Reserves Draw

Wolves reserves drew 3-3 with Leeds reserves thanks to a late Dean Sturridge penalty.
Wolves had an early shock when they fell behind after just 21 seconds. Cyril Chapuis picked the ball up on the right and cut inside before hitting a rising drive past Carl Ikeme from 20-yards.
Kachloul levelled the score in the 17th minute, Jimmi Lee Jones found Silas on edge of the Leeds box and from the Portuguese midfielder’s square ball, Kachloul ran in to pick his spot.
Wolves took the lead after 24 minutes, Kachloul took a free-kick on the right of the Leeds area and Ivar Ingimarssen powered in a header that was brilliantly turned aside by Scott Carson. But the ball fell invitingly into the path of Silas who ran in to force it home from close range.
But four minutes before half-time Leeds were back level thanks to a terrific strike from Michael Bridges.
In the 72nd minute, a mistake by Clingan led to Leeds taking the lead again, his back pass fell well short and although Ikeme managed to deflect the ball away from Chapuis, it fell to Barmby who just rolled it into the empty net.
Wolves got a deserved equaliser three minutes from the end, Carson had felled Sturridge as he ran into the Leeds area. Sturridge, with one of his stop-start run-ups, easily beat the keeper.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones could not hide his frustration tonight after they were denied their first win of the season.
Kevin Davies took advantage of some naive play to secure a point for Bolton five minutes from the end.
Although Jones refused to name the player responsible for the crucial error, Lee Naylor was the obvious target.
He delivered the ball to the Bolton bench, then turned his back on Emerton Thome as he took a throw-in.
It found substitute Glen Little, who picked out Davies in the box and he drew the sides level at 1-1.

Jones said: "One lapse of concentration has cost all all three points.
"The first time they have got round the back of us they've got a goal.
"If you give the ball back to someone to take a throw in and then turn your back you're going to give away lots of room.
"He should have put it next to my missus in row Z. She would have kept hold of it longer than we did.
"Without naming the person, you have just got to stand up and take it. The sad thing he has done really well.
"They are still peeling him off the walls in the dressing room. But you cannot switch off at this level and he has learned a harsh lesson."

Wolves were in sight of their first win in seven league games thanks to a 30-yard thunderbolt from Alex Rae before Davies made his mark.

Jones said: "We had them on the back foot and the crowd started to turn a bit.
"We played good football for an hour and it was a great strike by Alex.
"It gave us a little injection of confidence and you could see us growing as the game wore on.
"It is long time since we have been in a winning position. Last year, though, we wouldn't have let that go."

Team News

Bolton: Boss Sam Allardyce is likely to name an unchanged starting line-up to the team which drew at Newcastle last Saturday, recalling Jussi Jaaskelainen, Emerson Thome, Ivan Campo, Stelios Giannakopoulos, Youri Djorkaeff, Kevin Davies and Ricardo Gardner after they were rested for the midweek Carling Cup victory over Walsall.

Wolves: striker Kenny Miller is poised to make his first appearance of the season. Miller, 24-goal leading scorer when Wolves won promotion last season, has been sidelined since June following hernia surgery.
Captain Paul Ince and full-back Denis Irwin will return after sitting out the midweek Carling Cup success against Darlington.

Shock Announcement

Sir Jack Hayward has announced he is to end his 13-year chairmanship of Wolves and hand over control of the club for free.
The 80-year-old said at a business dinner at Molineux that the time had come to relinquish his 100% stock holding - subject to a number of strict criteria.
He said he would not be seeking to recoup a penny of the £40million owed to him by the club which he bought for £1.9million in 1990.
Hayward, who received the Freedom of the City in Wolverhampton on Friday, intends to stay on, possibly in a presidential capacity.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "Sir Jack is beginning to feel that he has done his bit for the club.
"He has toiled with this club for 18 years and what he would like to do is just turn up as a fan which is what we all know he is at heart."

