Team News

Wolves: Paul Butler is out through suspension, so Dave Jones has to pick a new captain for tomorrow's away trip to Watford. New signing Kenny Miller isn't available until after Christmas as he continues to recover from his broken collarbone. Colin Cameron is fit after recovering from a sore groin and hamstrings, Mark Kennedy has returned from Germany where he received specialist treatment for his on-going hamstring problems and is available.

Watford: Patrick Blondeau is available for selection tomorrow after a hamstring strain, Tommy Smith is also set to start and Stephen Glass will also return. Ex-Wolves Allan Nielsen is again likely to start from the bench after recovering from an ankle injury.

Tranmere Interested in Branch

Wolves striker Micheal Branch is already being linked with Tranmere Rovers as their boss Dave Watson is interested in the striker after playing with him at Everton. It's thought Rovers could initially offer Wolves a loan deal as they don't have much money available for transfers at present.
Wolves Chief executive Jez Moxey has hinted that they might let Branch leave on loan and Tranmere look set be the first side to make a bid.
Also Luton have revealing they could not afford Cedric Roussel's wages. Manageross Joe Kinnear did want the Belgian services at least on loan but has had to admit that he is out of the Third Division club's price range.
Kinnear said: "Roussel was priced at £1.2 million but we would have taken him on loan if his salary wasn't enormous. He is on £6000 a week, which is a lot of money."

Wolves boss Dave Jones has also said there will be more players leaving Molineux, and some more joining if they can recoup the £2 million transfer fee paid for Roussel.

20th December 2001

Two Strikers Transfer Listed

Wolves have transfer listed Cedric Roussel and Michael Branch with immediate effect. Wolves boss Dave Jones informed both players today that Wolves were looking to sell them after his new signings, Roussel has made only six first team starts and Branch four this season.
Roussel joined Wolves from Coventry for £1.5 million in February 2001 and was Jones second signing, Branch signed for £500,000 from Everton in January 2000 after a successful loan at Molineux.
Manager Dave Jones said on www.wolves.co.uk: “Sometimes you sign players and it just doesn’t work out. Cedric has been one of those players. As for Michael, with Shaun Newton coming in, his opportunities are limited. We shall be looking for a fee for both players and there may be one or two more – either up for sale or available for loan - to announce soon.”

Sturridge Fee Agreed

Wolves and Leicester City have agreed a fee for striker Dean Sturridge’s, although his permanent transfer to Molineux is not yet finalised as an agreement on personal terms has not yet been reached, talks between the club and agents representing the player continue on that.

Chief executive Jez Moxey said on www.wolves.co.uk: "I am pleased to say that a transfer fee has now been agreed with Leicester City for the permanent signing of Dean.
"It is a fee that is acceptable to both clubs but the figure won’t be divulged by us until personal terms and conditions have been fully agreed between ourselves and the player.
"We are having on-going discussions with Dean’s agent and, as we have not been able to reach an agreement so far, we will be considering our position before presenting our very best and final offer.
"However, these negotiations may not be completed before the team departs for Saturday’s match at Watford which means that we will endevour to complete them on Christmas Eve which would enable Dean to be eligible to play against Preston North End on Boxing Day."

Good News from Germany

The Wolves squad had a boost with the news that winger Mark Kennedy does not have a troublesome hamstring problem and will be fit for Saturday's match against Watford.
Kennedy went to Munich on Monday for a consultation with top specialist Dr Hans Muller Wolfhardt, and he has assured Kennedy the trouble centers around a nerve in his back. He has had a short course of treatment and flies back to England today

Sturridge Talks to Open

Wolves are to start discussing the permanent transfer of striker Dean Sturridge with Leicester for £350,000, but Leicester boss Dave Bassett has said that no fee has been agreed with Wolves, and he is determined to try and get as high a price he can for Sturridge to help Leicester in the transfer market. Bassett said: "If Wolves come back, then we will talk about what sort of fee we would get. The more money I can get in for the club the better it is because I might get some return in the transfer market myself."
Sturridge scored four goals in his first two appearances for Wolves including a hat-trick but hasn't scored since and is in the final week of a one month's loan at Molineux, Dave Jones has made it clear that his £3 million signing of striker Kenny Miller from Rangers last week will not affect his decision on Sturridge.

