Team News

Wolves: striker Dean Sturridge is out for six weeks after tearing fibres in his calf muscle. George Ndah (flu) is expected to undergo a late fitness test after being sent home from training but midfielder Alex Rae will be available again after completing a one-match suspension. Denis Irwin could feature after recovering from an ankle problem.

Derby: hope to welcome back defender Danny Higginbotham, who has been struggling for two weeks with an ankle problem.
Manager John Gregory will decide whether to bring Paul Boertien back into defence or stick with Pablo Mills, who was given his first start in Saturday's defeat at Reading.

Cole May Play In Cup

Chelsea will allow Carlton Cole to play for Wolves in Sunday’s FA Cup match against Newcastle if they get knocked out, they are playing their 3rd round tie a day earlier on Saturday against Middlesborough.
Wolves boss Dave Jones said on WOW: “Obviously Chelsea are hoping to progress to the next round but, if they don’t, there would be no point in preventing Carlton from being cup-tied. Whilst it would be bad news for Chelsea to lose to Boro, with two of our senior strikers injured it would be a help to us. So we appreciate the offer.
“We will have 24 hours notice to make a decision about our own team selection.”

Injury Update

Wolves are facing a striker shortage with news that Dean Sturridge is facing six weeks on the sidelines and Goerge Ndah has come down with the flu. Sturridge had a scan which confirmed he has torn fibres in his calf muscle at the junction of his Achillies. He has been told to wear a special immobilising boot and will see the specialists before he can start a rehabilitation programme.
This puts added pressure on Wolves especially for the FA Cup 3rd round match with Newcastle because Chelsea won't let him play as they don't want him cup tied.

Cole Loan Extended

Wolves have confirmed that Chelsea are letting Carlton Cole stay at Molineux for a further month.
Boss Dave Jones wanted to keep Cole as cover for injured Nathan Blake who is injured and not expected to be fit until well into January.
Chelsea boss Claudio Ranieri is a huge admirer of the talented Cole and believes the loan spell will aid his development as the England Under-20 international is behind Eidur Gudjohnsen, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Gianfranco Zola in the striking pecking order at Stamford Bridge.
Cole's initial month loan was due to end after Wolves' New Years Day clash with Derby but Cole will now remain at Molineux until 1st February, but he is unlikely to be given permission to play in the FA Cup third-round clash with Newcastle as the Blues do not what him cup-tied for what they hope will be a successful run in the competition.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones remains in a defiant mood, but he said: "It was a poor performance. We did not put our chances away and we got caught out.
"After we had got back into the game we went to sleep again.
"You have got to take advantage of the chances when they come your way. We did not play well.
"It needed an effort from everyone and one of two of the players shirked things.
"I have told the players what I think. We all need to keep going and keep believing."
Jones is well aware his own position will come into focus if he cannot turn things around but he added: "The first person I look at it myself.
"I am a fighter and a scrapper and you have to keep going. Changing people is not always the answer.
"We have to prove that this run is a blip. I am expecting criticism and I know there is nowhere to hide at this club.
"There are still points to play for and if we have to try and win promotion by going through the play-offs that is what we will have to do."

Team News

Bradford: Boss Nicky Law has named an unchanged squad for their trip to Molineux and has no fresh injury worries.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones branded his team's first half performance against Burnley as "inept" - then admitted their fightback came too late as they lost 2-1 at Turf Moor.
This was Wolves' first defeat at Burnley since 1963 and Jones was unimpressed with the way they played at times.
He said: "We did nothing right in the first half and it was very frustrating to say the least. It was inept. We came back strongly after the break and on another day could possibly have got a point.
"We haven't won in three games now and although results around us continue to go in our favour we have to learn how to help ourselves - how many opportunities do you need?"

Melligan Out On Loan

Wolves young midfielder JJ Melligan could be staying at Kidderminster on loan until the end of the season, but the long-term loan scheme, has yet to be finalised. Melligan went to Aggborough in September, and was called back to Molineux last month after injuries and suspensions left Wolves without much choice in midfield, he made two appearances when he returned.
On Saturday he scored a late goal as Harriers won 2-0 at Wrexham, his seventh of the season from 14 appearances.

Team News

Burnley: are still without Steve Davis (knee), while Lee Briscoe (groin) and Paul Cook (shoulder) are almost certainly out. Alan Moore could be in contention for a starting place after overcoming injury to play 45 minutes against Gillingham.

Wolves: could be without on-loan striker Carlton Cole as he's struggling with a slight calf strain. Defender Mohamed Camara returned to full training last week following knee surgery earlier this season, and could be in line for a place on the bench but striker Nathan Blake is still out.

