Wolves Fail To Lure Boksic Back

Wolves boss Dave Jones has revealed that he has failed with an ambitious attempt to bring Croatian striker Alen Boksic back to The Premiership.
Boksic has been without a club since he left Middlesbrough last season and Jones was keen to find out if he could attract him to Molineux.
Jones held talks with the 33-year-old and his agent, but the proposed move fell through as they failed to get back in touch with the Wolves chief.

Dave Jones said: "I spoke to the boy and his agent and I thought we were in with a shout of signing him.
"We were supposed to have a meeting with him and his agent but his agent never got back to us, so I take it that he's declined us at the moment."

Team News

Middlesbrough are looking for their first home win in three starts against Wolves and spirits are high on Teesside after their Carling Cup win over Wigan and their point against Tottenham last Sunday.
Boro boss Steve McClaren is expected to change the team from the one which won at The JJB Stadium on Wednesday and go back to the line-up which faced Spurs at White Hart Lane.
That will see the likes of Colin Cooper, Malcolm Christie and Boudewijn Zenden returning for Chris Riggott, Jonathan Greening and Michael Ricketts.

If any changes are made then Massimo Maccarone may well retain his place - after scoring in midweek - and Juninho will also hope to keep compatriot Doriva out of the first XI.
England Under-21 star Andrew Davies will be on the bench after filling in for Danny Mills at Spurs - who missed the game to see his son being born.

Wolves travel to Teesside looking to extend their unbeaten run to seven games. Dave Jones's side are in good form, but they have a number of injury worries.
Matt Murray has been ruled out with a foot problem, while Shaun Newton has suffered a chest infection - the same illness which kept Paul Ince out of their win over Leicester - but the former Boro star is fit to make his first return to The Riverside since leaving in 2001.

Denis Irwin is set for a recall in place of Oleg Luzhny, while Nathan Blake is likely to partner Henri Camara up-front, with Dean Sturridge still out with a groin problem.
Moroccan midfielder Hassan Kachloul is also a major doubt with a calf strain.
Wolves have failed to add a goalkeeper to their squad, and youngster Carl Ikeme will continue to provide cover for Michael Oakes.

Wolves will be wearing their all black away kit for the first time tomorrow.

Keeper Request Refused

The Premier League has refused Wolves request to bring in a goalkeeper on loan outside of the transfer window. Michael Oakes is Wolves only fit senior keeper, Matt Murray has been ruled out of action for this weekend’s trip to Middlesbrough after a scan showed up a hotspot on his foot. The cause of the problem remains unclear. This has left Academy youngster Carl Ikeme to be Wolves substitute keeper
Club secretary Richard Skirrow met with representatives from the Premier League yesterday afternoon to discuss the current goalkeeping crisis at Molineux. Boss Dave Jones said on WOW "The Premier League won’t give us special permission to bring in another keeper.
"If we’d got three goalkeepers and two were injured then we’d be OK but as we have only one injury then even though we've only got the two keepers to start off with, because of the problems over the summer, we were deemed as being outside of the criteria.
"It’s come as a bit of a shock, I have to admit but we have to get on with it and see what our other options are."
Wolves could now either find a goalkeeper who is not attached to a club or to take a player from a club currently in administration.
"The problem is that there aren’t many clubs in administration and those that are aren't carrying spare senior keepers. Likewise, it’s an uphill struggle to find a good keeper who is not with a club already.
"But, we have no other option so that is now our task. We’ll look at those clubs we’re allowed to approach and see if there’s any chance of bringing someone in as soon as possible. For now though, it looks likely that we’ll have to put the youngster on the bench again on Saturday which is far from ideal but, he has to look at it as a massive chance for him. When else is a 17-year-old keeper going to be a sub for a Premiership team?"

Reserves Lose

Wolves reserves lost 3-1 away against Sunderland reserves last night.
Sunderland took the lead after 29 minutes, Clark headed in from James corner. Wolves drew level 6 minutes before half-time, Vincent hammered a tremendous drive that was heading for the top corner until Ingham leapt across his goal to touch the ball away. But the Wolves man regained possession on the by-line just inside the area and curled a shot over the keeper’s head and just inside the far post.
The referee controversially awarded a penalty in the 58th minute and showed Mark Clyde a red card after the match official deemed that he had pushed Chris Kingsberry in the home penalty area although it looked as if the Sunderland man had lost his footing as he shot at goal. Clark scored from the spot to put Sunderland back ahead.
Ten minutes from the end Black got Sunderland’s third when he slid in and pushed the ball home following a low cross from Stephen Wright.

