Transfer Update
Ioan Ganea has been granted a
work permit. The 30-year-old international forward has signed a short-term
deal until the end of the season after his contract with Turkish outfit
Bursaspor was cancelled.
Ganea said on WOW:
"The manager says I might play on Saturday.
I am very happy to be here with the chance to play in the Premier League.
"I have spoken about it with Adrian Mutu who I play alongside for
Romania. He is happy that I have come here.
"I hope I can score goals for Wolves and help the club to stay
up."
On loan midfielder Hassan
Kachloul has appealed to Wolves boss Dave Jones not to send him back to
Aston Villa when his loan spell expires on the 17th January.
Morocco international Kachloul has been frozen out at Villa Park and wants
to stay with Wolves for the rest of the season to boost their bid to avoid
relegation.
"I don't know what the future holds but I would like to stay at
Wolves," said Kachloul, who was brought to England by Wolves boss Dave
Jones from the French club Metz when he was in charge at Southampton.
"I have been accepted at Wolves. Everyone has been nice to me and I
want to do well here.
"If the opportunity comes to stay until the end of the season then I
will take it."
Kachloul, 30, who joined Villa on a free transfer from Southampton in July
2001, will leave Villa Park next summer when his contract expires.
He was signed by John Gregory but has struggled to figure in the plans of
either Graham Taylor or David O'Leary.
His last first-team appearance for Villa was in the Intertoto Cup back in
July 2002.
Kachloul added: "When John Gregory left, Villa did not want to play me.
"It had nothing to do with ability, it was someone, I won't say who,
saying I wasn't allowed to play."
Wolves midfielder Kevin Cooper
has joined Sunderland on trial with a view to signing the midfielder on a
three-month contract.
Cooper is expected to join the Black Cats for training on New Year's Day,
but the 28-year-old would not be eligible for Saturday's FA Cup third-round
clash with Hartlepool at the Stadium of Light.
Wolves boss Dave Jones paid £1m for Cooper from Wimbledon in March 2002,
but the left-sided player has now been deemed surplus to requirements after
making just one appearance so far this season.

Transfer News
Wolves have signed Ioan Viorel
Ganea on loan until the end of the season - subject to him receiving a work
permit and international clearance.
The 30-year-old Romania international passed a medical on Monday, and Wolves
have until noon on Friday to complete his registration and make him eligible
Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at Kidderminster.
Ganea made a name for himself with VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga, where he
scored 34 goals in 106 appearances over four seasons before moving to
Turkish League Bursaspor last summer.
Ganea has won 40 caps and scored 19 goals for Romania and played alongside
Chelsea striker Adrian Mutu in all eight of his country's unsuccessful group
two qualifying games for Euro 2004 - scoring four goals.
Although Ganea's move to Molineux is initially until the end of the current
campaign, the club's official website claims the player will earn a 12-month
extension to his contract, providing Wolves stay up and he makes a set
number of appearances.
Guatemala striker Carlos Ruiz
will sign for Wolves this week on a three-month loan deal.
The 24-year-old has been playing for Los Angeles Galaxy and is enjoying a
rich vein of form.
Ruiz has scored 15 times in 25 starts for Galaxy in their April to November
season having scored 24 goals in 26 games during 2002.
A regular for his national team, Ruiz will fulfill an ambition by joining
Wolves because he has been hoping for the chance to make his mark in English
football for some time.
Wolves striker Dean Sturridge
has signed for Sheffield United on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
Sturridge, 30, has agreed to join the Blades for an initial three-month loan
spell, but Blades boss Neil Warnock is confident the former Derby and
Leicester forward will want a permanent deal.
"I think he will enjoy our way of playing," said Warnock.
"And I'm hopeful we might be able to do something permanent if things
work out right.
"He has plenty of pace and is a goalscorer and we create chances, so
I'm sure he will get plenty of opportunities in front of goal."
Warnock confirmed he is still waiting to hear from another club over an
offer he has made for a second unnamed player.