Hayward's decision is not expected to adversely affect Wolves' chances of Barclaycard Premiership survival, nor of new purchases should the need arise in January.
The Bahamas-based businessman is in no hurry to leave and will carefully vet potential successors.

Moxey added: "Sir Jack wants to talk to anyone with a genuine desire, and pretty deep pockets I might add, to take the club on and improve it.
"For the club to have its expectations met, we require somebody with pretty deep pockets.
"That is the cost of involvement if you like - that they must be able to convince Sir Jack they have the means and the desire to advance this club and keep it as a Premiership force.
"Ideally for Sir Jack, people from Wolverhampton will put together a consortium to pick up the reins and take the club on."

Among Hayward's strict stipulations will be that the successful businessman or consortium signs a legally-binding document ensuring 25% of the club's ownership passes into the hands of the fans.
Hayward's announcement marks his first public declaration of intent to pass the club over. He had told club officials last season that he would leave if they were not promoted to the Premiership.

Pinto Leaves

Trialist Joao Manuel Pinto has left Molineux after spending just two days training at Molineux.
He is now on trial at Bolton Wanderers, who Wolves play on saturday. The 30-year-old defender parted company with Benfica, where he has spent the past three seasons, after reportedly falling out with the club's coach.
Manager Dave Jones said on WOW: "Joao has been with us for a couple of days this week and we’ve had a good look at him but after consideration we decided to let him go.
"We weren’t happy with the player's fitness and I understand he’s now gone on similar terms to Bolton."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones was relieved after his side registered their first win of the season over Darlington on Tuesday night.
Jones claimed the 2-0 Carling Cup victory would help restore some confidence following Saturday's Molineux drubbing by Chelsea.
But he warned against getting carried away with his side's performance against the Third Division strugglers.

Jones said: "Confidence was at a low ebb and I'm glad wve got some of it back.
"It was a low-risk win. We haven't really gambled on anything but we have been able to give most of our players a run-out.
"I don't think tonight will make much difference. We know we're going to go back into a completely different match of Premiership standard.
"The important thing was to get a win. There were some good performances and people have got to stay strong and be brave."

But Jones admitted he was concerned with his side's mounting injury problems after goalkeeper Matt Murray and winger Mark Kennedy were both substituted.
Murray suffered a recurrence of his back problem and is a doubt for Saturday, while Kennedy felt weak on the ankle which ruled him out at the start of the season.

Jones added: "I was always going to make changes but I had 10 players in the treatment room and the only players I rested were Paul Ince and Denis Irwin.
"The new players I brought in did enough because they knew there was pressure on them to win the game."

Pinto Training With Wolves

Portugal defender Joao Manuel Pinto is training with Wolves as they look to bolster their squad.
The 30-year-old has left Benfica and is available to sign for Wolves despite the closure of the transfer window because he is currently without a club.
Wolves boss Dave Jones told WOW: "Joao is out of contract, and his agent contacted us. So we invited him over and we will be having a good look at him over the next few days."

22nd September 2003

Team News

Wolves: boss Dave Jones has indicated he will make changes to his team for the Carling Cup match, with captain Paul Ince and fellow veteran Denis Irwin prime candidates to be rested.
Summer signings Oleg Luzhny and Isaac Okoronkwo can both expect to make their first starts and Portuguese midfielder Silas may earn a recall.
But Hassan Kachloul is still touch and go after struggling to shake off the groin injury which prevented him making his debut against Claudio Ranieri's men.
Striker Nathan Blake is a major doubt with a hamstring strain and goalkeeper Matt Murray is still expected to sit out with a back strain.

Darlington: winger Neil Wainwright has been ruled out with an ankle injury, although X-rays have revealed there are no broken bones.
Gary Pearson is available after serving a one-match suspension. The defender can play in the Quakers' next two matches but must then sit out a four-game ban for his second red card of the season against York.
Mick Tait admits his side are "massive underdogs" for the Molineux clash, but added: "We'll go out there and give it our best shot."