Wolves Reserves: Ikeme, Goodhead, Bradley, Clyde, Okoronkwo, Clingan, Vincent, Gascoigne, Clarke, Jones (Mulligan 87), Gobern (Townsend 60).
Unused Subs: Hennessey, Steele, Watson.
Yellow Card: Clingan. Red Card: Clyde.
Sunderland Reserves: Ingham, Wright, Scott (Smith 90), Dickman, Clark (Leadbitter 81), Collins, Black, Thirlwell, Ramsden, James, Kingberry (Ryan 73).
Unused Subs: Dodds, McLean.

Gazza Wants Comeback

36-year-old Paul Gascoigne is keen for one more crack at Premiership football after making his competitive return for Wolves reserves on Wednesday night, he put in a full 90 minutes in the 3-1 defeat against Sunderland at Telford United's Bucks Head ground.

He said on WOW: "I have been enjoying training, but playing is a different kettle of fish.
"It was tough but very enjoyable. I didn't have to be outstanding, I just needed to put a shift in and come away pleased with my efforts.
"I need more games to get my fitness up, but Dave Jones has been brilliant and has been telling me not to push myself but to just keep plugging away.
"You have to give the man credit for having the bottle to take me on.
"I never thought I would be able to have one more crack at it.
"It would be great if something comes of this, but if not there is always the option of Dubai."

Carling Cup

Wolves have drawn Arsenal in the Fourth Round of the Carling Cup. They will travel to Highbury for match in the week beginning 1st December, date to be confirmed.

Injury Updates

Wolves defender Joleon Lescott could be ruled out for the rest of the season after complications over his knee injury, he has been sidelined since undergoing an operation following Wolves play-off success in May.
Lescott is believed to have torn cartilage around the outside of the knee and Wolves are looking around the world for a suitable surgeon.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "Hopefully we will get it sorted out so we can get him back before the end of the season.
"Everyone is devastated for him but hopefully we can stay in the Premiership so he can play in the top flight.''

Wolves are also stepping up the search for a third goalkeeper after the news that Matt Murray has injured his foot. The boss will be contacting the Premier League asking for special dispensation to bring in a keeper outside the transfer window.

Match Reaction

Kenny Miller had an extra reason to celebrate after steering Wolves into the fourth round of the Carling Cup at Molineux on Tuesday night.
Miller scored the opener in Wolves' 2-0 win over Burnley one day after his partner Lorna gave birth to their first child, Coby.
Miller's 48th minute strike was his first since returning from injury after the play-off final and boss Dave Jones was full of praise for his contribution.

Jones said: "Kenny's had a great 24 hours - his partner had their baby and he's got his goal as well.
"I think Kenny showed a little bit more sharpness when he got his goal because he had been out for a long time.
"We were expecting him to come back and do a job but it was always going to be hard for him."

Jones was generally happy with his side's performance which extends their unbeaten run to six matches despite Michael Oakes coming to their rescue with two fine point blank saves.

Jones added: "It was a job well done overall. They had better shots on target in the first half but we got the break when we needed it and that settled us down.
"The important thing was to get through and also to give a game to some of the fringe players who have not had a chance to play for 90 minutes."

Team News

Wolves: boss Dave Jones will give some of his fringe players a chance to impress in the Carling Cup tie.
Dean Sturridge, Isaac Okoronkwo and Oleg Luzhny are all expected to start as Jones gives some of Saturday's Molineux heroes a break.
Denis Irwin will not be risked because of a thigh strain while Hassan Kachloul is missing under the terms of his loan agreement with Aston Villa.
Paul Ince is expected to be missing with a cold but Mark Kennedy could return following a thigh injury.

