Friendly Win

Wolves beat Coventry 3-1 in a reserve friendly at Compton Park this afternoon.
Charlie Mulgrew made a successful comeback in the game playing for the 90 minutes after his four month injury lay-off.

Wolves took the lead in the 64th minute after Bennett had pulled the ball back to Davies. The striker's shot struck a defender and bounced to substitute midfielder Alex Melbourne who turned and crossed for Liam Hughes to head home at the far post.
Eight minutes later Davies grabbed a second with a ferocious effort after Mark Little had run half the length of the field along the right hand touchline before slipping a pass inside to the striker.
And, with two minutes remaining, Bennett provided the centre that saw Chris Duggan heading into his own net as he attempted to clear.
In stoppage time, Matty West scored a consolation goal for the visitors after he had been set up by Dave Burtoft.

Wolves: Budtz (Lumley 88), Little, Mulgrew, Gleeson, Riley (L. Collins 70), Craddock, E. Bennett, Salmon (Ijaha 80), C. Davies (Tulloch 86), Bothroyd (Melbourne 45), Hughes.

England Under 19's

Wolves youngsters Mark Davies and Mark Little, played for the entire game as England's under 19s beat Turkey 1-0 at Doncaster's Keepmoat Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The only goal of the game came from Norwich City striker Chris Martin just five minutes from time.

Mark Little said on WOW: "It was good. We did what we needed to do and it was a successful performance for the team.
"We had been talking about keeping clean sheets because that's hugely important at international level, and we were pleased that we managed to achieve that as well.
"Both me and Sparky (Mark Davies) played the full game and I thought he did well.
"For me it is about working on my distribution and stuff like that and the manager said afterwards that I did really well so I was quite pleased.
"He said that it is going to be difficult to choose a squad for the (European under 19s) Championships this summer, but I am hoping that me and Sparky might be in with a shout."

22nd March 2007

Ricketts Goes Out On Loan

QPR boss John Gregory has beaten the deadline to complete the signing of Wolves midfielder Rohan Ricketts on loan until the end of the season.
The 24-year-old arrived at Molineux from Tottenham on loan in March 2005 and made the move permanent that summer.
However, first-team opportunities have been limited this season and he has not featured for Mick McCarthy's side since the FA Cup defeat to West Brom in January.
QPR are currently a point from the Championship drop zone and Ricketts has vowed to help them beat the drop.

21st March 2007

Henry Out For Rest Of Season

Wolves midfielder Karl Henry is resigned to missing the rest of the season because his recovery from injury is taking longer than expected.
Henry was diagnosed as having suffered bruising to the spleen at Luton earlier this month and doctors have informed him there has been little improvement.

Henry said: "I will be lucky to get back before the end of the season because it has not really improved.
"I feel absolutely fine in myself and I am in no pain at all, but I have been told to have complete rest, so I cannot swim, jog or do anything.
"I would have preferred an ankle or some sort of leg injury because maybe you could play through that or have a time limit on how long you are going to be out."

20th March 2007

Johnson Staying At Leeds For Season

Wolves have agreed to extend Jemal Johnson's loan spell at Leeds until the end of the season.
The 22-year-old striker arrived on loan at Elland Road for an initial month on 19th February and has so far made four appearances, including two starts.
The American, who began his career in England as a trainee at Blackburn before switching to Wolves last summer, was forced to miss Leeds' weekend draw at Southend through injury.
Johnson was knocked out and stretchered from the field in a neck brace after colliding with Leicester goalkeeper Paul Henderson in the recent draw at the Walkers Stadium.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has insisted on a 24-hour recall clause in Johnson's loan agreement.

19th March 2007

Keeper Extends Loan

Doncaster goalkeeper Jan Budtz has extended his loan spell at Molineux until the end of April.
He made his debut as a half-time substitute in the 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and was due to return to the League One play-off hopefuls.
But with first-choice keeper Matt Murray currently nursing a knee injury and Michael Oakes and Carl Ikeme also short of fitness, Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has opted to keep Budtz for a further six weeks.

Budtz said: "It has been great to be at Wolves and Matt Murray is the best keeper I have ever worked with.
"I have learned a lot from him as well as Bobby Mimms who is a really good goalkeeping coach.
"There is a really hungry team here with talent who want to win games so I am riding on that wave and enjoying it."