Match Reaction

Dave Jones said: "Lot’s of people have already written us off so let’s just say ‘sod it’ and give it a go - and if we prove them wrong then fantastic.
"Never in my life have I ever given up a fight and I won’t start now. This club has waited too long to get here to just throw in the towel. I won’t give up and if any of my players look like they will then I’ll show them the door.
"Are we going to roll over and die or are we going to fight? I say fight!
"The players are low but no one is going to help pick us up. We’ve got to do that for ourselves. It’s down to hard graft boys."

"I feel angry," he added. "It’s too easy to just say they were better than us. We allowed them to play. We allowed them to be at their best and we didn’t disrupt their rhythm. Our quality of ball into Steffen Iversen wasn’t good enough.
"The players have got to stop looking for others to help them out. They’ve got to get on with their own jobs. Man for man we didn’t do our jobs today."

Wolves captain Paul Ince said: "I'm not used to losing games like that, but the fact that so many heads went down made me even more angry.
"I don't care who it is we're playing - it doesn't matter who comes to Molineux or how much money they've spent. No team should come here and be allowed to beat us 5-0.
"Some people just gave up far too quickly and I won't have that in my team. We always knew it wouldn't be easy - but we should still be in there battling and kicking for every ball."

Team News

Boss Dave Jones hopes to have increased options, with Mark Kennedy making his long-awaited comeback at Southampton last week, and Hassan Kachloul expected to shrug off a groin strain.
Kachloul is still waiting to make his Wolves debut since his deadline-day move from Aston Villa.

Henri Camara could also be back in contention after missing out last week while Oleg Luzhny and Isaac Okoronkwo will be pushing for places.
Nigerian Okoronkwo has struggled to adapt to the British game in the reserves so far but believes he is ready for his Premiership bow.

17th September 2003

Assistant Update

Wolves boss Dave Jones has distanced himself from speculation that he is to appoint England Under-19 coach Stuart Baxter as his right-hand man, instead Jones will wait until his first choice Brian Kidd becomes available.
Kidd is still being paid by Leeds United after being sacked by the Elland Road club in May and is anxious not to lose out on compensation.

Jones has been without an assistant since the dismissal of John Ward in May, but isn't blaming the club's poor start in the Premiership to the heavy workload falling exclusively on his shoulders.

The Wolves' boss said: "It's absolute nonsense to say our poor start is down to us not having an assistant.
"It's more down to lack of bodies than to do with the absence of a coach.
"The biggest factor has been the absence of our top goalscorer, our goalkeeper, our Player of the Year and our chief provider.
"They are big, big players for us and they are the reasons why we are where we are.
"But I do anticipate there will be a decision on the appointment of a coach soon."

FA Enquiry Update

Wolves manager Dave Jones has been asked by the FA why he described referee Uriah Rennie as "useless" after Wolves 2-0 defeat at Southampton, during which Southampton were awarded a penalty but Wolves were denied one.

Now the FA has written to the Wolves boss for his observations and Jones has 14 days to respond to the FA, who will then decide whether any further action is appropriate.
The FA has to distinguish between criticism of a referee and the more serious offence of questioning his integrity.

Jones attacked Rennie after he refused Wolves a penalty when James Beattie felled Jody Craddock - but had given Saints a spot-kick when Denis Irwin tackled Kevin Phillips.

16th September 2003

Boss's Comments Being Considered

Wolves boss Dave Jones could be in trouble with the FA after he said referee Uriah Rennie was "useless" in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Southampton.
He was angry about a decision from Rennie when he awarded Southampton a penalty after what Jones felt was a blatant dive by striker Kevin Phillips.
Sources inside Molineux say Jones - if he is summoned before the Football Association - will produce video evidence of Rennie's blunder to back up his case.

Jones was further infuriated by Rennie when the official failed to award Wolves a spot-kick of their own when Jody Craddock was hauled back by James Beattie in the area.

