Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones was relieved his side grabbed their first point of the season at the fourth attempt.
Jones said: "The confidence is starting to come back and we've shown in our last two games that we can compete.
"We had a good go at Pompey and with a bit more luck we would have had all three points. I told them to use Wednesday as a springboard and they did just that.
"We have made progress after our first two games. After two people were writing us off and that was crazy. All I'm asking for is consistency."
Jones refused to make any comment on Redknapp's dismissal but did say: "I thought the referee made some strange decisions."

Three Signings Expected

Before Monday's transfer deadline Wolves boss Dave Jones is confident of bringing three new players to Molineux.
Wolves have been linked with a £2m move for transfer-listed West Brom striker Jason Roberts and Czech goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek is also expected to sign after training with the club for the last few days.
Wolves are also thought to be chasing another defender, with Newcastle's transfer-listed Greek star Nikos Dabizas also linked with a move to Molineux.
Dave Jones said: "I'm hoping to make three signings before the deadline closes."
Jones as usual wouldn't give anything away about his targets and he added: "I am not going to talk about the players I am chasing because I don't want them snatched away from me. But there are three deals on the go - and maybe we can snatch someone from somebody else."

Team News

Wolves: new boy Joey Gudjonsson is set to go straight into Dave Jones' squad for the Molineux clash with Portsmouth.
The former Aston Villa midfielder signed on a season-long loan from Real Betis on Thursday and met his new team-mates for the first time on Friday.
Henri Camara is expected to retain his starting place after an eye-catching debut at Old Trafford, with fellow striker Dean Sturridge still ruled out with a thigh injury.
Shaun Newton (hamstring) and Oleg Luzhny (toe) are doubts, while goalkeeper Matt Murray is still out with a back problem as Wolves seek to end their run of three consecutive Premiership defeats.

Portsmouth: Russia captain Alexei Smertin is expected to make an immediate debut for Portsmouth as they bid for their third win in four games at Wolves.
Smertin, who joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan from Chelsea this week, has been included in the squad after being granted a work permit by the Home Office.
Australian defender Hayden Foxe is available again after missing the last two games with a thigh strain but expected to have to settle for a place on the substitutes bench.
Midfielder Tim Sherwood is still ruled out by an ear infection while defender Matt Taylor and striker Svetoslav Todorov are sidelined by long-term heel and knee injuries.

Transfer News

Wolves have signed Icelandic international Joey Gudjonsson on a one-year loan deal. He spent five months with Aston Villa last season on loan from Spanish club Real Betis.
He said on WOW: "I’m delighted to be back.
"It’s a good challenge for me and I welcome any challenge – I’m looking forward to it.
"I had hoped to be staying on at Villa but, after Graham Taylor left, things were left hanging in the air and nothing happened.
"Now I’ve found a good club to rejoin the Premiership with. The Premier League is the toughest in the world whether you are Wolves, Leicester City or even Manchester United.
"I saw a quality in the team (in the Manchester United game) and I think that we have a good chance of staying up.
"The Premier League suits my style a lot more than the Spanish League. With the situation as it is at Betis, I don’t expect to be going back.
"I played five or six games for them before Christmas and got five yellow cards. In the Premiership you are allowed to go into the challenge a lot more and I like to get stuck in so it suits my style.
"I’m not a nasty tackler but I’m very passionate about winning.
"I lost my head in Villa’s game with Birmingham last season and got sent off – but it was the first red card of my career."

Dave Jones added: "Joey is a good passer and doesn’t give the ball away, and he has a hell of a shot.
"He will bring us something we don’t have in midfield at the moment. It’s taken around four weeks to complete the deal, it was quite intricate, but he’s here now and will join in with training this morning when he can get to know the rest of the squad.
"Provided he gets international clearance, he will be in the squad for tomorrow’s game against Portsmouth."

Wolves are also trying to sign goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek on loan. For the last two years he has been with Brescia in Italian Serie A, he has also played for Newcastle for eight seasons and played for Sheffield Wednesday. The keeper has been training with Wolves for the past week as boss Dave Jones tries to add a third goalkeeper to the squad.

Emerson look's set to join Rangers, Celtic did step in with a bid for him but then lost interest only for their local rivals to put a bid in. he was ready to sign a contract at Molineux, but his club Athletico Madrid hadn't checked the contract which allowed other clubs time to bid for him.

