Ince And Irwin

Wolves boss Dave Jones thinks Denis Irwin and Paul Ince could still have a future at Molineux. They have both hinted that they could decide to retire but are on holiday deciding.
Dave Jones said on WOW:“We brought Paul and Denis in for a quick fix but I think they both have legs to go again.
“Maybe not playing in every game. They have found it very demanding given the number of games you have to play in the Nationwide League is a short space of time. But in the Premier League you get more breaks and don’t have to play so many matches.
“They are both very competitive players and have enjoyed the challenge of being here this season.
“They will have to make a decision quickly because we are only going to have four or five weeks off. The down side of going up via the play-offs is that we have a shorter break.
“Only they know whether their bodies can take the strains of competing again at the highest level.”

Players Linked With Wolves

Players are already being linked with a move to Molineux following Wolves promotion. Newcastle striker Carl Cort is allegedly one of Wolves top summer targets.
Molineux boss Dave Jones tried to sign Cort on loan last year and is ready to make a cash bid for the injury-jinxed 25-year-old in the next few weeks.
Teddy Sheringham has also been mentioned as being on Dave Jones shopping list, the 37 year old is available on a free transfer.
The first player Wolves are being linked to sign is Sheffield United defender Rob Kozluk, he is also on a free transfer and could go straight in for Denis Irwin if he retires.

Dave Jones has still got to sit down with Sir Jack to find out how much is in the transfer kitty. Wolves have to pay Sunderland £350,000 because of clauses in Alex Rae and Paul Butlers contract about Wolves getting promotion.

3 Players To Have Operations

Goalkeeper Matt Murray had a hernia operation yesterday and is due to be discharged from a Manchester clinic following his successful operation yesterday afternoon. Kenny Miller has been suffering from a hernia for several weeks and he will have surgery to cure the condition immediately after Scotland’s Euro 2004 qualifier against Germany which takes place at Hampden Park on Saturday, 7th June.
George Ndah might also need surgery on his swollen knee that kept him out of the play-offs, he will be seeing a specialist on Thursday to try and establish exactly what the problem is.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "When you see the support we've got it's magnificent. We were superb attacking-wise in the first half and in the second half it was all about defending. I just wish I could've worn a kit and played in it, that was the only thing that was missing.

Wolves owner Sir Jack Hayward said: "It's a dream come true. I was nervous all week, not just during the game, but this is fantastic. It's a great day and a proud moment.
"It was a terrific performance. We played as well as we played against Newcastle (in the FA Cup) and it was wonderful."

Goalscorer Nathan Blake said: "They had a lot of the ball and we tried to hit them on the counter-attack.There's a lot of pace in our side and a lot of strength and that worked to our
advantage.
"I've been to the Premiership twice already but it's nice to be there  once again. It's just a nice feeling to succeed, and I have to say a big mention to Matt Murray - he was out of this world, what a keeper!

Keeper and Man Of The Match Matt Murray said: "The whole season has been like a dream to me. The only way the season could have got better was promotion and we all worked hard and stuck together and we've got it."

Captain Paul Ince said: "I'm pleased for the lads who need to be in Premiership. I'm going to go away and think about what to do next year. I'll be 36 next season and I'll have a chat with the wife (about playing on) but the legs were going in the last 10 minutes. But let's just enjoy the moment."

Goalscorer Mark Kennedy said: "That goal was nice. It (promotion) has been a long time coming for the club. We have all worked hard.
"It's harsh on Sheffield but I am sure they will bounce back.
"We have some big-game players here. We have talent and ability and we were always confident. We were lucky to get three before half-time. We just wanted to shut up shop after that.
"The hard part is staying up. I'm sure the manager will have a few quid to spend."

Team News

Sheffield United: boss Neil Warnock must decide between Stuart McCall and Mark Rankine for the Division One play-off final with Wolves.
Veteran midfielder McCall missed the semi-final second leg win over Reading, but has recovered from the ankle knock and is pressing to reclaim his place.
Rankine moved on loan to Bramall Lane as cover for the Scot and took his place in the thrilling extra-time win over Nottingham Forest.
Warnock's other dilemma comes in attack where Carl Asaba seems the only certain starter. Dean Windass started the semi-finals alongside him, although both Steve Kabba and Paul Peschisolido had a huge impact against Forest.
Kabba, who has been offered international football with Sierra Leone, and Windass have both been struggling with knocks, but Warnock has declared them both fit - along with McCall.
Windass is the favourite to partner Asaba, with Kabba and Peschisolido certain to figure from the bench at some stage on Monday.