An FA spokesman said: "We are currently considering Dave Jones' comments."
After the match Jones said: "I have to be careful what I say but the referee was useless.
"This game seemed to be all about making Uriah Rennie look good.
"The penalty was fair enough because Denis [Irwin] said he slightly caught him.
"But if he gives that as a penalty, he has to give the one when Beattie wrestled down Jody in their box. That wasn't given.
"And how the referee ended up with eight bookings I just don't know. I couldn't make sense of a lot of his decisions."

Reserves Lose

Wolves reserves lost 1-0 to Newcastle reserves at Kingston Park, the home of the city’s rugby club.
Robbie Elliott scored the only goal of the game heading a 35th minute winner. More bad news for Wolves was the return of goalkeeper Matt Murray, he played the first 45 minutes but had to be replaced when he felt his back stiffen. Boss Dave Jones had hoped he'd play the full match.

Newcastle Reserves: Smith, Gate (Brennan 77), Elliott, Caldwell, Dabizas, Ambrose, Orr, Jenas, Offiong (Bates 70), Chopra, Ferrell (Brittain 45).
Unused Subs: Taylor, Bartlett.
Wolves Reserves: Murray (Hennessy 45), Goodhead, Bradley, Ingimarsson, Okoronkwo, Clingan, Watson (Steele 79), Silas, Clarke, Jones, McGrane.
Unused Subs: Townsend, Barnes-Homer, Lowe.
Attendance: 936.

Trivia: Today in 1891 the 1st penalty kick in English League football match was taken and scored by Joseph Heath of Wolves against Accrington at Molineux.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones described referee Uriah Rennie's display as "useless" after James Beattie scored two goals - including a contentious penalty to keep the Midlanders at the bottom of the Premiership.
Former Southampton manager Jones, released three years ago by Saints to successfully fight a court case, stormed: "This game seemed to be all about making Uriah Rennie look good.

"I have to be careful about what I say but he was useless out there."

Kevin Phillips won a 37th-minute penalty for Saints' breakthrough, going down from Denis Irwin's challenge.

Jones said: "Fair enough, because Denis said he slightly caught him but if he gives that as a penalty then he has to give the one when Beattie wrestled down Jody Craddock in their box after we caught them out with a quick free-kick.
"But that wasn't given. And how the referee has ended up with eight bookings I just don't know. I couldn't make sense of a lot of his decisions.
"It's not that I'm sick about not winning here especially. I'm not built that way. I don't like losing anywhere but I fully believed we had nothing to fear until the penalty. I thought we matched them in midfield and attack.
"But Beattie got a superb second goal and you could say he was the difference in the end. He's a big player at Southampton now especially after breaking into the international set-up.
"I brought him to the club but every manager who has worked with him since then has seen him improve."

Team News

Southampton: Record signing Rory Delap is back, the Irishman has been out for three weeks with a sprained ankle, but he is fit to return along with Chris Marsden, who has recovered from knee surgery.
But Latvian striker Marian Pahars (groin) and Ecuadorian Agustin Delgado (back) are still out.

Wolves: Hassan Kachloul is set to make his Wolves bow against his former club at St Mary's.
The Moroccan midfielder, who played under Jones at Southampton, has joined on a four-month loan deal from Aston Villa.
Kachloul could be joined in the starting line-up by Republic of Ireland winger Mark Kennedy, who is yet to make an appearance this season because of an ankle injury.

10th September 2003

Injury Update

Mark Kennedy has returned to training, after being out with an injury he picked up in the friendly against Swindon.
Kenny Miller is looking to return to full training in the next couple of weeks. Miller had a hernia operation in June and has been out of action since, but last week he went to see a specialist in Germany and the results showed scar tissue is the most likely cause of his continued discomfort and he has since had an injection to treat the problem.
Also looking to be returning to training next week is Kevin Cooper. The midfielder sustained a painful ankle injury when Wolves played Charlton two weeks ago and had to be stretchered from the field. Scans to his ankle have shown no serious damage, just bruising to the bone.

