Team News

Rotherham: Top scorer Alan Lee is back from suspension, but midfielder Martin McIntosh is suspended after collecting his fifth booking of the season. Andy Monkhouse (knee) should be fit.

Wolves: Teenage Chelsea striker Carlton Cole will go straight into the squad to provide cover for the injured Nathan Blake and could start if Dean Sturridge's niggling knee problems force him out. Sturridge has been playing through the pain and will visit a specialist next week. Paul Ince should return in midfield after suspension, with Keith Andrews making way. Denis Irwin could be a doubt, he took a knock to his foot during the 2-1 win over Forest, last weekend. Colin Cameron has come through a few days workout and will be in the squad.

Fixture Update

Wolves have at last got a new date for their match against Ipswich, the original date 18 September was postponed because of Ipswich's UEFA Cup fixtures.
The match has now been arranged for Tuesday 18th February with a 7.45pm kick-off, at Portman Road.
But if they both don't get passed the third round of the FA Cup, the game could be played on Saturday 25th January, which is reserved for fourth round matches.

Carlton has made four appearances for Chelsea so far this season and scored three goals.

Another Striker Linked

Wolves have reportedly failed in a bid to sign striker Marcus Stewart on loan from Sunderland as a replacement for Nathan Blake who is out until the new year, they insisted he is part of their first-team plans and as usual Wolves would not comment on the speculation.
Chief Executive Jez Moxey said on WOW "We, as a club, have a policy of not commenting on nor revealing any potential targets."
"It is common knowledge that we are currently looking for a striker as cover for Nathan Blake and, of course, there is going to be speculation over which players we may be interested in."
"However, we have a list that we are working through, and will only discuss an individual when we have something positive to report."

Striker Update

Young striker Adam Proudlock has returned from a month loan at Tranmere and was straight back training ready to play for the reserves on Wednesday at Sheffield United, hoping to ease the Striker shortage at Molineux.

Nathan Blake is out until into the New Year, the striker ruptured ligaments in his foot in the Portsmouth game and scans revealed that two of his toes had been dislocated. He is now wearing a special boot to immobilise his foot whist the ligaments heal. These have to be fully repaired before he can return to training or he risks having a permanent weakness.
Dean Sturridge admitted being only 30 per cent fit after the first five minutes of the 2-1 win over Nottingham Forest.
The striker, who is suffering discomfort in both knees, tweaked a hamstring early on and will be wrapped in cotton wool this week in a bid to get him fit to face Rotherham on Saturday as Wolves bid to stretch their eight match unbeaten run. But
good news George Ndah will return to training this week.

Wolves may try to get Les ferdinand on loan from Spurs, after the striker was again left out of the 16 that beat Leeds on Sunday. Chief executive Jez Moxey has tried for a number of other Premiership strikers including Middlesbrough's Noel Whelan, who came on as a substitute for Alec Boksic in their weekend win over Manchester City.

The Wolves Under 19s also played Liverpool but they lost 1-0, Liverpool's goal comming two minutes from time.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after Wolves victory: "I thought it was a very tight game. It was a case of waiting for someone to make a mistake. Fortunately for us, they made two mistakes and we only made one.
"It was a tough match between two good sides, there was a lot of good football and we came out on top at the end of the day.
"Our aim was to get into the top six before Christmas. Now we have to chase the teams above us."

Wolves: boss Dave Jones has worries over his strikers he only has Kenny Miller fully fit, Dean Sturridge will start despite not training this week with knee trouble.
Midfielder Kevin Cooper has served a one-match suspension and is available.

Notts Forest: boss Paul Hart hopes to name an unchanged line-up for the fifth successive game, although he has slight concerns over full-back Jim Brennan, who is nursing a thigh injury.

Striker Update

Sky Sports are reporting that: Tottenham have turned down a bid from Wolves to take Les Ferdinand on loan.
It was widely thought that the veteran striker would leave for Molineux in search of regular first-team football after slipping down the pecking order at Spurs.
But White Hart Lane boss Glenn Hoddle has revealed that Dave Jones came knocking earlier this month and was told the 35-year-old was not available.
"I still want Les to be a part of my squad. It is as simple as that," said Hoddle.