23rd December 2002

Experienced Striker Search

Wolves boss Dave Jones has confirmed he is looking for an "experienced" loan striker after it was confirmed that striker Nathan Blake will be out for another six weeks at least.
Carlton Cole's one-month loan spell is due to expire after the game with Derby on New Year's Day, but he was substituted in the 58th minute against Millwall after suffering a calf injury.
Jones was going to speak to Chelsea about extending Cole's stay, but with Cole unlikely to play before his loan runs out, he says he will be in the hunt for a hitman with more experience.
Dave Jones said: "The lad was feeling his calf and we decided to take him off but the boy did well he had one good chance.
"I felt that we were missing Blakey's experience out there today.
"He won't be ready for another six weeks or so.
""We have got Carlton until the New Year, so we'll probably be looking around for a striker again, maybe someone with a little more experience."

22nd December 2002

Loan Extension Talks

Next week Wolves will be speaking to Chelsea about keeping young striker Carlton Cole because after his loan ends after the Derby game on New Year's day.
Cole scored on his Molineux debut, but didn't make an impact against Coventry last Saturday because of being away with the England under 20 international team and yesterday limped off.
Cole is providing cover for the injured Nathan Blake who won't be back in action until after the New Year so Dave Jones will want to extend his stay at Molineux.
The boss said on WOW: "We haven’t talked it over with Chelsea yet but we are going to speak to them next week to see where we go from here.
"We would like to have him longer, but with the heavy fixture period coming up Chelsea might want him back.
"We wouldn’t want them to say we can keep him then have them pull him back because they get illnesses or injuries that leaves them short.
"He’s enjoyed his time here with us. He didn't have such a good game last weekend but his preparation wasn’t the best having been away with England.
"Obviously we need cover as Nathan is going to be out for a while longer yet but we will have to wait to see what Chelsea’s position is."

Match Reaction

Wolves boss said after Wolves drew with Millwall: "The game was there to be won.
"We should have made it very comfortable for ourselves. Once we got in front we didn't hammer home the authority we had in the game. We gave them hope.
"They kept fighting and battling but really with the chances we had we should have killed them.
"I can't blame my strikers. If they are not there when the ball is coming into the box, then you have a right good moan, but I can't do that for missing chances.
"I felt at the end that they were waiting for us to score because they were hanging on a bit.
"Mark will buy me an extra beer today because they got out of jail."

Team News

Millwall: Neil Harris and David Livermore are suspended and Ben May is out with shin splints. Richard Sadlier has yet to return from a hip injury, so manager Mark McGhee must choose whether to hand youngster Kevin Braniff his second start of the season or push Paul Ifill up front.
Defender Mark Phillips could be available although he has not trained this week through illness, but winger Christophe Kinet is out with a knee injury.

Wolves: midfielder Paul Ince is in contention for a place in the starting line-up after recovering from a toe injury, striker George Ndah could be named in the squad after coming through reserve games following the gashed leg he sustained in the game against Portsmouth at the beginning of November.

19th December 2002

Ince Should Be Fit

Paul Ince should be available for Wolves match at Millwall on Saturday. Ince had the big toenail of his right foot removed last week and was forced to sit out Saturday’s defeat against Coventry.
Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "The toe was very sore and inflamed after the nail had been taken away.
"But a few days of rest seems to have done the trick and Paul trained with the squad yesterday.
"He hasn’t reported any ill affects this morning although it’s still a bit sore which I suppose is only natural.
"But it isn’t enough to stop him training and he is out with the rest of the boys at the moment.
"I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t available for selection for Saturday’s game."

FA Cup Ticket News

Wolves have put up the 'Sold Out' notices today for the FA Cup third round match against Newcastle Utd.
18,200 season ticket holders have their tickets reserved and Newcastle have been allocated 3,000 seats in the lower tier of the John Ireland Stand, which left 7,000 tickets that were sold to members and the general public.
Wolves seem certain to break their gate receipts record of £319,141 for the FA Cup fourth round tie with Arsenal in 1999, on top of the £265,000 Sky purse.
Season ticket holders seats are reserved until Saturday 28th December and if they are not claimed they will go on sale on 30th December.

18th December 2002

Friendly Cancelled

Wolves were forced to cancel their practice match with Shrewsbury today because the training ground pitches were frozen.
Boss Dave Jones was hoping to give a game to players who are returning after injuries, including George Ndah and Ludovic Pollet.
Instead some of the squad used the new £700,000 indoor training arena at Aldersley Leisure Village which opened last week.
Dave Jones said: "It's a shame that the game has had to be called off but unfortunately it is just one of those things that you can't do a lot about."

17th December 2002

Youth Results

Both Wolves youth teams drew at the weekend.  The under 19s traveled to Man City and drew 2-2. Ryan Mahon gave Wolves the lead after 26 minutes with a shot from 30-yards. Ten minutes after half-time Man City equalised. In the 61st minute Man City scored from a highly dubious penalty, but but Wolves equalised after Leon Clarke had a shot parried by the City goalkeeper. A defender picked up the loose ball and before he could clear it, Clarke dispossessed him and found the back of the net from ten-yards.
The under 17s traveled to Birmingham and drew 1-1. Wolves took the lead in the 16th minute Mark Davies with a 25-yard drive. But Birmingham leveled the score through a penalty after 63 minutes.

