Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said: "You could see by our reaction on the bench how much it meant to us.
"I thought we played well enough to win, perhaps not in the manner in which we nicked it.
"But we were the better side in the first half and I thought we deserved to win."
Speaking about Ebanks-Blake, McCarthy added: "We have got a good player there. I've known about him ever since he was in Manchester United's reserves. I thought Plymouth did well to sign him and I'm pleased we managed to get him.
"But I thought the saves by Wayne Hennessey were hugely important. He's a good keeper."

Gleeson Loaned Again

Wolves midfielder Stephen Gleeson has joined Stockport for a second loan spell until the end of the season.
The 19-year-old Republic of Ireland international, who previously made 14 starts while on loan with the Hatters last season, joins following a one-month loan stay with promotion rivals Hereford, where he made just four appearances.
After returning to Edgeley Park, Gleeson has backed the fifth placed Hatters to displace his former team Hereford from third automatic promotion place.

Internationals Update

Freddy Eastwood took his tally for Wales to four when he netted both of his team's goals in a 2-0 victory in Luxembourg last night.
The Molineux striker opened his account in the 37th minute when he took a pass from Jason Koumas and rode a number of challenges before dispatching a low shot into the opposite corner of the net.
Within two minutes of the interval, he struck again converting confidently after Fulham's Simon Davies had fired over a low cross.

On Tuesday evening Andy Keogh and Darron Gibson both played for the 90 minutes of Ireland under 21's European Championship qualifier against Montenegro in Galway.
Keogh headed a 73rd minute equaliser after Montenegro had gone in front five minutes earlier.
Stephen Gleeson, who has just gone on loan to Stockport, was an unused substitute for the game which finished one all.

Charlie Mulgrew, currently on loan from Wolves at Southend, came on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes of Scotland under 21's European Championship qualifier against Finland in Aberdeen. The home side enjoyed a narrow 2-1 victory.

Hennessey Injury Update

Wolves goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is on course to be fit for Saturday's match at promotion rivals Charlton after treatment on a pulled hamstring.
Hennessey was injured in the 3-3 draw with QPR and missed Wales Under-21's friendly with Bosnia on Tuesday night.

Hennessey said on WOW: "I felt my hamstring before the end of Saturday's game and when I trained with Wales on Sunday I pulled up jogging.
"It's not too bad and I feel I'll be okay for the weekend."
Wolves go to Charlton on Saturday looking to maintain their charge for a play-off place.
Mick McCarthy's side are the form team of the Championship, having taken 14 points from their last seven games.
And Hennessey says things are buoyant in the dressing room at the moment.
"We've all got the belief we can do it so we've just got to show it on the pitch. We've got to keep going and keep our heads.
"We've got to reach the play-offs, definitely - but we have some tough games coming up."

25th March 2008

International Sold Out

The last tickets for tonight's England under 21 v Poland under 21 at Molineux have been sold.
They are now asking people to not travel unless you have booked a seat.

Rosa Returns

Midfielder Denes Rosa returns from a four month injury lay off when he plays in this afternoon's reserve game against Nottingham Forest at Telford.
The Hungarian, who netted nine goals for the reserves before suffering a groin injury, is the only member of the Wolves squad with any senior experience for a game against the newly crowned Pontin's Central League Champions.

23rd March 2008

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said after the match: "That might well turn out to be the most valuable point we have got all season.
"I don't remember when we have played as well as that. That's as good as we have been. We had our chances and we certainly deserved to get level.
"Our penalty should never have been given but it levelled things off.
"They got a very good third goal but we kept on fighting and my players showed great character to make it 3-3."