Burnley: are sweating over the fitness of Paul Weller and Luke Chadwick after they sustained injuries in the draw with Millwall.
Weller hurt his calf while Chadwick damaged his toes, leaving them doubtful for the Carling Cup clash against Wolves on Tuesday.
Boss Stan Ternent told the club's official website: "Weller felt his calf go in the second minute and it was the base of his calf so that's unfortunate. He'll have to have a scan on that to see how it is.
"Then Chaddy got a whack on his toes and we'll need to get that X-rayed.
"I don't think they'll have a chance for Tuesday at this stage, but we'll have to see."

January Transfer Plans

Wolves boss Dave Jones has confirmed he will be ready to move for Latvian striker Maris Verpakovsis when the transfer window reopens in January.
Verpakovsis had a trial at Molineux in the summer, and Jones decided not to pursue an immediate transfer, instead he has continued to monitor the 23-year-old.
Verpakovsis currently plays for Skonto Riga, the same club that Jones swooped to sign Marian Pahars from during his time as Southampton boss.

Cameroon goalkeeper Carlos Kameni is also considered to be a target for January, he is desperate to revive his move to The Premiership.
He was just about to seal a move to Wolves during the summer but the deal collapsed when he was refused a work permit.
Kameni then returned to Le Havre where he has been forced to play second fiddle to Alexander Vencel this term while Marseille had a loan bid for the teenager rejected.

But the 19-year-old has not given up hope of resurrecting a move to Molineux in the New Year as he hopes to secure French nationality in the coming weeks.
The promising keeper was bitterly disappointed not to wrap up his dream move to England and is eager to leave Le Havre at the earliest opportunity.
Wolves boss Dave Jones has confirmed he will explore the possibility of renewing his £2.5 million bid to sign Kameni, although he could face competition from other Premiership clubs.

Kameni said: "I was very disappointed I didn't sign on in England because my mind was already in England
"Wolverhampton were very interested in starting a loan. Then, they made an offer but I can't go to England at the moment.
"I hope it will change. I am trying to get French nationality. In this case, there won't be any more problems for me to go to England.
"It's my dream to play there.
"I have contacts with English clubs and they want to move as quick as possible.
"Wolverhampton are still interested and they have regular contacts with Le Havre. They are just waiting for me to get a French passport before signing me.
"If this happens, I will move in January. Le Havre won't be opposed to my transfer."

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones believes the 4-3 victory over Barclaycard Premiership basement outfit Leicester could rank as the greatest comeback ever seen at Molineux.
The visiting Foxes had built a 3-0 interval lead thanks to a brace from Les Ferdinand and Riccardo Scimeca's first goal for the Walkers Stadium club.

But the hosts produced a sensational second-half display which featured Colin Cameron scoring two goals of his own, the second from the penalty spot, before Alex Rae restored parity and Henri Camara pounced for an 85th-minute winner.

"That's probably the comeback of all comebacks at this football club, I've never been involved in anything like that in senior football," said Molineux supremo Jones.
"We did not turn up at all for the first half, we didn't even deserve to be on the same park as Leicester and I didn't recognise my players out there.
"It's fair to say the crowd booed them off at half-time and then I booed them into the dressing room.
"I'm not going to divulge what I said in there, that's between myself and the players, but it certainly wasn't a very nice atmosphere.

"Half-time was all about regrouping but I told them if Leicester had scored three goals against us in the first half, there was no reason we couldn't score three against them in the second.
"I would certainly have settled for a point but we got the third goal with time still left on the clock and the surge which went around the stadium was that we could go on to win it.
"But, despite a comeback like that we need to have a reality check.
"We just did not turn up and against the best teams in Premiership we won't be coming back from three goals down.
"In the first half we didn't pass it, we didn't get a tackle in, we didn't do anything which would have got us into a position to get the three points.
"To be honest, I'm more down about the first half performance than I'm pleased about the second but I'm not going to be knocking the players, how can you knock them after a comeback like that?"

Match Preview

Wolves: entertain Leicester at Molineux on Saturday in a bottom-of-the-table clash which is already been viewed as a relegation six pointer.
The home side are unbeaten in their last three games as they come to grips with The Premiership, while Leicester are battling to avoid their fifth successive defeat.

Wolves are likely to be without influential captain Paul Ince as he is struggling with a chest infection.
Dave Jones welcomes back Steffen Iversen into his squad after recovering from a calf strain but fellow forwards Dean Sturridge and George Ndah have both suffered setbacks in their recovery programmes.
Republic of Ireland winger Mark Kennedy faces a race against time to recover from a groin strain to play.

