Reserve And Youth Team

Wolves reserves were beaten 4-1 by Barnsley reserves at Telford on Monday afternoon, ending their challenge for the Avon Premier League title.
Barnsley took the lead in the 13th minute, Bertos corner was headed by Jones into the path of Carrington who made no mistake from eight-yards with a low shot.
Three minutes into the second half Barnsley went two up after being awarded a free-kick five yards outside the area. Steve Hayward’s kick was perfectly placed curling over the wall and into the top corner despite Federici’s best efforts to keep the ball out.
Clarke pulled one back for Wolves in the 71st minute, he ran onto a Gobern pass and drove the ball past keeper Craig Parry and into the corner of the net.
But Barnsley scored again within two minutes of Wolves goal, Jones heading home a Bertos centre.
Bertos got Barnsley's fourth in injury time with a similar free-kick to that of Hayward.

Wolves Reserves: Federici, Fitter, Talbott, Mahon (McGrane 60), Townsend, Flynn, Vincent (Mulligan 41), Walters, Clarke, Watson, Gobern.

The Wolves academy under 17s side have missed out on the chance of progressing in the end of season play-offs after losing 7-1 at Arsenal on Saturday. Coach Keith Downing rated the Gunners team as the best he has seen this season and he feels that the Molineux youngsters will have taken something from the experience even though they lost by 7-1.

Match Reaction

The dramatic match failed to impress Wolves manager Dave Jones, who watched his side throw away the lead twice.
Jones was forced to alter hs starting line-up with both Denis Irwin and Paul Ince lacking fitness, but the Molineux boss was disappointed with the attitude of his players.

"It was entertaining for the fans but for my standards it wasn't good enough, and that's what I've told my players," said Jones.
"We started sloppy, and we finished sloppy. You can't do that and there's a lesson to be learned today.
"It reminded me of a pre-season game when there's nothing up for grabs.
"But we still want to finish as high as we can. That's what we strive for.

Wolves sent a young reserve side who drew their away fixture against Bury. Eight of the starting line-up had played in five games of an under 18s tournament in France over Easter (see below).
Former Molineux Academy goalkeeper Lewis Solly who was recently released by Wolves, was in goal for Bury. Both sides had chances but neither could break the deadlock.

Unused Subs: Maden, Buchanan.

Unused Subs: Townsend, Brown, McGrane.

From www.wolves.co.uk: Wolves under 18s have brought home the silverware after a successful tournament in France at the weekend. The youngsters beat opposition from several European countries – including Portuguese side Boavist Porto in the final. Leon Clarke was voted player of the tournament as well as being top goalscorer, whilst Carl Ikeme was named best goalkeeper. “In 18 years of travelling to youth tournaments this was probably the best trip I’ve ever been part of,” says coach John Perkins.
“The players’ attitude, discipline and the way they played their football was first class. To win the trophy was icing on the cake.”
The event was the 24th International Tournament, organised by FC St Joseph’s, near St Etienne. The host club was represented by a French select X1. Also taking part were Woolongong Wolves (Australia), St Etienne (France), Boavista Porto (Portugal), Valencia (Spain), Wislakrakov (Poland) and USF Puy-en-velay (Croatia).
The competition was organised into two mini leagues with games 25 minutes each way.

Wolves’ results were as follows:
v Boavist Porto – lost 0-1
v St Etienne – won 5-0 (Clarke 3, Mulligan, Cornes)
v St Joseph’s - won 2-0 (Clarke, Mulligan pen)

The semi final was contested against Valencia. Wolves took a first half lead through Gary Mulligan. The Spaniards equalised and the game went to a penalty shoot-out, Wanderers winning 3-2 thanks to successful spot kicks from Mulligan, Michael Townsend and Nathan Talbot. Monday's final against Boavista, who hadn’t conceded throughout, was a close affair. Wolves took the lead in the first half through Clarke. Porto fought back to equalise in the second but, with 15 minutes to go, John Steele scored following an Ashley Vincent corner to give Wanderers a 2-1 victory and the tournament title.

