn from the Northern Ireland under 21s squad suffering with tendonitis in his right knee, but Sammy Clingan made his debut as a substitute for them in their defeat against Armenia.

Wolves didn't manage to sign anyone before the transfer deadline and no-one left Molineux either.

Reserves Lose

Wolves reserves lost to Rotherham reserves 1-0 last night and missed the chance to go top of the Avon Insurance League Premier Division. Rotherham scored the only goal of the game in the 51st minute when Byfield got in a close range header following Hoskins’ cross from the right. Michael Oakes showed tremendous reflexes in getting a hand to the ball, but he was unable to prevent it going in the net.

Unused Subs: A. Jones, Waite, Fletcher, Ludlam, Kay.
Yellow Card: Hudson.

Transfer News

Wolves boss Dave Jones is facing a race against time to sign Newcastle striker Carl Cort on loan before the transfer deadline on Thursday at 5pm. Negotiations stalled on Wednesday afternoon but are going to re-open on Thursday morning.
Jones said: "I doesn't look as if anything's going to happen today at least. But you never say never."

Bradford City are set to sign out of favour Wolves striker Michael Branch at the end of the season, but might do a deal before Thursday's deadline.
Bradford have confirmed they have been monitoring Branch's progress for some time and if Wolves pay up the remaining three months of his contract at Molineux, Branch will be free to join City.
Bradford also tried to sign him on loan without success but now look set to seal a permanent deal in the near future.
Branch has not featured for Wolves at all this season and spent a spell on loan at Third Division Hull.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss David Jones was full of smiles after the 6-0 hammering of Gillingham - a resounding rout which strengthened their determined push for a play-off spot.
Two goals each from Kenny Miller and Mark Kennedy, plus strikes from Colin Cameron and Nathan Blake, cemented Wanderers' place in the top six.
"I have been saying for ages we would give someone a good hiding and it's finally happened," said the delighted Jones.
"I asked my players to be positive after our 0-0 midweek draw against Stoke and they answered me in the best possible way."
Jones added: "I wanted us to be professional and my lads really turned the screw. Everything came off for us - you don't get too many games like that."

Wolves duo Kenny Miller and Colin Cameron have both been selected for the Scotland squad to play in the next round of Euro 2004 qualifiers against Iceland and Lituania. Wolves officials will now be contacting the Football League for permission to reschedule the Grimsby match.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones has vowed to disperse the "negativity" pervading Molineux.
Jones saw his side draw 0-0 at home to First Division strugglers Stoke, a result which heightened anxiety at Wolves, who infamously blew their chances of promotion to the Premiership last season from a seemingly invincible position.
Jones said: "People will say that's two points dropped but I think it's a good point for Wolves because if you can't take three, you'd want to take one.
"But no doubt I'll get up in the morning and the storm clouds will be here, I'll have to fight my way through the fog before having to cheer up the receptionist and then cheer up the groundsman.
"There always seems to be a negative side to things around this place and I will not allow that into my dressing room, I won't allow it.
"There are people who live in this area who will think of something negative and write it or say it.
"I hate negativity and I always try and look on the bright side, no matter how bad it looks you always look on the bright side - and I know that better than anyone.
"Back in December we were mediocre, going nowhere, finished. But now we're in a good position, fifth, and I'm not looking at those teams behind us, why should I? I'm looking forward."

The best goalscoring chance of the game arrived with just seven minutes remaining but Mark Kennedy's low drive through a crowded penalty area was cleared off the line by Stoke's Clive Clarke.
Jones added: "Stoke just sat there and they weren't coming out, in fact there was a 15-minute period when I don't think they set foot in our half.
"If their centre-backs had crossed the halfway line they would've needed a compass to get back.
"But the onus was on us and we couldn't break them down.
"They're delighted with their point but will a point be enough for Stoke at the end of the season? We'll have to wait and see."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "There was no great difference between the sides. They got a lucky break for the goal.
"Within the space of 24 hours I lost three of my defence but the lads who came in did a good job.
"Maybe the goal came about when the new defence was trying to sort things out.
"We are down to the bare bones at the moment but what disappoints me is that we had a lot of possession but did not get the break we needed."

Match Reaction

Wolves Dave Jones was delighted to put the smile back on Wolves fans' faces after his side bounced back from their FA Cup heartache to strengthen their claim on a first division play-off place.
Kenny Miller's 19th goal of the season was enough to earn Wolves a vital win at play-off rivals Reading.
The visitors quickly responded from the disappointment of losing at Southampton in Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final and Jones insisted he never had any fear of a cup hangover.
"Sunday was gone and we had moved on," said Jones, whose side are now eight points clear of next-best Ipswich.
He added: "In our situation it is all about taking each game as it comes - and I know that's a cliche.
"But as soon as the cup game was finished we were thinking about Reading and not dwelling on Southampton.
"All we are doing is chasing the team right in front of us and there is no way we can say we are in the play-offs yet.
"Reading are a good team and are well organised and this was a massive three points for us.
"The first 20 minutes could have produced a 5-5 scoreline but we got the goal when we were on top and then it was all about strangling the game and relying on catching Reading on the break."