Doctors have confirmed that defender Joleon Lescott will need further surgery to try and cure his ongoing knee problems. Wolves boss Dave Jones and the medical team met this afternoon to discuss what would be the best course of action to aid Joleon’s recovery. The defender had operations to both knees following the play-off final but he has continued to struggle with stiffness and soreness in the right knee joint as he makes his way through a rehabilitation programme.

Leicester: skipper Matt Elliott is pushing for a recall after missing all of the season so far with a broken toe.
Elliott completed another 90 minutes in midweek for the reserves and he will be vying with Gerry Taggart and Frank Sinclair for a place in defence.
Ben Thatcher is still not fully recovered from a bout of pneumonia although he was able to complete 75 minutes for the reserves in his comeback match.
Foxes boss Micky Adams could ring the chances as he looks for his side to climb off the bottom of the table.

Bully On Sky

Wolves legend Steve Bull will be on Sky's Goals on Sunday this weekend with hosts Rob McCaffrey and Chris Kamara to talk all things football.
Bully will assess Wolves start to life in the Premiership as well as looking back at his career.

Royal Ivar

Ivar Ingimarsson's transfer to Reading is due to be completed this morning and he is set to be unveiled at a 1pm press conference at the Madejski Stadium. The deal is worth £100,000 which could rise to £175,000 with bonuses and extras, Wolves have also secured a sell-on clause of 25 per cent.
Chief executive Jez Moxey said on WOW: "The transfer is now virtually complete and we send Ivar to Reading with our very best wishes.
"He has been a good team member and I personally think that Reading are getting a bargain but, when you consider that he would have been out of contract at the end of the season and has had limited playing opportunities then it is the best move for the club. It is unlikely that we would have taken the option to extend Ivar’s contract by a further year.
"The move will allow the player to challenge for regular first team football and we hope it proves to be a good move for him."

In other transfer news Wolves boss Dave Jones has rubbished reports in this morning's Sun newspaper claiming that he is trying to temp Peter Schmeichel out of retirement.
He said on WOW: "I don’t know where they get these things from.
"It claims to be an exclusive, but an exclusive from who?
"I have made no contact with anyone about Peter, nor had I been planning to. It claims that Paul Ince is working as the middle man but he’s been off the last day or two so I’ve not even spoken to him.
"Everyone knows we’ve been looking for a goalkeeper but with Matt fit again and Michael Oakes doing well there is no need to panic and start looking for a ‘quick fix’ as they put it."

22nd October 2003

Ivar On His Way

Chief executive Jez Moxey has revealed Wolves have agreed a deal with Reading over the proposed transfer of defender/midfielder Ivar Ingimarsson.
Royals boss Steve Coppell has made no secret of the fact he is keen to sign Ivar and is currently ironing out personal terms.
But, Moxey confirmed Crystal Palace are also interested in signing the 26-year-old Icelandic International.
Moxey said on WOW: "We have agreed a deal with Reading and Ivar is currently involved in discussions with them regarding personal terms.
"Crystal Palace have also made us an offer but this has yet to be finalised. Ivar and his agent are aware of their interest.
"The proposed transfer would be worth £100,000 rising to almost double that depending on appearances and his new team's performance. There would also be a sell-on clause written in to any transfer."

Lescott Injury Update

Wolves defender Joleon Lescott is going to see a specialist on Thursday after suffering more problems with his right knee. Lecott had surgery to both knees following the play-off final last May and was just about to return to full training a fortnight ago when he suffered a setback in the joint.
Dave Jones said on WOW: “The boy is feeling pain from the knee which also became swollen as he increased his work load.
“He hasn’t got full mobility in the knee so we felt it best that the specialist takes a look to assess the situation.”
The boss added some better news on three of the club’s other long term injuries.
“George Ndah and Mark Clyde will hopefully have a run out in the reserves game with Manchester United on Thursday night.
“And Kevin Cooper has improved over the last couple of weeks. His injury was more severe than we first thought but, with a bit of luck, he should be playing again in about two weeks.”