The Steve Bull Stand

Wolves chairman Sir Jack Haywood has announced that the John Ireland Stand is going to be renamed the Steve Bull Stand.
The letters on the outside of the stand will changed during the summer to honour the goal scoring legend.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones saw his side beat Norwich 3-0 at Carrow Road to secure a place in the Division One play-offs and put 12 months of hurt behind them.
Last season the men from Molineux lost out to the Canaries in the play-off semi-finals.
But a year later they gained sweet revenge with second half goals from George Ndah, Dean Sturridge and Kenny Miller to earn them a comprehensive 3-0 win and also end Norwich's outside chances of making the play-offs.
"I think we laid a few ghosts to rest," said Jones.
"I thought it was a good solid performance from us and the longer the game went the more electric we became.
"I thought the first half was pretty even with both sides having their chances but, in the second half, we just cut them in half, especially when they had to start chasing the game.
"It wasn't about getting revenge for last season - it was about seeing them off this season and that's what we've done.
"There was a lot of talk before hand about Wolves slipping up but we've come here today and put in the performance worthy of the travelling fans, and picked up the three points we needed to get in the play-offs.
"I've just told the players that's the easy part and the hard part is yet to come.
"We've got to keep it going now and keep our feet on the pedal because in football you can't turn it off and then turn it on again.
"But we're fit, we're strong and every player in the squad is on his game and we are ready for the challenges that lie ahead."

Norwich: defender Darren Kenton (sickness) is struggling to be fit but midfielder Phil Mulryne could feature more prominently after 45 minutes against Walsall on Saturday.
Sixteen-year-old Ryan Jarvis should keep his place in the squad after impressing on his debut as a substitute.

Wolves: striker Nathan Blake serves the second of his three-match suspension.
Defender Mark Clyde is still struggling with a knee problem and may be forced to sit out again.

Match Reaction

Wolves strengthened their play-off spot with a 3-0 win over Millwall but boss Dave Jones was still unhappy.
Shaun Newton fired Wolves into a fifth-minute lead and, Colin Cameron made it 2-0 12 minutes from time and Newton wrapped up victory with his second of the afternoon two minutes later.
But Jones was more concerned with the goals that got away than the ones that secured three vital points that boosted Wolves' play-off hopes.
"We should have scored more goals than we did," said Jones. "We played some good football but it was all about not getting frustrated with ourselves."
Wolves' win lifted them to fifth spot in the table and four points above play-off chasing Ipswich.
"Our fate is in our own hands and that's just how I want it," added Jones. "That's why it is important we took all three points.
"I couldn't understand why we were only 1-0 up at half-time because we had created chance after chance after chance.
"But as long as we kept playing the same kind of football I knew we would get the result we wanted."

Millwall: former Wolves boss Mark McGhee will keep faith with the side which beat Derby. Injury and Ticket Update

Wolves are expecting Denis Irwin to be fit in time for the visit of Millwall on Saturday. He suffered a hip injury during the first half of Wolves 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest and was substituted at half-time.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "We’ve still got the one slight concern in Denis but, fingers crossed, he should be OK
"Friday was something like his third game in six days and I think he just felt a little bit tired.
"The hip was inflamed and then he got a kick on it, a bang and then a knock on it. But, he’ll be fine, he’s been running today and now we’ll leave him with the physio’s for a couple of days to work it and then he’ll join in back with us towards the end of the week.
"Everyone else is OK, they’re in fine fettle. We had a good morning’s work where they looked sharp and fresh after a couple of days’ break."

Wolves are advising fans to buy their tickets in advance for Saturday's home match with Millwall. Tickets are still available in the Billy Wright, Jack Harris and John Ireland stands, but the Stand Cullis Stand has now sold out. The club is unable yet to confirm whether tickets will be available on the turnstiles. All areas of the ground are open to Wolves fans as there is no away supports allowed.

Clingan Gets Contract

Wolves academy graduate midfielder Sammy Clingan has signed a three-year contract at Molineux. He has just completed his third year at Wolves but hasn't yet played in the first team. He has been a member of the squad on a number of occasions and went on the Wolvess pre-season tour of Portugal and also recently got into the Northern Ireland under 21 team.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said on WOW: "We are delighted that Sammy has signed the new deal.
"It is the unanimous opinion of the football staff at Molineux that he has great potential. Now it is up to him to keep working hard and realising that potential.
"A big challenge lies ahead of him if he is to establish himself and become a first team regular, but this contract is a reward for what he has already achieved in his three years with the club."