9th September 2003

Reserves Lose

Wolves reserves were beaten 3-0 by Birmingham reserves but the scoreline made the game sound more one-sided than it actually was.
Totally against the run of play, Birmingham scored in the 53rd minute, when Figueroa bulleted home a header after a corner from Hughes. Then within two minutes Motteram sidefooted the ball into the net after a square pass from Kirovski. Figueroa made it three on the hour, with a shot on the turn following a Motteram pass.

Wolves Reserves: Ikeme, Goodhead, Talbot, Flynn, Townsend, O’Connor, Gobern, Melligan, Clarke, Watson (Steele 80), McGrane.
Unused subs: Lowe, Hennessy, Barnes-Homer, Bradley.
Birmingham Reserves: Doyle, Sheppard, Sadler, Hughes, Purse, Painter, Till (Barrowman 58), Figueroa (Curtis 80), Kirvoski, Carter, Motteram.
Unused subs: Vaughan, Legzdins, Birley.

Keeper Goes Home

Goalkeeper Paulo Costinha has been on trial at Molineux for a week but is returning home to Portugal, he had his final training session this morning and boss Dave Jones has decided not to sign him.
Jones was desperately disappointed not to have signed the Cameroon international Carlos Kameni, who was unable to obtain a work permit, and is still searching for a third senior keeper.
Wolves only have one fully fit keeper Michael Oakes, Matt Murray who took Oake's place in goal has been struggling with a back injury.

Lescott Ends Rumours

Wolves defender Joleon Lescott has dismissed rumours his knee injury worries could spell the end of his career.
The 21-year-old Lescott underwent surgery on both knees over the summer and there have been suggestions he may not return to Molineux.
He said on WOW: "I’ve heard a few rumours myself but there’s nothing to worry about.
"I hope to be back training in a few weeks, fingers crossed, and I hope to be there or thereabouts a couple of weeks after that.

7th September 2003

International Update

Wolves striker Steffen Iversen was left on the bench as Norway were beaten 1-0 by Bosnia-Herzegovina in Zenica. Welsh striker Nathan Blake was also on the bench as Wales lost 4-0 in Italy, but he played for the last 8 minutes.
Colin Cameron was in the the Scottish team that beat Faroes team 3-1 at Hampden Park and Joey Gudjonsson also played for the 90 minutes as Iceland and Germany drew 0-0 in Reykjavik, Ivar Ingimarsson was on the bench for Iceland.
Oleg Luzhny recovered from the toe injury and played in the Ukraine’s goalless draw with Northern Ireland in Donetsk.

If I have forgotten any of our International players, please let me know.

5th September 2003

Injury Update

Wolves striker Kenny Miller traveled to see a German specialist on Monday after he continued to suffer pain following his hernia operation in the summer.
Wolves have now received the results and club doctors and medical staff will sit down to discuss the best method of treatment.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "We have now got the results back and the medical staff are meeting to discuss what happens next.
"Obviously everyone wants to see Kenny back as soon as possible but we need to make sure we do things correctly and don’t hinder the problem any further.
"We are still discussing the next course of action. We think scar tissue is still the most likely problem and the specialist has indicated that he thinks he’s found what might be causing Kenny pain. But, as ever, our main priority is making sure the player gets the best treatment, however long it takes."

Wolves defender Joleon Lescott could be out of action until November, after undergoing knee surgery to clean out both his knees in June.
He has had continued discomfort and a setback in his rehabilitation programme means it will be at least another six weeks before Lescott is back on the fitness trail and by the time he hits the 100 per cent mark it will be the end of October.
Wolves boss Dave Jones will not want to rush his return incase it aggravates his injury problems.
Lescott could therefore make his Premiership debut in the away game at Middlesbrough on 1st November, but the televised home game with Birmingham City a week later could be a more likely comeback date.

Proudlock Signs For Owls

Adam Proudlock has completed a permanent move to Sheffield Wednesday, which could be worth as much as £325,000 to Wolves.
The 22-year-old striker has signed a three-year deal and will link up with former Molineux youth team coach Chris Turner, who is now manager of the Owls.
He agreed personal terms in Yorkshire today before signing in time to make a debut in tomorrow's Second Division clash with Tranmere.
Proudlock was on loan at Hillsborough last season and scored two goals in five games, he was also loaned out to Clyde, Nottingham Forest and Tranmere during his time at Molineux, where he started 48 games for Wolves and scored 17 goals.