New advert on the For Sale page, make a great Christmas present but remember a dog is for life not just for Christmas!!

Sir Les Keen On Loan Move

Striker Les Ferdinand is keen to leave Spurs and join First Division Wolves on loan after loosing his first team place to ex-Wolves striker Robbie Keane at White Hart Lane, he didn't even make the bench for the derby against Arsenal last Saturday.
Ferdinand told The Sun newspaper: "If Spurs and Wolves can reach an agreement, I will go.
"I haven't demanded to leave Spurs or anything, but at this stage of my career, my priority is playing first-team football.
"Everything else comes second. At the start of the season, I said I was going to see out the last year of my Tottenham contract, but things have changed.
"Coming on in games a minute or two before the final whistle is no good to me. I don't really feel part of things at the moment. It's not a great feeling."

The Wolves boss Dave Jones has refused to confirm or deny that the club are having talks to bring him to Molineux but did say: “If a player of his quality was available then obviously we would look at it.
“We’ve been on the lookout for a striker but as yet have had no joy.”

Loan Striker Update

Wolves are not sure they will be able to bring in a loan striker in time for the Forest match on Saturday. They have been strongly linked with Spur's Striker Les Ferdinand, John ward said: "We've made one or two enquiries with people, but at the moment there's no-one coming to the football club.''
The club have ruled out bringing back Adam Proudlock early from his loan spell with Tranmere, but may consider bringing him back after Saturday.

Any Ideas?

I wonder if you can help. We are doing a feature on Wolves as part of the 92 club series we are running on Sport on Five and wondered if you might be able to give us any pointers. We are visiting on Saturday 23rd November for the game against Ipswich and are interested in what the current issues are at the club, any characters, traditions, fans/employees with a story to tell etc. Already in the series, our  reporter Mark Clemmit has accompanied the Sheffield Wednesday band and sampled prawn sandwiches at Old Trafford with the Managing Director. He's met  the man who swapped the chance to be in Westlife for a life as a defender in Division Three, and discovered the Burnley fan who crumbles cheese all over the turf Moor terraces to bring the team good luck.

Please drop me a line if you have any ideas joe.stevens@bbc.co.uk and I will call you back. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Joe Stevens

Interview with boss Dave Jones at givemefootball.com

Player Shortage At Molineux

Wolves boss Dave Jones will be trying to bring in a loan striker this week after Wolves climbed into the top with a victory at Coventry. Wolves only fit strikers Dean Sturridge and Kenny Miller failed to score and Jones had no alternatives on the bench.
Wolves could recall young striker Adam Proudlock from Tranmere for Saturday's match against Nottingham Forest, he is due to play his final game for Tranmere at Wycombe on Saturday but Wolves could bring him back on Friday when 28 days of his loan is up, with Rovers' permission.

20-year-old JJ Melligan seems set to stay at Molineux after his dramatic recall from Kidderminster because of the midfield shortage, Ince is suspended, Cameron is out injured and Andrews has the flu after Wolves players were given flu vacinations and he reacted to it by getting the flu!

Edworthy and Irwin picked up knocks and bruises in Saturday's match, but nothing serious, Dean Sturridge is suffering with a knee problem, he knocked it in training on Friday but played on Saturday.
He’s likely to miss training this week but is determined to be fit for Saturday.
Sturridge explained on WOW: "I knocked my knee in training on Friday and I think it might have irritated a cyst which I’d felt behind the knee last season.
"It flared up and I was really worried about the game on Saturday but I woke up that morning and it didn’t feel too bad. So I told the gaffer that I’d be OK to play.
"The problem is that it’s my right knee which is giving me grief, and I already have a bit of fluid on my left one.
"The medical staff will be trying to disperse the fluid on both knees for this Saturday’s game against Forest, and while I’m missing from training it’s best to get them both sorted out.
"Every player gets twinges now and again and most players are rarely 100 per cent when we go out on the field - you just have to work hard and play through it.
"I managed that OK at Coventry and I’m sure I’ll be able to do the same next weekend."