28th August 2003

Celtic Bid For Emerson

Emerson's move to Wolves has hit another snag because Celtic made a surprise bid for him last night.
He passed a medical in Wolverhampton earlier this week, agreed personal terms and was expected to sign, but had to return to Spain to resolve the contract issues that had delayed his proposed move to Molineux.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said on WOW: "Last night we were informed by agents that Celtic had come in with a 11th hour bid. Apparently Celtic's bid matches the terms of our bid exactly.
"Emerson is to meet officials of Athletico Madrid this morning to sign a termination agreement on his existing contract. I guess he will then make a decision as to where he will play his football this season - at Molineux or Parkhead. All we can do now is wait for his decision".

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after the match: "People have chosen to express their opinions when they don't have a clue what is going on inside the club.
"We don't have our leading goalscorer, our main supplier, our goalkeeper and our central defender. Even Manchester United would struggle with an injury-list like that and that is why we have started the season off slowly.
"It's not the Press, it's the ex-players. They seem to know an awful lot from sitting on the other side of the fence given they are only doing the jobs they are because they couldn't do the one I am in.
"Before they open their mouths they should pick up the telephone and speak to me.
"We went to Old Trafford with a game-plan, conceded an early goal, which put us on the back foot, and still then we took the game to them. We can walk away with our heads held high but I would rather have had a scrappy game and drawn 1-1."

Team News

Man Utd: £18million new signings Cristiano Ronaldo and Kleberson could get their starting debuts.
Ronaldo has impressed in two substitute appearances so far, while Kleberson spent Saturday's win over Newcastle watching from the bench.
Nicky Butt (ankle) and Quinton Fortune (thigh) are again ruled out as the defending champions attempt to extend their 100% start to the season.
If Ruud van Nistelrooy scores he will become the first player to score in 11 Premiership games in a row.

Wolves: boss Dave Jones has more injury concerns he will have to check on the fitness of three of his players for the trip to Old Trafford.
Shaun Newton (hamstring), Oleg Luzhny (foot) and Dean Sturridge (thigh) are all doubts while Kevin Cooper needs a scan on the ankle he injured at the weekend.
Michael Oakes will start in goal again with Matt Murray not recovered from his back injury.
Brazilian Emerson has not signed in time after a dispute between Emerson and Atletico Madrid could wreck the Brazilian midfielder's move to Wolves.
The deal now depends on Emerson's agent reaching an agreement with the Spanish club or the transfer will be off.
Mark Kennedy (ankle), Joleon Lescott (knee), Kenny Miller (hernia) and George Ndah (knee) remain on the long-term injury list.

Brazilian Signs

Wolves have announced they have signed 31-year-old Brazilian midfielder Moises Emerson from Athletic Madrid. If he passes a a medical his signing will be completed on Tuesday and he could be included in the squad for Wednesday night’s match at Manchester United if all the paperwork is completed.
Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "He is a quality player who has already worked at Premier League level and his experience will be invaluable to us."

24th August 2003

Match Reaction

Boss Dave Jones admitted he was "very angry and disappointed" after Wolves' first top-flight home game in 19 years turned into a nightmare.
And Jones insisted team spirit was the key to the resurrection of fortunes for a team who have now conceded nine goals in just two Barclaycard Premiership starts after the 4-0 mauling by Charlton.

Jones said: "The players have got to do better and they have got to stick together.
"The frustrating thing for me is that once again we have not done ourselves justice.
"We started bright and sharp and then we've made a dreadful mistake and lost the first goal which killed us."

Jones must now rally his troops for their daunting trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday but is hit by a new injury concern over Kevin Cooper, who was taken to hospital for an X-ray on his ankle.
Cooper was taken off after a 70th minute clash with Scott Parker which drew a red card for the Charlton man.
But neither Cooper nor his boss Jones thought Parker's red card was merited and indicated they would help in any appeals process.

Jones said: "I don't think it was a sending-off and I think the boy has been very unlucky. I don't think the intent was there." From sportinglife.com

Team News

Wolves: boss Dave Jones will make a late check on striker Nathan Blake, he has returned from midweek international duty with Wales and Jones is confident he is fit enough to figure tomorrow.
Wolves only had seven players in training this week due to international commitments, but all the returning players are thought to be fit with only Mark Kennedy (ankle), Joleon Lescott (knee), Kenny Miller (hernia) and George Ndah (knee) still out.