18th March 2007

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was relieved his side snatched a late point.
He said: "I'll take it, it's a fair result. We had our good spells and created chances but we conceded two lousy goals.
"Simek deserved his red card. I don't think he played the ball and even if he did it was an unacceptable challenge.
"I guarantee had it been the other way around, Brian Laws would have reacted just the way I did."

Another Youngster Turns Pro

Wolves youngster Matthew Bailey has signed his first professional contract at Molineux.
The midfielder, 18, has been with the club since the age of eight and will become a member of the first team when pre-season training starts in July.

Academy boss Chris Evans said on WOW: "Matt has come to the end of his apprenticeship and we are delighted he has impressed enough to earn a deal.
"He has overcome many hurdles since he joined and deserves his chance."

14th March 2007

Murray Update

Matt Murray should be fit for Saturday's game against Sheffield Wednesday.
The keeper injured his knee after landing awkwardly towards the end of last night's match at Coventry, but physio Barry Holmes is hopeful the problem will be short-lived.

He said on WOW: "Matt has been in today for assessment and we have been assured it's nothing serious. He just jarred his knee.
"We'll let him have a bit of rest and then look at him again before the weekend, but he should be ok."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy was also critical of the referee for sending off McNamara but refused to blame his side's first defeat in nine matches on playing two games in the space of three days.

McCarthy said: "I am not sure about the sending-off and I would have to see it again before I comment on it.
"But I definitely thought the first yellow card was unlucky and for the second he was stumbling and fell over into the player. But I will put my comments about the referee in my report.
"I don't think playing two games in the space of three days is too much for my players but I think it gives a distinct advantage to the opposition. It's even more of an advantage when you have only got 10 men on the field."

Despite the setback McCarthy remained philosophical in defeat and had nothing but praise for his players.
He added: "Don't expect a wake because we have lost a game because those players have done ever so well in recent weeks. They have been absolutely brilliant.
"We had to get beaten at some stage. We weren't going to carry on until the end of the season winning and we just move on to Saturday.
"I certainly don't think it is a case of having to lift the players because they have been flying."

Team News

Coventry: striker Kevin Kyle is out with a hip injury, while fellow strikers Leon McKenzie (thigh) and Dele Adebola (facial wound) are both doubtful.
Defensive duo Andy Whing and David McNamee return to contention.

Wolves: are confident defender Gary Breen will shake off a dead leg to face his former club.
Midfielder Karl Henry is still ruled out with the bruised spleen that forced him to miss the Black Country derby win over West Brom.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy refused to get carried away with his side's promotion hopes after Jay Bothroyd's late strike sent them above local rivals West Brom into fourth place, with their sixth straight win. McCarthy admits he is keen to stay hot on the heels of former side Sunderland, he knows there is still plenty of work to be done.

He said: "They keep tipping Sunderland to win it, we are only a point behind them so hopefully we can tag along on their coat-tails and keep ticking along nicely.
"The season would not have ended here just because we had won, lost or drawn. Just because it's West Brom people get carried away.
"Our season is not done, we have nine more games starting at Coventry on Tuesday and they are in form too.
"Let's not get carried away and complacent just because we have beat Albion."

McCarthy challenged substitute Bothroyd to repeat his goal scoring exploits on a regular basis after his late strike sealed the points.
He said: "He is knocking on the door but he has to do it week in, week out."
"He has been fantastic in training and looked all week like he was going to be a good sub for us.
"Rightly he has had his nose out of joint because he has other lads (Andy Keogh and Stephen Ward) playing up front ahead of him.
"But we have all seen here what a player he is and he deserves praise for getting himself fitter because he is far better now."

Rosa Goes Out On Loan

Midfielder Denes Rosa has joined Cheltenham Town on a month's emergency loan.
Town boss John Ward watched him in Tuesday's reserve friendly against Crewe at Compton Park, when he scored one of Wolves goals in a 2-0 victory.
His only senior appearance this season was in the Carling Cup tie at Chesterfield back in August.
Denes is eligible to play in Cheltenham's game against Yeovil at Whaddon Road tomorrow. The loan lasts up to and including Easter Monday, the 9th April, meaning he will be available to play in six games.