Wolves: are sweating on the fitness of striker George Ndah ahead of Monday's final.
The former Swindon striker is Dave Jones' only concern after being ruled out of training all week with a knee injury picked up in the first leg of the semi-final win over Reading.
Ndah has been to see a specialist, but physio Barry Holmes expects him to train on the Saturday and be ready for Monday's massive showdown.
"We have explored all options to try and help George be fit for Monday's game and we will continue with the current regime of treatment and rest up until the weekend," he said.
"George is due to return to training on Saturday and we will then closely monitor his condition to make sure there is no reaction."
If Ndah does not make it Nathan Blake will continue alongside Kenny Miller in attack, with Jones expected to name a full-strength line up behind them.
Paul Butler is expected to shake off a knock and line up alongside Joleon Lescott in central defence, while Alex Rae is likely to stay on the bench despite his semi-final second leg winner at the Madejski Stadium.

Big Match Update

Travel: The Football League are urging supporters to begin their journey early for the First and Second Division play-off finals, after hundreds of Lincoln fans missed the start of their clash with Bournemouth at the Millennium Stadium today.
Heavy traffic on the M4 motorway into Cardiff meant coachloads of travelling Lincoln fans were still queuing to get into the stadium after the game kicked off at 3pm.
Football League spokesman John Nagle said: "We are urging fans to travel early, particularly those who are coming for the Division One final.
"Some Lincoln fans experienced difficulty on the roads and we want to make sure we avoid similar problems."
There will be over 100 coaches leaving Molineux at 8am Monday morning, and Wolves have asked all fans to be early.

Tickets: Wolves Chief Executive Jez Moxey has hit out at the black market traders who are exploiting fans desperate for tickets to Monday’s play-off final.
He said on WOW: "If we can prove that any of our season ticket holders, members or website users are engaged in this profiteering we will immediately ban them from Molineux for life.
"There will be no appeal.
"There are lots of fans heartbroken that they did not get a ticket and it’s appalling to think some of those who have been lucky enough to get a seat are taking advantage of fellow supporters’ passion for Wolves."

Auction website eBay has already banned the sale of tickets and removed all auctions that were selling tickets, some where going for around £250.

No National Anthem

God save the Queen will not be played at the play-off finals, in it's place club songs will be played. This is because Cardiff requested to have the Welsh national anthem played for their match, the FA wouldn't allow this but said as they wouldn't play the Welsh one they wouldn't play the English one either.

Fans Want Molineux Beamback

Disappointed Wolves fans who didn't manage to get a ticket are contacting Wolves officials asking for a large screen at Molineux for the Play-off Final on Monday. The club does sometimes do this for matches and this being one of the most important matches in recent history will probably offer it to fans. But to make sure please phone, call in or send a pigeon to Molineux and make sure they show the match there live.

21st May 2003

Ticket Announcement

Issued by the Wolves Press Office Wednesday May 21, 11.30am on WOW.
Approximately 5500 tickets for Monday’s play-off final against Sheffield United are being made available to the general public but will only go on sale at the ticket office from 10am tomorrow (Thursday).

However, as the queue outside Molineux already exceeds the allocation, the club has made some revisions to its sales plan.

Supporters currently in the line will shortly be issued with vouchers that guarantee them the right to purchase two seats. Those who have queued longest will be allowed to purchase their tickets from 10am tomorrow, giving them some priority in the choice of seats available.
Others will be able to purchase their tickets on Friday.
The majority of the 5500 seats are priced at either £36 or £26 (concessions £18 and £13 respectively).

Anyone now attempting to join the queue is being advised that they will not be successful. No telephone bookings are being accepted. Unfortunately, therefore, there is no point in further supporters coming to Molineux.

No tickets can be sold today as staff are concentrating on processing the 28,000 tickets that have already been sold – some of which still need to be posted out. The approximate breakdown of these seats is as follows: 24,000 sold to season ticket holders and members, and 4,000 sold to other key stake holders such as sponsors and corporate supporters who have been given similar purchasing rights to season ticket holders.