Charlton: Loan signing Carlton Cole and former West Ham star Paolo di Canio are competing for starting places.
The Addicks boss is keen to freshen up his attack after Shaun Bartlett and Kevin Lisbie made little impact in the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City last Sunday.
Claus Jensen could start after impressing as a second half substitute against City, while Matt Holland will continue in midfield after the ankle injury he suffered while on international duty cleared up.
Dean Kiely should take over from Simon Royce in goal after serving a one-match suspension.

Charlton Return Tickets

Wolves fans have the chance of extra tickets because Charlton are sending hundreds of tickets back.
They have only sold 900 tickets, meaning that they will be in the flank of the Jack Harris Stand for Saturday's game, instead of the Steve Bull Stand lower tier. That is where Wolves planned to put supporters of visiting Premiership clubs.
It means that Wolves fans with season tickets in the Jack Harris Stand will be re-located to the Steve Bull Stand for Saturday's match.

Kameni Permit Rejected

Wolves attempts to sign goalkeeper Carlos Kameni have failed again, he will be returning home to Le Havre after his work permit appeal was turned down today. He was set to sign for Wolves if the permit could be secured, but had his application rejected at a hearing in Sheffield.
He has applied for a French passport that would give him the right to play in Britain, however, it could take weeks even months to be granted. In the meantime the Cameroon international will have to go back to France.
The reason given for the work permit being rejected was on the grounds that Kameni was not likely to make an immediate impact on the English game.

Injury Update

Striker Kenny Miller is now close to returning to full fitness. The Scottish international underwent hernia surgery during the summer, after finishing top goal scorer in Wolves promotion-winning season.
Boss Dave Jones feels it won't be too long before he will once again be threatening opposition defences.

Defender Joleon Lescott is making progress after surgery to clean up his knees. The England Under-21  will not be returning to action as quick as Miller though.

Striker George Ndah also had surgery on a knee during the summer, but after seeing a specialist he won't be returning to full training for a few weeks.

No Interest In Mills

Wolves have said they did make an enquiry about Leeds and England right back Danny Mills.
But the club say they are no longer interested in Mills and denied that Leeds have approached them to try and offload the 26-year-old.

Mills was left out of Leeds squad for the opening Premiership game of the season on Sunday.
But though the right back was a summer target for manager Dave Jones, Wolves are adamant they will not be making an offer, despite starting the season with a 5-1 defeat to Blackburn.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said: "It is completely untrue that we are going for Danny Mills.
"He has not been offered to us by Leeds. He is someone we spoke about two months ago, but that's as far as it went."

International Update

Wales boss Mark Hughes watched Wolves striker Nathan Blake as he trained with his international team mates in Belgrade this morning, he looks set to return to the Welsh starting line up for their postponed game against Serbia-Montenegro tomorrow night.
The Euro 2004 qualifier would be Blake’s first start for Wales in two years. An injury to Celtic’s John Hartson means that the Wolves striker is likely to lead the welsh attack.

New signing Isaac Okoronkwo has pulled out of Nigeria's trip to Japan to concentrate on his career at Wolves.
The 25-year-old defender said: "I am not going to Japan because I am not settled.
"It is the start of the league season and I don't want to go on a long journey. As far as I am concerned I need to play as many games as possible for Wolves."

Okoronkwo has stressed he will be available for Nigeria's important games but he feels they can manage without him for the remainder of their fixtures.

"I have a lot to do Molineux at the moment," he added. "This is my first time in England and in the Premiership and everything is still very new.
"But I am determined to do all I can to help Wolves."

Wolves Issue Apology

Wolves have apologised to fans after telephone lines failed just as tickets for the away fixture at Manchester United went on sale on Sunday evening.
They explained on WOW: The tickets were scheduled to be available at 6pm on Sunday evening but, within ten minutes, staff realised there was a problem. The 0870 number provider was immediately contacted and they quickly confirmed that all was clear at their end. Then a call was put into Telewest Communications who did a thorough external check after dispatching engineers to the exchange but no faults could be found. The engineers then arrived at Molineux and a fault was discovered in the system at the stadium. After two hours work, by 11.20pm, they felt that the problem had been rectified. Once again, the club apologises for any inconvenience and thanks fans for their patience. Supporters are advised that Manchester United tickets are on sale this morning through 0870 4420123 and not the old ticket office number of 653653.