Match Reaction
Wolves boss Dave Jones, though,
was understandably delighted with a result he felt was merited given the
level of performance.
"If we had come away with anything less than three points then we would
have been disappointed," he said.
"We did our usual start by giving them an early goal, but you earn your
luck in this game, and we got a break with their own-goal.
"After that it was one big wave against them, which we kept going in
the second half and we came out of it with another goal.
"They had their 10 minutes, but we weathered it and I'm delighted for
the boys because no-one has let their head go down.
"The only thing we didn't get that I demanded was a clean sheet, but if
you look at what they have it wasn't so long ago they were playing in Europe
and everything else.
"We have had to do a good shift against a strong side, but we kept
going and now we live to fight another day."

Transfer News
Los Angeles striker Carlos Ruiz
is reported to have flown out of California on Saturday night to
head to England for what is understood to be a three-month loan deal with
Wolves.
Sources have indicated that the Galaxy top scorer left his Christmas
vacation, in his home country of Guatemala, to fly out of Los Angeles, and
has already been pencilled in for a New Year debut.
Ruiz will head back to the States in time for the start of the ninth
MLS season with Los Angeles, which kicks off in April.
He has no problems with a
work permit due to being an ever-present with Guatemala, but recently saw interest from
Leicester City fade due to his complex contractual situation. Ruiz is
co-owned by MLS and his former club in Guatemala - Municipal.
MLS headquarters in New York City have not been able to confirm the
information at this time, but sources have been backed up by reports that
are starting to surface in Central America.
Ruiz scored 15 goals for Los
Angeles in a poor 2003 showing for the Californian club, who never
recovered from having to play eight away matches in a row at the start of
the campaign, as they completed work on their brand new, purpose built
28,000 seat stadium after moving out of The Rose Bowl.
The pint-sized striker is renowned for his spectacular goals and lightning
pace.

Team News
Wolves: boss Dave Jones is
unlikely to make mass changes for the visit of Leeds though he will almost
certainly pick a more attacking line-up after starting with Kenny Miller as
a lone front man at Highbury.
Steffen Iversen and Dean Sturridge will both be pushing for a starting
place, though Denis Irwin and Nathan Blake are set to miss out through
injury once again, and Alex Rae is suspended after picking up five yellow
cards.
Leeds: boss Eddie Gray
has a selection headache after Dominic Matteo limped out of the 0-0 Boxing
Day draw with Villa with a thigh injury.
The Leeds skipper is almost certain to miss out, but with David Batty
suspended for the trip to the Midlands, the Yorkshire outfit have few
midfield options to turn to.
Stephen McPhail will almost certainly step in for a clash that neither of
the bottom two can realistically afford to lose.
Match Reaction
Wolves boss Dave Jones slammed
his side's defending as he faced up to a new year battle to beat the drop.
"The first two goals were hard to swallow," he said. "The
first was a set play and we should have done better, while the second was
just ridiculous and the third was harsh on us.
"We give teams a leg-up and just can't do that. For their second, Jody
got the ball stuck under his feet when he had to pass it back to the keeper.
"He worked hard apart from that but the mistake he made cost us a goal.
"Jody held his hands up as he knew he was in the wrong. Errors like
that are the ones we have to stop."
Jones vowed his players would
keep their spirits up despite being adrift at the foot of the table.
"We had one or two good chances to score but it doesn't take a rocket
scientist to work out we're scoring too few and conceding too many," he
said.
"We're getting a harsh lesson at the moment but my players have never
let their heads drop."

Arsenal: Ashley Cole is

his absence could hand a chance to Jeremie Aliadiere.
Lauren will figure in the two Christmas games, but Wenger has not yet
announced when the Cameroon international will feature.
Wolves: Denis Irwin is

strain, which gives ex-gooner Oleg Luzhny a place against his former club.
Nathan Blake will not feature in the next week as he is still suffering from
a calf injury.
Transfer News
Wolves boss Dave Jones has been
linked with a move for Sunderland full-back Michael Gray to shore up his
leaky defence.
The 29-year-old has made just two starts for Sunderland this season and they
are keen to cash in on him.
Jones is known to have already held transfer talks with a mystery player as
he battles to keep Wolves in the top flight.
Gray is currently on a
three-month loan at Celtic which expires at the end of the month.
Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy told the Scottish Daily Express: "It
looks very much like Michael is on his way back to us.
"I don't know what the future holds for Michael but it certainly isn't
at Celtic.
"They have made no moves or shown any inclination that they want to
keep him so he will be coming back to Sunderland."