The sales times are as follows: Supporters issued with vouchers numbered one to 1375 can purchase from 10am tomorrow until Friday at 5pm.
Supporters issued with vouchers numbered from 1376 to 2750 can purchase between 9am and 5pm on Friday only.
Anyone with these voucher numbers arriving before this time will not be served.
The ticket office will close at 5pm on both days. Supporters are advised that neither vouchers nor tickets can be replaced if lost or stolen.

Ticket Queue

*Update* There is now no time set for the announcement, could be anytime today. Heard someone say there could be 6,000 queuing outside Molineux now and the Police have turned up in riot vans.

The queue for tickets has already grown to over 100 fans, even thought they are not sure when Wolves are going to make them available to general public. Wolves are expected to make an announcement today.

Clyde Recovering

Wolves young defender  Mark Clyde is confident of a quick return to full fitness after  suffering a knee injury in late April, but has already been ruled out of the Division One play-off final.

Clyde said: "It's been three weeks since I suffered the injury and it's starting to come along.
"I hope to be doing some running this week and then maybe push on to do some football work fairly soon."
"It's quite funny when I look back at it now, I was just running upstairs when I felt the left knee give way.
"I phoned the physio straight away, he told me to come in and unfortunately it turned out to be pretty bad."

Big Match Update

Ticket Update: Wolves fans have begun camping outside Molineux tonight, ready for when the club starts selling tickets to the general public. Tickets are only available to season ticket holders and member at the moment, and the club have not announced when they are going on sale to general public, but with the cut-off date being he 20th May for season ticket holders and members the fans have started the queue already.

Injury Update: Wolves striker George Ndah is hoping to be fit for Bank Holdiay Monday’s big play-off final. He was forced to sit out Wolves second leg victory over Reading in the play-off semi-final second leg after picking up a knee injury during the first leg.

Cedric Who?!

Wolves forgotten striker Cedric Roussel has launched an attack on Wolves for hampering his attempts to move away from Molineux, because he believes the asking price by Wolves will ward off potential buyers.
The former Coventry City striker has been on loan all season with Belgian side RAEC Mons after he fell down the pecking order at Molineux, but he still has two years to run on his contract.
Roussel said: "Wolves want 3m euros (£2m) for me. That's too much for Mons. I don't know where I'll be playing next season. I don't really want to go back to Wolves.
"I don't want to have anything to do with Dave Jones anymore. He wanted to get rid of me. Why would he now change his mind?
"If nobody wants to buy me, I'll respect my contract with Wolves. But I hope that won't be necessary."

17th May 2003

Ticket Update

Wolves had already sold around 13,000 tickets by close of business last night after more than 6,000 were snapped up in the first eight hours of business.
But they are telling supporters not to panic, the tickets will go on sale to the general public and they will make an announcement. They are holding back on doing this so season ticket holders don't panic about not getting their ticket before Tuesday's cut-off date.

Match Reaction

Dave Jones insists he has no preference for Sheffield United or Nottingham Forest as Wolves' opposition when Wanderers bid to crack their play-off curse in Cardiff a week on Monday.
The men from Molineux are into the Division One final after a 1-0 semi-final, second-leg victory against Reading at the Madejski Stadium clinched a 3-1 aggregate success.
The Blades and Forest, with the scores tied at 1-1 from the first encounter, go head-to-head at Bramall Lane for the right to occupy the opposing dressing room at the Millennium Stadium.
And Jones, whose club have blown no fewer than three play-offs campaigns, claims he does not care whether his side face Neil Warnock's side or Paul Hart's team.

Asked about their misery in previous play-offs, Jones said: "Don't burden me with the history of this club because what previous managers have done is nothing to do with me. Every club is steeped in history.
"I don't know who we fancy. It's a tough game tomorrow and whoever gets there deserves to be there.
"I honestly don't think it matters who you play because if you are going to go up, you have to get results."

Jones also revealed how he plans to relax.
"I just want to get on the bus and have a beer," he said. "We will get ourselves home, have a few days' rest and prepare for whoever we will play.
"Alex (Rae) hadn't played the last few games so I'm really pleased for him to score - and it will make it easier for me when I play golf with him."