17th November 2002

Match Reaction

Dave Jones delighted after Wolves remained unbeaten in 7 games sadid: "It was a good time to get the goals and everyone deserves a pat on the back today.
"We missed Paul Ince last week. He has a lot of experience and with him back in the side we settled down after weathering the first 15 minutes to get back into the game.
"We wanted to break the sequence of drawn matches and we went to Coventry to have a real go at getting three points.
"I must say I was happy to see Gary McAllister come off the pitch because he is quality and his departure upset Coventry's rhythm, not that I am too fussed about that."

Kennedy Allowed To Miss Friendly

Mark Kennedy has been pulled out of the Republic of Ireland squad after Wolves boss Dave Jones appealed to the Irish authorities to withdraw him due to his long injury lay off. Kennedy received the surprise call-up last week for the friendly game on Wednesday 20th November. Kennedy is fit to play on Saturday against Coventry, this is just a precautionary measure.
Dave Jones said on WOW: "We have been given permission for Mark to pull out of the friendly game next week.
"Sparky has only just come back after being out for seven months with his groin injury and we did not want him to be playing any more football than necessary.
"I'm very pleased that the FAI has understood our position. They came to the Portsmouth game and thought that Mark looked good but, given the circumstances and the fact that it’s only a friendly, they have agreed to our request and I thank Don Givens, for that."

Pollet To Go On Loan

Wolves defender Ludo Pollet is joining Walsall later today on loan for seven weeks. He is at the Bescot Stadium this morning agreeing terms and when completed he could play for them against Wimbledon on Saturday.
The loan agreement could see the 29-year-old stay at Walsall until New Year's Day, with the option for Wolves to recall him after the first 28 days.
Pollet had been linked with a permanent move to Walsall, with some other First Division clubs showing an interest in him.

Reserves Draw

Wolves reserves came back to earn a draw last night with two goals in the last ten minutes at Telford.
Rotherham took the lead in the 67th minute when Robins fired home from the edge of the area clipping the inside of the post. The Millers got their second in the 75th minute with a controversial penalty for  apparently pushing in the area, but there were no appeals from the visitors. Robins scoring from the spot kick. Ward pulled one back for Wolves after 80 minutes heading in a cross from Leon Clarke. Then in the 87th minute Jones leveled the scores.

Wolves Reserves: Solly, R. Clarke, Naylor, Andrews (Walters 45), Pollet, Butler, Watson (Fitter 71), Ward, L. Clarke, J.L. Jones, Gobern.

12th November 2002

Injury Update

Paul Ince and Nathan Blake have gone to see specialists, Ince injured an ankle in the Portsmouth game and failed to train on Sunday, while Blake is having more problems with his right foot, after sustaining damaged ligaments.
But good news on Colin Cameron's broken toe, he could now be out of action for just three weeks instead of six.
He sustained the injury in the 1-1 draw at Watford on the 2nd of November when he was only four games into his comeback following a knee injury. The 30-year-old Scot has already started some fitness work in the swimming pool.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after last night's draw with Brighton: "We had no shape in the first half and no tempo. We were like bees around the honey-pot."
"In the second half, we made their 'keeper make lots of saves but we still didn't play well. We were frantic and there was no control to our play."
"It's frustrating because we have gone from being on a high against Portsmouth last Wednesday to this. We have missed out on the chance of pegging two more points back on the teams above us."

Injuries and Suspensions Update

Good news about the two Wolves players who were sent to hospital during Wolves match against Portsmouth. The injuries are not as serious as first feared. Nathan Blake came off for treatment after falling under Ritchie’s challenge and returned a few minutes later but couldn't continue after just 15 minutes. He  suffered tissue damage to his right foot and suspected bruising to the bone. It was thought that George Ndah had suffered a broken leg again as he was stretchered off after 34 minutes following a tackle from Diabate's, but it has now been confirmed that he sustained two deep lacerations to his knee and shin, one of which went down to the bone. He had a total of ten stitches in his leg but there is no internal damage.