Bans Mount Up

Three of Wolves first-team players have to serve bans in the next eight days, with four more one booking away from a ban.
Wolves captain Paul Butler is out of Saturday's match against Watford at Vicarage Road because of a one-game ban resulting from five bookings. George Ndah's will be sidelined for the three games after Christmas Day through suspension following a straight red whilst playing in the reserves last week, Cedric Roussel and Adam Proudlock were also sent off in that reserves match.  But they escaped bans because they were dismissed for two yellow cards and not outright red-card offences.
Joleon Lescott is still hoping there is a chance that his red card at Manchester City last week might be scaled down to a yellow. If not he will sit out the matches against Preston, Sheffield United and Crewe. Wolves boss Dave Jones said: "I'm not particularly optimistic, but we are trying to get the sending-off rescinded and should hear in the next 48 hours, but we're not raising our hopes too high."

Larkin Told He Can Stay

Wolves young striker Colin Larkin has been told he can rejoin Kidderminster on loan for the rest of the season. Larkin impressed Harriers manager Jan Molby
scoring three goals, including two match winners Molby said: "We are delighted Dave Jones has let Colin stay. Colin has played a big part in transforming our season and I'm sure he will score more goals as he becomes more composed."

Police Raid Suspected Hooligans

Police arrested five men from the Wolverhampton area who are suspected of football hooliganism in a series of dawn raids on Sunday codenamed Operation Pinpoint, before Wolves local derby with Birmingham City a further five suspects were then detained close to Molineux.
The operation was aimed at ringleaders who were planning violence similar to that which took place earlier in the month when West Brom visited to Molineux.
A spokesman at Molineux said: "The club welcomes any police initiative that will deter hooligans from attending games and spoiling it for the vast majority of supporters who are well behaved, law abiding people." There has been 17 ejections with no arrests inside Molineux since the start of season and during the match with the Blues there was no incidents inside the ground.

Wolves and Rangers have finally agreed on the transfer of striker Kenny Miller, and he could be a Molineux player tomorrow. The fee is £3 million, with just personal terms to be agreed and a medical to be completed, although he's currently injured. Wolves are in desperate need of a goal scorer after yesterdays 1-0 defeat they haven't scored a goal in 292 minutes (not including the own goal at Grimsby).

Boss Not Happy With Decision

Wolves boss Dave Jones has blasted the referee for sending Jo Lescott off and claims Wolves were cheated at Maine Road  last night.

Jones said last night on www.wolves.co.uk: "It was a poor decision. It was not a violent tackle, Jo's foot was on the floor.
"It's a good job the advertising boards were there otherwise the fella (Benarbia) would have rolled into Moss Side.
"I don't know what kind of sponge their physio has got but it worked wonders!
"I've watched a replay over and over.  I don't think I am biased when I see a bad tackle but I think we were cheated today. If anything it was a yellow card - not a straight red.
"I can't say it will be a lesson learned because Jo is an honest player but the two officials have been conned tonight.
"The linesman seemed to make the decision but I hope the referee will take a look at the incident again and be big enough to stand up and say I made a mistake.
"Even after they took the lead I felt confident we would get back in it but the sending off changed things. I'm disappointed we didn't pick up anything from the game."

Miller Transfer Update

Wolves and Rangers are still negotiating Kenny Miller's permanent transfer to Wolves, Miller's three month loan at Molineux is due to expire this Friday. There were reports in the press that Wolves had made a £2.3 million bid for Miller but chief executive Jez Moxey said on WOW: "We have made three bids for Kenny Miller, all of which have been in excess of the figure quoted in the press today.
"There is a limit to the funds available to us for transfers and we will not pay more than we think a player is worth - and that includes Kenny.
"It is club policy not to conduct transfer business in public and we prefer not to divulge financial details before a transfer is concluded. But these negotiations have been far from straight forward.
"Nevertheless we are hopeful that we will be able to conclude a deal which will see Kenny become a permanent Wolves player."
The three bids Wolves have made are, the first for his loan to be extended until the end of the season, but that was turned down by the Scottish club. The second was to sign him permanently but Wolves offer was refused, the third offer is still being considered but could be delayed for a few days as Rangers are set to travel to France tomorrow for Thursday’s UEFA Cup game against Paris St Germain.