Rae struck with eight minutes remaining of a cracking contest at the Madejski Stadium, packed to the rafters with a crowd of 24,060, a new record figure for the ground.

But the real hero of the night was Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray.
The 22-year-old made two magnificent reaction saves from Darius Henderson, the first from a downward header and the second from an angled shot.

Jones added: "We are used to pressure so we were relishing the game. I told my players to embrace the atmosphere rather than fear it.
"We did that and every man wearing a gold shirt did their job.
"We knew we would be in a battle and we showed a lot of bottle and a lot of nerve to handle the atmosphere.
"They swarmed all over us but we defended well and our keeper made good saves.
"We had been trying to play on the counter-attack - but just when I decided to shut up shop, up popped Alex and that knocked the stuffing right out of them." From www.sportinglife.com

Team News

Match preview from www.skysports.com:

Reading striker Nicky Forster admits he will find it difficult to watch from the stands after being ruled out of the Division One play-off clash with Wolves.
Forster suffered an ankle injury during the semi-final first leg and will not recover in time for the return leg as the Royals look to overturn a 2-1 deficit.
"I'm gutted to be honest," admitted Forster. "There's so much to play for in this game.
"I knew straight away when I went over that it was a bad one. Jon Fearn (physio) came over and asked me to stand on it but I knew I'd done it badly and pretty quickly he knew as well."
"I'm sure it's a bigger blow for me personally than it is for the team because we've got the squad to cope," he told the Berkshire club's website.

The loss of Forster - who has netted 10 goals since the middle of February - means Jamie Cureton is expected to start up front, although Darius Henderson and Martin Butler are also pushing for a starting role.
The Royals are at least boosted by the news that on-loan Burnley winger Glen Little is back in contention after recovering from illness.
Steve Brown is expected to feature despite breaking his nose in the first leg but Nathan Tyson is suspended following his sending off.

Dave Jones claims his Wolves players are "a pain in the backside" - but it has been the secret of their success.
He said: "Why be so blinkered as to believe what you do is always right?
"The input from a lot of the players has been invaluable to us as a football club because they're the ones out there running around and if there's a problem or something you've not seen then there's no harm in somebody passing an opinion.
"I think you have to be quite open and I've done that throughout my career as a manager.
"This is my third club as a manager, I've been a manager six or seven years, and I think you've got to listen to what players have to say.
"That's good and I'd rather be dealing with those sorts of people than people who just go with the flow and don't do anything. All of my players are like that here and it's a pain in the backside sometimes."

12th May 2003

Injury Update

Wolves are hoping to have a fully fit squad for their play-off second leg at The Madejski Stadium on Wednesday.
Kenny Miller, Shaun Newton and Joleon Lescott all trained at Molineux this morning, but Paul Butler had to sit it out.

Miller was substituted when someone caught his ankle as the players were all congratulating Lee Naylor, he received treatment at the side of the pitch and would have been fine to go back on, but boss Dave Jones wanted to get back to having 11 men on the pitch and decided to bring on Sturridge.

Butler was stretchered off on Saturday with a knee injury and went for an x-ray which showed that there’s no crack. They will now have that x-ray examined in more depth to see what damage has been done, if any, and hope to know more by tomorrow.

Lescott trained without any problems, and Newton is now over his migraine.

11th May 2003

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones has praised his side's mental resilience after they came from behind to secure a 2-1 play-off victory over Reading at Molineux.
The hosts had fallen behind to Nicky Forster's first-half strike before defender Graeme Murty deflected a Shaun Newton shot into his own net 15 minutes from time and defender Lee Naylor stepped up to blast home an 84th-minute free-kick winner.

Jones said: "We were behind in the game so we needed to dig deep and we did that, we showed mental strength.
"In the last 30 minutes we really got a grip on the game but we always felt Reading started at a tempo they wouldn't be able to sustain.
"We knew we were not playing well but even at 1-0 down at half-time we knew if we kept knocking on the door, we would get the result.
"So we showed we were fit and had the mental toughness to do the job and I'm pleased to come away with a win after being 1-0 down.
"But all we've done at this stage is get our noses in front at the halfway stage and that's the way I'm looking at it."