16th December 2002

Rae Ban

Wolves midfielder Alex Rae picked up his fifth booking of the season during the 2-0 defeat to Coventry and will now miss Bradford's visit to Molineux on Saturday 28th December.
Rae has missed only one other game this season through injury, Wolves boss Dave Jones will be hoping to have Paul Ince back in the team and fully recovered from his toe injury.

15th December 2002

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones said after the match: "It was the perfect smash and grab. Coventry scored two cracking goals but I don't know what else they did.
"They didn't extend us on the break and, when they scored their second, they went even deeper. We needed to score to draw them out.
"We needed a bit of luck but, credit to them, they did well at the back. They came with a plan and it worked.
"We're frustrated and annoyed because we know we are better than that and we feel we have thrown three points away. We had good chances and didn't make the keeper make saves."

The manager at Hillsborough Chris Turner is the former Molineux youth coach so he's already coached Proudlock. Michael Branch was also supposed to be joining The Owls, but he turned down the move.
Wolves Boss Dave Jones said on WOW: "As I’ve said many times, loan deals like this one can only be of benefit to young players like Adam.

FA Cup Draw

Wolves have drawn Newcastle United at Molineux in the Third Round of the FA Cup, the match will be played on the 4th or 5th of January.

Match Reaction

Wolves boss Dave Jones was delighted with the performance that restored his club to the First Division's top six, he said: "We have to remember we're asking a 19-year-old to step into the shoes of a 29-year-old and do the same things.
"But Carlton gives us a different dimension up there to what we have had since Nathan Blake was injured. You need a buffer up there; someone to hold onto the ball and let other players get forward.
"It was great for him to score and, if I could speak good Italian, I would ask Claudio Ranieri if I could have him for three months. But we will see how this month goes and take it from there.
"He has shown what a quality player he is, even if you would crucify a more senior player on occasions for losing the ball once or twice."

Proudlock Loan Move

Wolves striker Adam Proudlock was in talks today with Sheffield Wednesday about a loan move. Owls boss Chris Turner who coached Proudlock in the Wolves youth team, confirmed he was trying to borrow the 21-year-old striker to provide fresh impetus to their relegation battle.
Proudlock returned last week from a loan spell at Second Division Tranmere but got injured on his Wolves reserves comeback and missed last night's second string win at Rovers.

Wolves maybe reluctant to let him go because Nathan Blake is out injured and Dean Sturridge is still not 100% fit.

Reserves Win

Wolves reserves came back from being 2-0 down to beat Tranmere Rovers 3-2 at Prenton Park yesterday.
Tranmere took the lead in the 24th minute from a corner, the Wolves defence failed to clear and Andy Robinson hooked the ball home from close range. Tranmere went two up after 42 minutes from free kick on the edge of the penalty area, Paul Robinson curled his free kick round the wall and beyond  Oakes.
Straight from the second half kick off Andrews made a powerful run and scored from 25-yards out with only 22 seconds gone on the clock. Branch's Back

Transfer-listed striker Michael Branch has returned to Molineux after completing two months on loan at Hull. The two clubs are now arguing over the proposed permanent move of Branch, Hull chairman Adam Pearson launched an attack on Wolves for demanding a fee after claiming a free transfer had been agreed.

He said: "Michael Branch's loan ended with no agreement for a permanent transfer being reached with Wolves.
"The request from Wolves for a fee has made the deal impossible. Hull are not prepared to complete the deal as a principal because a deal we believed had been agreed as a free transfer has now been changed at the 11th hour.
"Secondly, I will not sanction any deal that threatens the financial equilibrium of the club.
"When the agent's fee and transfer fee are added to the equation the package is too great a commitment."

Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey replied with: "At no time have I had a conversation with Adam Pearson where a free transfer was discussed.
"When I met him before the League chairmen's meeting in Oxford he said to me 'I'm going to have to rustle up some money for Branch aren't I?' and I said 'yes'.
"We spoke yesterday and I reminded him of our previous conversation. So for Adam Pearson to say he would come for free it can only have come from another source, like the player's agent.
"It's simply a ploy to get Michael Branch out of Wolves for nothing and that's not going to happen.
"Knowing what Branch would sign for I can't believe this would break the bank or undermine Hull."

Wolves midfielder JJ Meligan is to return to Kidderminster for another months loan, he was recalled when Wolves had an injury crisis, but now Andrews and Kennedy are back and Cameron is close to returning to full fitness.

3rd December 2002

A mistake by Walsall keeper Coleman saw Wolvse get their second, his attempted clearance was charged down by Gary Mulligan who put the ball into the empty net.
Just before half-time Gobern scored Wolves third in the 44th minute, a superb volley into the opposite corner of the net after the Walsall defence failed to clear.
Wolves scored their fourth five minutes from time, Michael Townsend powered home a header from Flynn’s right-wing corner.

Match Reaction

Wolves manager Dave Jones said defensively Wolves were magnificent and said: "We always knew it was going to be difficult coming here.
"Defensively we were spot-on and we never looked in any danger. But going forward we never got hold of the ball and we never put Rotherham under any sustained pressure."