Wolves survived to cling to their first ever win at the Madejski stadium, despite a prolonged period of stoppage time in a nail-biting second half.
"I thought the game was never going to end," said Jones.
"I can't work out where the referee got five extra minutes from and then he added two more on top of that but there was a bit of sweetness in the result.
"Both teams set up to get three points and this was a solid performance without being an electric one."

Youth Team Results

Wolves Academy teams both enjoyed victories on the weekend, the under 19s beating Liverpool 3-1 and the under 17s beat Bristol City 1-0, both at Compton Park.
The under 19s took an early lead through Gary Mulligan who scored with a powerful 15-yard header after a diagonal cross from Lewis Gobern.
But Liverpool equalised ten minutes later, then on 30 minutes Matt Watson put Gary Mulligan through and he lobbed the keeper for his second goal.
In the final minute of the half, a Sammy Clingan corner led to a scramble in the Liverpool box and Leon Clarke managed to convert from six-yards to seal the 3-1 victory.
Wolves under 17s got the only goal of the game in the eighth minute, a  header from Matthew Barnes-Homer following a good cross from the left by Daniel Jones.

Andrews Injury Update

Wolves midfielder Keith Andrews will miss the remainder of the season after X-rays confirmed he had suffered a broken leg (fibula).
Andrews started for only the third time this season in the FA Cup quarter-final tie against Southampton, standing in for the suspended Paul Ince, but was stretchered off after 61 minutes following an incident in the Wolves box as he attempted to clear the ball.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "Thankfully it doesn’t need an operation – we just need to reset it. But Keith is finished for the rest of the season.
"The priority now is to get him to see the specialist again next week. Then, hopefully, we’ll send him back to Ireland where he can have a bit of a longer holiday than he was expecting."
Explaining why he opted to start with Keith on Sunday, Dave explained: "We had decided to go like for like with the extra height.
"I thought Keith did well in the first-half but then, unfortunately, he got a kick on the leg and broke his bone.
"It’s very sad for the boy. He’s waited a long time to get this opportunity and now this has happened.
"We knew something was wrong. When players go down injured they tend to wriggle about all over the place but when they don’t move it’s a clear indication that there’s a serious problem.
"He certainly wasn’t moving and he said straight from the off that he had heard something click. Unfortunately, that turned out to be the case."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones felt Wolves slackened off in the second half after a promising display before the break.
He said: "We had chances in the first half but didn't take them. In the second half we didn't do ourselves justice, and that's why we are disappointed.
"We know we can play better. We did not play as well as we could. Full credit to Southampton - they started to dictate the game and the tempo of it in the second half, and we didn't get amongst them.
"We had the chances but didn't put them away.
"The first goal from Marsden was a bit fluky, and for the second we switched off. But it's no good feeling sorry for ourselves. The game has gone, and we can't do anything about it except learn from our mistakes."

Wolves manager Dave Jones was left anxiously waiting and hoping that midfielder Keith Andrews had not broken his leg during the game.
Andrews played in place of suspended skipper Paul Ince but was carried off on a stretcher after an hour with a suspected broken left leg.
The 22-year-old, who suffered the injury when he fell awkwardly inside his own penalty area, was taken immediately to a local private hospital for X-rays.
"The club doctor said it looked like Keith had broken his leg, although obviously I hope that isn't the case," said Jones.
"I am not sure exactly how he did it as I never saw the incident, but no other player was involved.
"I am hoping he will be allowed to come home with us tonight, we don't want to leave him, and the rest of the lads are prepared to wait around for him even if it takes a couple of hours."
Marsden - one of the players Jones signed for Saints when he was in charge - opened the scoring after 56 minutes and an own goal from stand-in skipper Paul Butler 10 minutes before the end sealed a place in the semi-finals for the Barclaycard Premiership side.
Jones and Marsden go back a long way to the days when they were together at Stockport, and the Wolves boss joked afterwards of how he had knocked out the midfielder for scoring the goal.
"Chris is flat out in the dressing room, I just knocked him out," joked Jones.
"Now I might go round and burn down his house! It was a soft goal, I don't think he has ever scored a good goal in his life.
"But seriously, I am just pleased with how Chris and the other players I had here welcomed me to the club and I wish them all the best in the semi-finals.
"I have no complaints with the result. We came here and didn't do ourselves justice."

Team News

Southampton: Sweden international Anders Svensson is confident he will be fit for Sunday after he limped out of the win over West Brom with an ankle injury. But after a week of intensive treatment he is hopeful of saving the Saints from a midfield crisis.
With Rory Delap (knee ligaments) out and David Prutton cup-tied, Gordon Strachan will be forced into a major reshuffle if Svensson does not make it.
Chris Marsden and Matt Oakley are obivious candidates for the central roles, while Jo Tessem, Paul Telfer and Wayne Bridge could all slot in on the opposite flank to the versatile Fabrice Fernandes.