Countdown To The Play-offs

Injury Update: Lee Naylor should be fit for Saturday’s first leg, after suffering a toe injury before the break in last Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City. He received immediate treatment and is now just waiting for the toe to heal.
Joleon Lescott is battling to be fit for Saturday after he was forced out of Sunday’s draw with Leicester because of a knee injury he picked up in training, only the third game he has missed all season. Lescott had a scan on Saturday and boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "It’s a little too early yet to predict whether or not Jo is going to be available to face Reading.
"He’s obviously not training at the moment but is undergoing treatment and hopefully all will be well. We will be monitoring the situation throughout the week."
Mark Clyde is definitely ruled out, he is recovering from surgery to his knee to remove scar tissue.

Ticket Update: Wolves fans camped out all night to get one of the 4,462 tickets that Wolves have been allocated for the second leg at the Madejski Stadium. They are priced at £18 adults and £10 concessions.

Match Reaction

Dave Jones declared his Wolves side ready and eager for the Division One play-offs after they ended their league season with a draw at home to already-promoted Leicester.
The Molineux outfit took their unbeaten run to nine games, although they were disappointed to be denied victory by a late equaliser from the penalty spot by Trevor Benjamin.
With none of the play-off quartet winning, Wolves now face Reading in next Saturday's semi-final first leg and Jones said: "It was just a case of seeing out the day.
"We didn't want anyone seriously injured or sent off but I saw a lot of good signs from my players that they are 'at it'.
"I had a go at them last weekend but I was pleased with the attitude today. We felt last year when we went into the play-offs that we had lost something and we were running on empty.
"This time, once automatic promotion had gone, the play-offs became our secondary aim and we reached them comfortably.
"We have not really wanted to play the last two games but the fans have geared themselves up today and we want Molineux to be a cauldron of noise next weekend."

Player Of The Year

Joleon Lescott was voted the Player of the Year by fans at Molineux, voting slips were given out at the ground, but next season you may be able to vote online.
Lescott picked up the trophy from Sir Jack Hayward after this afternoon’s 1-1 draw with Leicester, which he missed through injury. Goalkeeper Matt Murray was named Young Player of the Year.

Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: “Both lads deserve these accolades.
“Jo has had a very consistent season. He is still only a youngster but regularly puts in very mature performances. He’s been a real asset to the team this season.
“After all the set-backs he’s suffered, Matt has taken his chance well. In a very short time he went from being a reserve team player to establishing himself as the club’s number one keeper.
“The performances of both players have earned them recognition in the England under 21 set up. They’ve had a great season and now it’s up to them to show they can carry on improving.”

Awards were also presented to Paul Ince and Denis Irwin by representatives of the Premier League. Both players were voted into the teams of the decade.

You can still vote for 'The Wolves' Site player of the season on the main page.

They are a doing a Wolves version of Hey Baby, the chart hit by DJ Otzi, and the lyrics to the song, called 'Hey Jonesy', are set to become football stand chants if the team is successful in its Premiership bid this season.

Bully said: "I am only on the backing vocals but I wanted to get behind the song because anything that can help the team do well is worth it.
"Last season I was really confident on how they were playing but I don't want to tempt fate this time by saying they'll go up, I just hope that this song helps," he said.

The lyrics to 'Hey Jonesy':

Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League
Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League

We all know that it's been too long
Since we've been where we belong
But now we know it's our time once more
When we hear that famous Molineux roar

Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League
Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League

The disappointments we've had to take
We have suffered enough heartbreak
Believe us Jonesy this is our year
And now we know and now we know

It's time to repay our loyalty
With trips to Anfield and Highbury
This time Jonesy we know it's our year
when DJ's Gold and Black Army cheer

Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League
Hey Jonesy...We wanna go to the Premier League

The CD, priced £2.99, will be on sale at the BBC shop in the Merry Hill Centre from 3rd May when the foursome will be signing autographs. It is also available through mail order on 01384 572860.

Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "Even at this late stage of the season the pitch still looks good.
"The lads who work on it deserve credit. It’s not only the pitch at the stadium they have to look after but also the ones at the Compton training ground.
"It’s hard work keeping all of them in shape and they have done a great job."