20th October 2003

Youth Results

Wolves under 19s drew at home 1-1 against Bolton with only 10 men. Leon Clarke put Wolves ahead after 20 minutes when he latched on to a Kevin O’Connor through ball. He beat one defender and held off another as he was forced wide before scoring with a low angled shot.
But ten minutes later, Leon was the victim of a bad tackle on the halfway line and, unfortunately, he retaliated and was sent off.
Bolton equalised a minute before the interval when defensive uncertainty gave one of their players the chance to head in at the far post.

Wolves under 17s won 2-1 away at Crewe. Wolves went one down after just 90 seconds, from a 20-yard shot.
Tom Stewart leveled after a Chris Cornes cross in the 18th minute, and Wolves continued to dominate, then Cornes scored when he cleverly hooked the ball in after running into the right side of the Crewe box.

19th October 2003

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after Wolves 0-0 draw with Fulham: "It's important to get as many points as possible and this will be a big lift for the lads on the way home.
"Confidence is flowing through the club and that's a good thing.
"We've worked hard to get here and we're fighting to stay in it. The biggest thing is how you react after defeats - and we've reacted well.
"So if you want to call it a siege mentality, call it that. Let's keep plugging away and prove people wrong.
"Our guys who had already been in the Premiership already knew what it took to play in this division - but the others didn't and needed time to learn.
"I told my players it's okay having graft but we played some good football out there.
"When the opposition keeper pulls off the saves he did and when we had the chances we had, you feel hard done by.
"As a manager, I feel disappointed we didn't come away with three points because we had good chances."

The boss also said about the effect former England star Paul Gascoigne, training with Wolves to regain his fitness, has had on his squad.
"It's good for our young players. When will they ever get an opportunity to play with somebody of his stature?
"I've got a great admiration for him and it's a pleasure for me to help him out."

Team News

Fulham: are missing Argentine striker Facundo Sava with the shoulder injury he picked up two weeks ago and he may have to undergo surgery on the problem.
Martin Djetou has shaken off a minor abductor strain picked up during a reserve game last week and is fit to play as is Dean Leacock after a hamstring strain.
The hosts are still without long-term injury victim Sean Davis so Lee Clark will continue to captain Chris Coleman's side.

Wolves: are without inspirational skipper Paul Ince for the trip to London as he is forced to serve a one-match ban after collecting five bookings this season.
Loan signings Hassan Kachloul and Joey Gudjonsson are battling it out to replace Ince in midfield, otherwise Wolves boss Dave Jones is likely to keep faith with the side that beat Manchester City.

Rae And Cameron Receive Awards

Wolves midfielder Alex Rae has earned the title of Goal of the Month from ITV's The Premiership for his wonder goal against Bolton Wanderers. Fellow midfielder Colin Cameron has won the Barclaycard Champagne Moment for his goal which gave Wolves their first Premiership victory against Man City.
Boss Dave Jones presented the awards and said on WOW: "Alex's goal was certainly worthy of the title. It was a fantastic strike and it's just a shame it didn't win us the game.
"It's nice that Colin's goal has been recognised. It might not have been as eye-catching as Alex's but it won us our first three points."

Gazza Training With Wolves

Paul Gascoigne has joined in with the Wolves squad for training this morning. The 36 year old midfielder arrived at Compton with Paul Ince and met the rest of the squad and intends to get himself fit so he can find a club in Britain to play for. Recently he'd been playing in China and was expected to sign for a team in the Middle East.

Youth Results

Wolves under 19s won 3-1 at Liverpool on Saturday.
They took the lead in the 19th minute when John Steele put a great through ball to Gary who then played a one-two with Leon Clarke before scoring from just inside the box.
Five minutes later Gary got a second when he hooked the ball home from an angle.
Gary had the chance to complete his hat-trick in the 31st minute, he only had the keeper to beat. But his shot was saved and Liverpool broke away to force a corner which Wolves didn’t clear and the ball was eventually deflected in.
But Mark Davies restored Wolves two goal advantage just before half-time with an excellent strike. Lewis Gobern and Kevin O’Connor combined to set up the chance for Mark who had his back to goal. He turned and volleyed a great shot into the net.