"We can't lose heart after losing the opening game. We have to learn and react to this defeat."

"All the new boys did well. Henri had good first touches. Maris has shown he has something. I’ve heard people say he is the new Pahars but he’s not – he’s got something of his own.
"We’ll have another look at him over the next couple of days and then we’ll have to make a decision. We haven’t discussed how much he would cost.

Andrews Loaned Out

Wolves young midfielder Keith Andrews has gone on a three-month loan to Stoke City.
He has spent the summer in rehab and has featured in four of Wolves pre-season games, he will be available for Stoke's opening game at Derby on Saturday.
Chief executive Jez Moxey stressed on the official site that the move was only a loan and that there were no plans to make the move permanent.
He said: "Keith missed a large part of last season through injury and the move to Stoke should give him the opportunity to get some much needed match practise at first team level under his belt.
"But the move is just a loan and we hope that it will prove as big a benefit to him as when he went out to Oxford shortly before he made the breakthrough into the first team here."

Scouting Mission

Dave Jones and Jez Moxey returned to Molineux this morning after a scouting mission to Sweden. The Wolves chief executive, who accompanied his manager and chief scout to the Djurgarden versus Partizan Belgrade Champions League qualifier last night in Stockholm, was eager to stress that 20-year-old international midfielder Kim Kallstrom - who plays for the Stockholm club - was not the focus of the trip.
Jez said on WOW: "Despite what might have been said in certain newspaper reports, we didn’t travel to specifically to watch Kallstrom,"
"There was more than one player that the manager wanted to see play.
"The trip was part and parcel of our strategy to widen the scouting network and to gather good intelligence on various players. There will be similar trips made during the course of the season."

Work has started at Molineux to fill in one corner of the stadium between the Billy Wright Stand and the Jack Harris Stand with temporary seating. 870 temporary seats are being put in for the anticipated extra crowds in time for Wolves first home Premiership match against Charlton on August 23rd.

Reserves Win Friendly

Wolves reserves won 3-2 in their friendly with Worcester City at St George’s Lane thanks to an early Hat-trick from Jimmi Lee Jones.
His and Wolves first came in the fifth minute, Andrews short pass picked out JJ Melligan he then drove the ball hard and low towards the far post where Jones was waiting to tuck the ball over the line from a couple of yards out.
Three minutes later a superb ball from Andrews put Jones in the clear to the left of the City goal. The youngster turned before confidently sending a fierce shot into the roof of the opposite corner of the net.
Jones completed his hat-trick after a mistake by Worcester’s Allan Davies allowed Melligan to square the ball leaving the striker with the easiest of tasks in converting.

Boss Offered New Deal

Wolves boss Dave Jones is set to sign a three-year contract at Molineux, he has 12 months of his current three-year deal left and was promised a new contract by Sir Jack after Wolves won promotion into the Premiership in May. Since then negotiations have been ongoing between Jones's agent Jonathon Barnett and chief executive Jez Moxey.

Jones said: "I would think the club will announce something in the next few days.
"There's no problems, it just a question of signing now.
"Ideally I would love to stay for five, 10 years. It all depends on what the club wants. If they are prepared to be patient and invest wisely, we could be challenging for the top honours within five years, but it requires patience and understanding.
"Maybe the board's decision to stick with me last December when things weren't going well was the right one after all."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW after yesterday's friendly: “When you look at what we’ve got back home – Kennedy, Miller, Lescott etc - they are going to be the bulk of my squad.
“Pre-season games are about getting the players fit. I remember having a great pre-season once at Stockport then we went on to play seven league games without a win. You can't read too much into results.
“We are a week behind Coventry in terms of fitness levels but we are getting there and I expect the players to get sharper and sharper as we get close to the start. There were times today when we didn’t look sharp but you would expect that at this stage.
“I think Jody (Craddock) and Silas showed what they are all about today. And the trialist (Maris Verpakovskis) did OK. We’ll have another look at him. Issac (Okeronkwo) will play on Monday.
“We should have scored more goals and should have been tightened up more but these games are part of a learning curve.
“Steffen Iversen will be in working tomorrow and we will be looking to get him as fit as we can for the start of the season but he’s not ready to play at Worcester on Monday.”