Silky Sylvan

Ebanks-Blake breaks into Actim top 10.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake moved into the top 10 in The Actim Index, the official player ratings system of the Coca-Cola Championship, as he helped Wolverhampton Wanderers maintain their play-off push.
After drawing a blank in the 2-1 defeat by Preston at Deepdale, the former Manchester United striker responded by posting 31 points in a goalscoring performance as Wolves beat Burnley 3-1 at Turf Moor.
His tally was enough to haul him up five places to eighth in the Index with 501 points.
Ebanks-Blake is one of four Wolves players in the top 100 with Wayne Hennessey (455 points), Kevin Foley (391) and Karl Henry (367) sitting 21st, 60th and 82nd respectively.
Analysis of all Championship games is taking place throughout the season and so far the top five Wolves players are:

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy claimed his side "achieved what they had to achieve" by beating Scunthorpe.
Neill Collins' late goal kept Wolves play-off push on course as they came from behind to seal a 2-1 victory at Molineux.
The result moved them to within a point of sixth-placed Plymouth and still with a game in hand over many of their promotion rivals.

"We won, nothing else really matters at this moment in time," McCarthy said. "We achieved what we had to achieve."
He added: "We've won, that's all we can do and we'll turn up on Saturday and try to do the same.
"I'm just pleased with the way we reacted and won the game. We are not going to get any plaudits for the way we played or anything else.
"All I do is get great pleasure from looking at the league and seeing we have three more points."

Scunthorpe took the lead after only four minutes when Grant McCann delivered a pinpoint corner from the right and Andy Butler rose highest to power a header into the left corner.
Michael Gray's deflected half-volley pulled Wanderers level early in the second half and defender Collins headed home substitute Matt Jarvis' cross to complete the comeback with seven minutes remaining.
It gave Wolves only a second win from their last eight league games at Molineux, a run of form in direct contrast to their fortunes away from home, where they have won three of the last four.
"It's not more difficult to play here," McCarthy insisted. "We are getting to the stage of the season where expectations are high, it's the same at every ground.
"It's not just here. I would imagine that Colchester, Crystal Palace and Burnley are all smarting from us winning there.

Wolves: McCarthy could be without Darren Potter as the former Liverpool midfielder is struggling with a groin injury.
Defender Gary Breen is expected to return after recovering from a bout of the flu.
News of Breen's defensive return will come as a boost to McCarthy as Jody Craddock and Rob Edwards are both sidelined with hamstring problems.

Scunthorpe: manager Nigel Adkins is prepared to offer Martin Paterson (hamstring) every opportunity to prove his fitness by making a late assessment on the striker's availability.
Winger Ian Morris is also struggling with illness, but on-loan duo Jack Hobbs and Curtis Weston, from Liverpool and Leeds respectively, are expected to play a role.

Match Reaction

Mick McCarthy said after the match: "We got what we deserved today, we were the better side. There is always two sides to every goal. I have been complaining about our mistakes so maybe we got a slice of luck which made a difference. But don't take away from how well we have played.
"We had to win to get back on track and the only thing we have been consistent about is our inconsistency."

Bothroyd Out On Loan

Wolves have allowed striker Jay Bothroyd to join Championship rivals Stoke on a month-long loan deal.
The 25-year-old, who has scored four goals this season, has not started a game for Mick McCarthy's side since the FA Cup defeat at Cardiff last month.
Pulis has moved for Bothroyd to help fill the void left by the injury to Mamady Sidibe.
McCarthy is willing to loan out former Arsenal youngster Bothroyd as he is well down the pecking order at Molineux.

"Jay has not been involved recently and Tony Pulis is looking for someone to replace the injured Mamady Sidibe," said McCarthy
"I told Jay if he wanted to play at the moment he would have to go out on loan.
"One or two League One sides have been in for him but he didn't want to drop down a division - but then Stoke came in."
Stoke, in second place, are currently on course for promotion to the Premier League while Wolves are 11th and McCarthy hopes Bothroyd can aid his side's promotion bid.
McCarthy added: "They aren't in competition with us and maybe Jay can do us a favour and do a bit of damage to our competitors."