Keeper Call Up Shock

Surprise and confusion surrounds the call up of Carl Ikeme into the Nigerian national squad.
The 37 strong party for the forthcoming African Nations Cup qualifier against Uganda has been named in the media. Carl's inclusion came as something of a shock to not only Wolves officials, but the player himself.
The club has received no official notification of his call-up although the paperwork has arrived for Seyi Olofinjana, who has also been named in Bertie Vogts'squad for the game which will take place on Saturday 24th March.

Carl said on WOW: "Someone told me that they had seen my name in the squad in a newspaper. The news came completely out of the blue to me.
"My dad's Nigerian so I do qualify to play for them, although I'm not fit at the moment. But I'd definitely like to be involved in the future."

The goalkeeper damaged an ankle during training in mid January and today he was travelling with physio Barry Holmes to London to see a consultant about the injury.
Barry added on WOW: "Carl will be seeing the same ankle specialist that helped Matt Murray back to full fitness.
"He will be able to advise us as to what the next stage of Carl's rehabilitation should be."

Black Country Derby Update

Police in Wolverhampton are advising motorists and pedestrians to expect some diversions around Molineux and adjacent roads on Sunday, after the match against West Brom.
A number of roads may be closed for public safety reasons and police are asking fans to be aware that they may not be able to leave Molineux via usual routes, but diversions will be in place.
Pubs in the city centre will not be opening until 10.30am and the two pubs near the ground, the Feathers and the Wanderer, will not open until 3pm following consultation with licensees.
Molineux will be serving alcohol to home fans only up to kick off, when sales will cease.

6th March 2007

Another Friendly Win

Wolves have won another reserve friendly today, 2-0 against Crewe at Compton Park.

Gleeson scored first in the 40th minute, Craig Davies fired in a cross from the left and Gleeson was waiting beyond the far post to drill home an angled shot.
Rosa scored the second after 59 minutes, Gleeson delivered a short cross to the Hungarian midfielder who cut inside before lashing home a right foot shot that Tomlinson managed to touch onto the underside of the bar but couldn't keep out.

Wolves: Budtz, Little, Jones (Spalding 45), Gleeson (Ijaha 71), Collins, Craddock (Riley 71), Bennett (Ricketts 78), Salmon (Bailey 68), Davies (Bennett 87), Hughes, Rosa.

Wolves Players Win Award

Wolves players Stephen Ward and Wayne Hennessey who is on lona at Stockport, have been honoured in February's Player of the Month awards.

The Championship award went to Ward following his tremendous goalscoring form since arriving from Irish side Bohemians in the January transfer window. The frontman opened his account for Wolves in early February by getting on the scoresheet in their home draw against Plymouth. He then followed this up with the winning strike in his side's victories over both Burnley and Ipswich to help Mick McCarthy's men end the month just outside the play-off places.

Chris Kamara, chairman of the awards panel, said: "Throughout his managerial career Mick McCarthy has had a habit of unearthing some real gems from lower league football and it looks like he's found another in Stephen Ward. The Irishman has been a revelation since joining from Bohemians in January, chipping in with three vital goals to help Wolves stay on course for a play-off place."

Hennessey's four clean sheets for Stockport in February helped to make Football League history, with the Hatters becoming the first side to notch up nine consecutive clean-sheet victories. The Wales Under-21 international has now gone a total of 810 minutes without conceding a goal since joining on loan from Wolves in January. This incredible run has kept the Hatters firmly in the hunt for a play-off place in League Two.

Kamara said: "Wayne Hennessey is a young goalkeeper with a big future in the game. He quickly developed a strong understanding with his back four when he arrived in January and this has been there for all to see in recent weeks, as his side have notched up an incredible nine wins on the bounce without conceding a goal. To break a Football League record in the process is something which Wayne should be very proud of."

4th March 2007

Match Reaction

McCarthy said after the match: "I was not happy with the tosh we produced for the 20 minutes before half-time, because we let them back into the game.
"We had some good fortune for the winner, thanks to their keeper's mistake, and we had to play to the conditions, because it was a difficult pitch.
"Have we found momentum at the right time? It would appear so. I am not going to deny that.
"But with this league, you are never far away from a kick up the backside to bring you down."