The Wolves under 17s fought out a 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

International News

Wolves duo Colin Cameron and Kenny Miller played for the first 65 minutes of Scotland's 1-0 win against Lithuania at Hampden Park on Saturday. Ivar Ingimarsson played the full match for Iceland, who lost 3-0 against Germany in Hamburg, the defeat meant that it was Scotland who made it through to the play-offs in Group Five. They have been drawn away against Holland on the 18th November 2003.

Wolves striker Nathan Blake was named as a substitute for Wales and brought on five minutes from the end of their match at The Millennium Stadium against Serbia and Montenegro. They lost 3-2 but were assured of at least a place in the play-offs before the game kicked-off. They have been drawn at home against Russia on the 18th November 2003.

If I have missed any of Wolves International players please let me know.

10th October 2003

Injury Update

Wolves keeper Matt Murray’s list of injuries has grown after he suffered a dislocated finger. He has been  out of the starting 11 since the start of the season because of a back problem, but the specialist seems to have found a solution to the back problem. After analysing his game, the doctor found previous knee injuries have led to Matt altering his kicking technique to protect the knee joint. That in turn has caused other areas to come under increased pressure.
He said about his finger on WOW: "I had a little accident on the training field on Monday when I came out to catch the ball.
"It was a routine cross but I misjudged the ball and it caught me on the end of my finger. I thought nothing of it until I took my glove off to see why it was still hurting and the finger was sticking out at an angle.
"We popped it back in and I’m sure Baz (physio) will tell you that I wasn’t the bravest but, once it was in I was fine. It’s just one of those things.
"Bobby keeps telling me I’m falling apart because there seems to be something all the while. It’s been one of those months really."

A trip to the specialist has helped cast aside fears that defender Joleon Lescott had suffered a major setback in his recovery from operations he had on both knees in June to cure the cartilage problems that he had been suffering from.
He was easing back into full training last week but his right knee became painful and swollen, so Wolves medical staff immediately arranged for him to see a consultant for a scan which thankfully revealed no serious problems.

Mark Kennedy is expecting to return to full training and begin preparations for Wolves next match against Fulham next week. The winger missed last weekend’s win over his old club, Man City, with a slight hamstring strain.

7th October 2003

Reserves Lose

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones hailed the battlers who earned their first Premiership win at the eighth attempt at Molineux on Saturday.
Colin Cameron ended his side's miserable start to the season with a 75th-minute header to see off dismal Manchester City.
Jones was impressed with how his side fought for every ball and restricted the visitors to a few long-range shots on target.

He said: "We had the determination to put things right today and it was down to hard graft from the players.
"It wasn't so much getting the three points today, it was the manner in which we won the game.
"Every player who put a shirt on deserves credit because people around here were beginning to get a bit desperate and this takes that away."

After coming so close at Bolton last week Jones admitted he could not underestimate the importance of gaining the three points going into the international break.

He added: "We could not miss that opportunity today. It was probably a must-win game because it was about confidence.
"It was a great team effort which has sent all the fans home with a feelgood factor. Now we have to do it again and again until the end of the season."

Team News

Wolves boss Dave Jones is likely to have options up front for the Molineux clash with Manchester City.
Following Kenny Miller's return to action last week, Dean Sturridge, Nathan Blake and Henri Camara are all now in the frame, but Steffen Iversen is out.
Sturridge played 90 minutes in the reserves in midweek after five weeks out with a hamstring injury, while Blake has recovered from a virus and Camara is fit again after a toe infection.
Iversen, though, has torn fibres in his calf, while winger Mark Kennedy is a major doubt after being sent for a scan on a hamstring injury.

Melligan Out On Loan

He will join their squad in training tomorrow ahead of the Third Division club’s match at home to Carlisle on Saturday. The loan keeps JJ at Kidderminster up to the 2nd November, with a possibility of extending the loan deal further.
The Irish midfielder spent three months on loan with Kidderminster last season, making 29 appearances and scoring ten goals. He was recalled to Molineux during an injury crisis and made his Wolves debut as a substitute against Coventry, but then went back to the Harriers for a further month's loan.
He will join up with former Wolves team mates Graham Ward and Kenny Coleman who signed for Kidderminster after they were released by Wolves at the end of 2002/03.
Harriers have struggled to find form so far this term, picking up just two wins in 11 League outings.