Paul Ince will be suspended when Wolves play Nottingham Forest at Molineux on Saturday 23rd  November. The midfielder picked up his fifth booking of the season during the Portsmouth match for dissent in the 88th minute and will serve a one-match ban.

7th November 2002

Match Reaction

"We were a bit disappointed not to have taken three points. The first half was cagey and in the second we took the game to them and might have won it."

International Call-Up's

Wolves have had two players called up for international duty. Nathan Blake is in the Welsh squad traveling to Azerbaijan for their Euro 2004 qualifying match. Ivar Ingimarsson has been selected for the Icelandic squad who will play a friendly in Estonia. Appeal From Jez

Jez Moxey will make an appeal in tonight’s programme for fans to cut out the bad language associated with the Liquidator. The popular pre-match tune was reinstated this season at the request of Sir Jack Hayward, but the chief executive is concerned that the associated chants bring the club into conflict with the Safety Advisory Group which issues the club’s matchday operating certificate. Writing in the programme Jez says: "I would like to make a special appeal to you this evening. Due to the overwhelming number of requests we had from supporters, Sir Jack recently asked that we bring back the Liquidator as part of our pre-match build-up. We had been reluctant to do this because of the bad language some fans choose to attach to the tune and I asked - via an interview I did for our website at the start of the season - that you to show restraint. Sadly many people have chosen to ignore our plea and the issue has been raised at a recent Safety Advisory Group meeting. The continuing use of bad language puts the tune’s use at risk. Therefore, if you want to keep the Liquidator, please keep it clean."

This was taken from Wolves official site WOW, as I ran a petition from this site for the Liquidator to be brought back I would also like to ask everyone to keep it clean. It would be a great shame for the Liquidator to be silenced again.

'Posh and Becks' in Black and White

Billy Wright captained England 90 times on the way to becoming the first footballer to win 100 international caps. He was skipper of the all-conquering Wolves team that pioneered European football nights in the 1950s. In A Hero for All Seasons, Norman Giller - who was a close friend - traces his life and times. Billy was the David Beckham of his time. When he married Joy Beverly of the Beverly Sisters in 1959, their wedding stopped the traffic. It received almost as much publicity as the Posh Spice and David Beckham union 40 years later.

A Hero for All Seasons is not only a story of a great sportsman, but also of an era of football that has disappeared from sight. David Beckham earns in just one week more that Billy Wright picked up as a player throughout a 20-year career. The author discusses the many other changes that have occurred to the game since Wright's time, while also exploring his career and his personal life as he rose from humble beginnings to become a folk-hero.

THE AUTHOR
Norman Giller used to ghost write for Billy in the Daily Express when Billy was Arsenal manager in the early 1960s. They remained close friends up to Billy's death at the age of 70. Giller was chief football reporter for the Express, and has since been a freelance columnist for the Sunday Telegraph, Sunday Express and The Sun. He has also had a total of 64 books published, including 17 in tandem with Jimmy Greaves. Team News

Wolves: Two Wolves players are facing late fitness tests, Nathan Blake and Colin Cameron missed training yesterday after suffering knocks in the 4-0 victory over Gillingham.
Blake was on the end of a harsh challenge, which left him with both a sore foot and an injured hand where he fell awkwardly.
Cameron suffered a kick to the outside of his leg in the match but an X-ray has confirmed that there is no serious damage and he too will be monitored closely.
Alex Rae (thigh strain) and Shaun Newton (flu) both have returned to training along with Ludo Pollet who played in the under 19 friendly with Northern Ireland.
Mo Camara is seeing his specialist hoping to get the go ahead to step up his rehabilitation programme. He recently underwent surgery on his knee.

Watford: Striker Tommy Smith is doubtful picked up a groin injury in midweek and faces a fitness test. Loan signing Danny Webber has returned to Manchester United with a dislocated shoulder, while fellow frontman Marcus Gayle could feature again after recovering from a hamstring injury with Dominic Foley also pushing for a first-team start alongside in-form Heidar Helguson.