Wolves: will be without captain Paul Ince, who begins a two-match ban for picking up ten bookings so far this season.
Striker George Ndah is also out after tearing a hamstring at Crystal Palace last week. Nathan Blake, who deputised in the draw with Ipswich, is the favourite to partner top scorer Kenny Miller in attack, though Dean Sturridge and Adam Proudlock give boss Dave Jones other options.
Alex Rae is the likely deputy for Ince, but Keith Andrews could also come into consideration.

6th March 2003

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones was left fuming at referee Mike Jones' decision not to dismiss Thomas Gaardsoe after striker Kenny Miller was felled while clear on goal. Instead, the Chester official showed the yellow card.
Dave Jones said: "I told the referee and the fourth official this was a big game with big players.
"The ref said Kenny didn't have control of the ball but in situations like that does it matter?
"Kenny was away from him and the one thing about strikers is that they don't go down when they can score.
"For me, it's a big decision he's missed. But I think we played some really good football and I don't think there's any reason for the fans to have gone away upset at the way we've played the game.
"I think Ipswich are one of the top sides in this division and to take four points out a team like that is a good return.
"They have got some great players and for a neutral in the crowd, it must have been a great game to watch.
"We knew they would have the ball at certain stages of the game but they didn't hurt us at all.
"Paul Ince was superb and got us the goal but we couldn't get that crucial second goal to kill the game.
"It was lapses in concentration at the end of the game which cost us dear, a lapse in giving away a silly free-kick and a lapse because no-one picked up Naylor in the box."

Team News

Wolves: are without injured striker George Ndah, who has a hamstring strain. Nathan Blake could return to the first team although Dean Sturridge is another option available to boss Dave Jones.
Left back Lee Naylor and midfielder Paul Ince both picked up knocks in the 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, but are expected to be fit. But there are doubts over Shaun Newton and Colin Cameron, so Alex Rae could come into the team.

Ipswich: could be without 11-goal midfielder Darren Ambrose, who has a knee injury. But striker Marcus Bent is back in training and could be included in attack. Defender John McGreal (back) is unlikely to play so skipper Matt Holland could continue in defence.

Youth Results

Both Wolves academy sides won their games this weekend. The under 19s scored six goals against Huddersfield Town at Compton Park on Saturday. Gary Mulligan headed them into to the lead from a cross by Ashley Vincent in the 10th minute, Matthew Watson got Wolves second from 15-yards on 21 minutes, then Sammy Clingan headed their third just before the break.
Ashley Vicent scored Wolves fourth after 60 minutes with a far post header from Lewis Gobern’s centre. Sammy Clingan and John Fitter then combined to create the chance for Matthew Watson to get his second and Wolves fifth. Huddersfield pulled one back but Leon Clarke ran onto a Gary Mulligan pass to make it six in the 72nd minute.
Wolves under 17s traveled to Wimbledon and won 3-0. Wolves took the lead in the 56th minute through Tom Bonner who scored from just inside the box. Ten minutes later Chris Cornes picked up a poor clearance and beat two men before scoring with an angled drive into the corner, then, in the 74th minute, Tom Bonner got a third from close in after a cross from Gareth Musson.

Ivar Loan Extended

Wolves have agreed to let Ivar Ingimarsson stay at Brighton on loan for a second month.
He has played in Brighton's last three games and his month's loan was due to end after Saturday's home game against Rotherham.
Wolves boss Dave Jones has covered himself by insisting that Ingimarsson is on instant recall and will return to Molineux if injuries pile up.
Brighton boss Steve Coppell said: "Dave Jones is happy that Ivar is getting first-team football and from our point of view he's slotted in well and is proving a solid performer.
"We've got to hope that Dave Jones doesn't run into injury problems and that Ivar can stay on."

Injury Update

Wolves have confirmed that striker George Ndah's scan has revealed he has torn his hamstring and will miss Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final against Southampton.
Other casualties from Saturday's 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace included Shaun Newton and Colin Cameron both picked up foot injuries and Lee Naylor damaged his knee.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "We have got back-up for George because Nathan is fit now, Dean is back and we've got Adam.
"But it's really unfortunate for George. I don't know how long he's going to be ruled out for until the physios have assessed all the results."
Ndah said: "I'm really disappointed, I've had such a good run in the Cup. I'm gutted I won't have the chance to keep it going.
"But there is nothing I can do to change things. Because of the type of injury I've got the physios can't put a timescale on it so I've just got to keep going and concentrate all my efforts on getting fit again."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones was full of praise for hat-trick striker Kenny Miller.
"Kenny is on fire at the moment.
"When you work your socks off and you're a good player, like he is, you will get your rewards.
"His hat-trick was the bonus but we earned the right to get into a winning position and stayed patient.
"We have had good momentum since the turn of the year but all we are trying to do is chase the team immediately above us."