Ingy Loan Extended

Icelandic international Ivar Ingimarsson is staying on loan at Brighton until the end of the season. Ivar, who joined Wolves from Brentford last summer started in 12 games for Wolves and made a further three appearances from the substitutes bench, and he scored two goals.
Since joining Brighton he hasn't missed a game, appearing in all 11 games played since he signed for his former Brentford boss Steve Coppell and now he will continue playing in the four vital games that remain for Brighton to avoid relegation, although there is a 24 hour recall clause written into the deal.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after yesterday's match: "I'm trying to be as positive as I possibly can.
"Coming here and getting a point, well I suppose we've got to be pleased with that.
"I probably would have taken a point before kick-off but after having gone two goals up and having dominated the game for the first half-hour, I'm disappointed we didn't take all three.
"For the first half-hour, I thought we played some magnificent football, really took the game to them and had Forest on the back foot.
"I'm not even sure what shape we played because we seemed to have 13 or 14 players on the park at times.
"But then I think we switched off for the 10 minutes before half-time, people stopped doing the disciplined jobs they had been doing until that point, and when you look back at both the Forest goals you'll see they were the result of an accumulation of errors.
"Trying to be as neutral as I can, I think it was a tremendous advertisement for the First Division because both sides played some high quality football."
Jones also revealed right-back Denis Irwin had fallen victim to a hip or groin injury.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones felt Nathan Blake's match-winning strike at Grimsby made amends for his sending-off against Rotherham at the weekend.
Blake's first-half strike brought Wolves a valuable 1-0 win and three points which moved them up to fifth in the table, above Reading on goal difference.
But it left Grimsby anchored in the bottom two and with a mountain to climb to avoid the drop to Division Two.
Jones said: "He owed us one after Saturday when he was sent off. He has repaid us tonight.
"It was a good three points for us. We could have made life a bit easier by putting away our chances because at 1-0 Grimsby still had hope, but Matt Murray has not had a save to make and the back five were superb."

Sir Jack Honoured

Wolves chairman Sir Jack Hayward is to be given the Freedom of the City, but not Wolverhampton instead the City of Bristol. A ceremony to confer the honour will be made in Bristol on 8th May.
He is to receive it in recognition of his support for two major projects in the West Country city. The first, back in the late 60s, was the restoration of SS Great Britain, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel to be the world’s largest iron steam ship, and more recently the building of the British Empire and Commonwealth Museum. They have both have become major tourist attractions in Bristol.
Sir Jack told the Official site WOW: “I’m absolutely thrilled,” he said. “It’s a real honour. I couldn’t be more delighted.”

7th April 2003

Team News

Grimsby: have no fresh injury or suspension worries and player-boss Paul Groves is expected to name the same squad that were beaten 2-0 defeat at Leicester City on Saturday.

Wolves: midfielder Paul Ince and striker Kenny Miller are both expected to be fit. They were both substituted in Saturday's goalless draw with calf and groin injuries respectively, but are reported to be responding well to treatment.

No Appeal Against Red Card

Wolves striker Nathan Blake is to serve a suspension because there is no video evidence to support an appeal from Wolves. Blake protested his innocence after he was sent off for violent conduct during the 0-0 draw against Rotherham after a 15th-minute clash with Millers defender Shaun Barker, so the club prepared to launch an appeal but cameras failed to record the incident.
The 31-year-old striker will now receive a three-match ban which would rule him out of matches against Millwall, Norwich and Sheffield United.

6th April 2003

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones and his Rotherham counterpart Ronnie Moore both backed their players after the flashpoint incident which Nathan Blake sent off during the goalless draw at Molineux.
The home crowd were furious when the Welsh international was red-carded for a 15th-minute tangle with stand-in central defender Shaun Barker.
Birmingham referee Andy Hall gestured that Blake had been guilty of an elbowing offence - but made a denial to his manager afterwards.
"Nathan says he grappled their lad to the ground, the referee said he elbowed him and their player reckoned it was a punch," Jones said.
"They can't all be right, so we will see. But I will back my player if he says he didn't punch or elbow the lad.
"If the referee says there was an elbow and then he sees that that is not the case, he might have to change it and Nathan may not be suspended. That's all we can say at the moment."
Moore was happy to believe a different sequence of events. "I thought the referee was spot-on with that decision.
"Shaun Barker is not a liar and says he has been hit in the mouth, although he doesn't know whether it was an elbow or a fist. Clearly, the referee has seen something as well."
Jones added "The lads ran themselves into the ground and played some super football. We took the game to them and limited them to two chances.
"I can't fault anybody today. They were all prepared to put an extra shift in.
"It was unfortunate Colin Cameron missed the penalty. He was the confident one and wanted to take it. That was the only thing he did wrong."

Kids Draw

Wolves under 19s drew 1-1 in their game with Birmingham City at the weekend. Wolves took the lead in the 24th minute, Lewis Gobern made a good run down the right-wing then beat a defender and crossed to Matthew Watson who stabbed the ball home from eight-yards. Birmingham equalised midway through the second-half when the Wolves defence failed to cut out a looping cross and one of their strikers headed in from near the penalty spot.