12th March 2008

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy said about the penalty: "I have articulated my thoughts to the referee very politely and pleasantly.
"Of course it changed the game, then we defended badly for the second goal which was a fabulous finish.
McCarthy added: "I thought our performance as a whole was okay. When we scored the goal we were on top.
"We should have gone on and finished it. We have not been scoring enough goals. We have not had enough goals from any department on the field.
"Even the winner came from us giving the ball away.
"We keep losing a bit of ground. I am not going to get wrapped up in it. We will try to keep ourselves in the hunt all the way to the very end.
"Obviously I want to be top, 10 points clear, but I am nowhere near it."

Winger Passes Away

From www.wolves.co.uk:
Wolves was today saddened by the news of the death of former Molineux winger Les Smith.
He passed away in Mary Stevens Hospice in Stourbridge at the age of 80 after a long battle against cancer.
Les, who joined Wolves as an amateur in 1945, made his senior debut for the club in April 1947. He had made a total of 94 appearances and scored 24 goals by the time he joined Aston Villa in the winter of 1956.
His appearances for Stan Cullis's team were limited by the form of regular wingers Johnny Hancocks and Jimmy Mullen but he was a member of the side that beat Honved in that memorable friendly in December 1954.
Following his move to Villa Park, he won an FA Cup winners medal at Wembley when the Birmingham side beat Manchester United in the 1957 final.
Everyone at Wolverhampton Wanderers would like to offer their sincere condolences to Les's wife Mavis and to all of his family and friends.

Meanwhile, Wolves defender Mark Little has extended his loan at Sixfields for a third and final month

5th March 2008

Match Reaction

Boss Mick McCarthy said: "The game was rubbish, it was awful for an hour.
"We get our goal and suddenly it explodes with a penalty decision that shouldn't have been a penalty.
"Then there was a sending off, it was strange. We should have won the game.
"I find it very difficult to talk about the game and certain things because I might get myself into trouble so I won't."
But McCarthy admitted there was still no excuse for his side conceding deep into injury-time.
He added: "I'm not pleased with the fact it was a corner because I feel we should have competed better for the first header.
"I know there are substitutions being made so people have got jobs but we have got one man extra than them and it should have been stopped. To say I'm not pleased is an understatement."
The only positive McCarthy was able to take from the game was the goalscoring form of Ebanks-Blake, who is quickly establishing himself as a firm favourite with fans following his arrival from Plymouth in January.
"Sylvan does what he does really well," he added. "He took his two chances really well and then to have conceded is unforgivable really."

Kightly Voted Young Player Of The Year

Wolves Michael Kightly has won the FourFourTwo Young Player of the Year Award for the Coca-Cola Football League at the 2008 Football League Awards incorporating FourFourTwo’s Top 50 Football League Players.
The announcement was made at a gala dinner at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Sunday 2nd March 2008.
The 22-year-old Wolves midfielder received the accolade as a result of being ranked 3rd in the FourFourTwo Top 50 Football League Players which was announced on the night. This made him the highest ranked under-21 representative, and as a result, the FourFourTwo Young Player of the Year for the Coca-Cola Football League.
Commenting on the 2008 Football League Awards, The Football League Chairman, Lord Mawhinney, said: “For the third consecutive year, The Football League Awards has been an enormous success.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy praised his Colchester counterpart Geraint Williams after plunging the Us deeper into the relegation mire with a 1-0 win at Layer Road.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake's 30th-minute strike was enough to give the Black Country side all three points in a scrappy game.
While Wolves boosted their play-off hopes, the Us have a real fight on their hands to stay in the Championship.
However, McCarthy feels in Williams Colchester have the best man for the job.
He said: "I think Geraint Williams has done a magnificent job at Colchester.
"They lost Wayne Brown from the heart of their defence and I think Geraint has done brilliantly.
"It is a thankless task at the bottom of the table, but we won't give up.
"Every team in the Championship is difficult - there are no easy games in this division.
"The games are ebbing away now and it's an important three points for us."