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey said: "We have agreed a six-figure sum for Adam that could rise to £325,000, subject to various clauses.
"We are happy with the deal and are pleased that Adam will now be competing for regular first team football. He needed to be playing regularly in order to progress but he wasn't going to get that here at Molineux.
"It was in everyone's best interests that we agreed to sell the player.
"Adam has been with us many years and everyone will be sad to see him go. He is one of our youngsters who has come through the youth ranks and we always want our kids to do well."

Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "Everyone at the club wishes Adam all the best.
"He's been at the club for a long time, having served his apprenticeship here, and is well liked around the place.
"This is a good opportunity for him to get regular first team football and we hope that it's one of those occasions where it will help him turn a corner and get back on track."

Keeper On Trial

Wolves are giving a week’s trial to Portuguese goalkeeper Paulo Costinha. The 29 year old is out of contract at Leiria where he made 25 appearances last season and is a free agent.

Reserves Lose

A young Wolves reserve side lost 5-0 to Everton last night.
Everton took the lead in the 18th minute, Ferguson shot from near the penalty spot but it was blocked by Ikeme, but the ball bounced off the keeper onto the shoulder of Ferguson who was down on the ground, with his back to goal and not even looking, and rebounded into the empty net.
They got their second in the 34th minute, O’Hanlon headed into the top corner of the net.
Ferguson got his second in the 58th minute with a bullet header from Carsley’s free-kick.
The fourth Everton goal was in the 72nd minute when Niclas Alexandersson headed a deep centre from the left across the face of goal to Pascucci who stooped to nod in at the far post.
Chadwick got the fifth in the final minute of the game when he ran half the length of the pitch before drilling the ball under Ikeme’s dive.

Late Transfer

Wolves signed on loan Aston Villa midfielder Hassan Kachloula late on transfer deadline day, the 30-year old Moroccan international will be at Molineux until 17th January.
Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "Hassan can play on the left or right, or in the middle. I'm really pleased to be able to strengthen the squad with a player who has plenty of Premier League experience.
"I know all about him from my Southampton days and am looking forward to working with him again."

Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to sign Wolves striker Adam Proudlock. The two clubs have agreed a fee for the 22-year-old, who scored twice in five appearances while on loan at Hillsborough last season.
Owls boss Chris Turner has already failed in bids to land Luton's Steve Howard and Stockport's Luke Beckett.
But he hopes it will be third time lucky with Proudlock, who has not figured for Wolves this season.
"He'll bring us pace, power and hopefully the goals, as well as competition for places up front," Turner told his club's website.

Transfer News

Two of Wolves transfer targets have signed for Portsmouth on transfer deadline day.
First Harry Redknapp swooped to secure the services of Czech Republic goalkeeper Pavel Srnicek ahead of Wolves, after the keeper had been training with Wolves and they were widely tipped to sign him from Brescia.
Then Redknapp followed that move up by beating Wolves, Leicester and Wigan to snap up West Brom striker Jason Roberts on loan.
Fortunately clubs can still sign goalkeepers on loan outside the transfer window if there are exceptional circumstances, but such a move requires Premier League board approval. Clubs can also sign free agents at any stage during the season.

Jones Signs New Deal

Wolves boss Dave Jones has signed a new three-year contract , Jones' new improved deal is a direct result of the manager getting the club into the top flight for the first time in 19 years.
"We were all disappointed not to win promotion the season before last but you can't take it away from Dave and the team," said chief executive Jez Moxey.
"What they achieved in finally getting us into the Premiership after such a long absence was magnificent and the new contract is in recognition of that," he told the club's official website.
Jones joined Wolves in January 2001 and had just one season left to run on his previous deal.
"I'm delighted with the new contract and pleased that it's all signed and out the way," said Jones.
"Now I can just concentrate on football matters."