Ince Wants To Be Inter Guvnor
Wolves midfielder Paul Ince has
said he wants to go into management when he retires and dreams of coaching
Inter Milan. Ince who is 36, had two
seasons with the Serie A giants between 1995 and 1997 and was popular with
the Inter fans.
He said "I see myself as a
manager, being in charge of Inter Milan would be my dream, job.
"I'm not kidding. I speak the language and though I know I'm going to
have to serve my time first, finishing up as boss of Inter would be the one
for me."
"One of my few regrets is leaving Milan.
"I definitely want to be a boss and accept that I will have to go
through the ranks like Tony Adams.
"You can get lucky - just luck at Chris Coleman at Fulham.
"I'd like to think that if I managed abroad I could drum a bit of the
English mentality into players."
Rae Voted Top Again
Midfielder Alex Rae has received
the Jimmy Mullen Memorial Trophy award for the second year running. The
winner of the award is the one who polls the highest number of votes cast by
local schoolchildren and Rae came out on top for the 2002/03 campaign.
Joan Mullin the widow of the late great Jimmy presented the trophy to Rae.
He said on WOW:
“Obviously I never saw Jimmy play but I know how highly thought of he was
in Wolverhampton and what a part he played in the great days of the fifties
when this club was absolutely flying.
“It’s a great honour for me and I’d like to thank Joan along with all
the schoolchildren who have voted for me.”

Jez Denies Press Rumour
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey
has denied being approached for the job of chief executive at Aston Villa.
There were stories in the Sunday press saying that he was being targeted for
the post at the Birmingham club. He said on WOW:
"I have not been approached by Aston Villa, by a recruitment agency or
by any other club. I am fully committed to my role at Wolverhampton
Wanderers."
Transfer News
The Romanian press are reporting
that Wolves have handed a trial to Ioan Ganea, the former Stuttgart striker
is available for nothing after leaving Turkish side Bursaspor.
Romania international Ganea had his contract cancelled by Bursaspor
following the resignation of his compatriot Gheorghe Hagi as manager in
November.
Wolves have already taken the opportunity to take a look at another
Romanian, Adrian Ilie this season, but decided against bringing in the
player.
Ganea is a regular member of the Romanian side, and Wolves boss Dave Jones
is desperate to bring in someone who can score goals.
Wolves midfielder JJ Melligan
has had his loan extended by Doncaster Rovers boss Dave Penney.
The 21-year-old came to the end of his first month on loan after Friday
night's win over Swansea City, which took Rovers to the top of Division
Three.
Dave Penney said: "We've done it for another month. He's got two goals
in four games and he's done very well for us.
"We've now got Fran Tierney pushing for a place in the side so we've
got some good strength across the middle."
21st December 2003
Postponement Reaction
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey
thinks that the Molineux pitch would have been fit enough by 3pm to play the
match. He claimed that groundstaff could have got the pitch ready for action
had Knight delayed his inspection.
He said: "We understand
that the referee has a difficult decision to make but from what I saw of the
forecast there is due to be no more rain this afternoon, although we have
been deluged since around 5am.
"I can see why, at the time of making this decision, the referee felt
the game couldn't take place but we feel that by 3pm the pitch would have
been playable.
"It is very disappointing for everyone, particularly the near 30,000
supporters that were on their way to Molineux for the game.
"Everyone wanted to play, it was a big game for both sides and perhaps
if officials had waited a little longer to carry out the inspection then it
would have been a different story.
"But, in these situations my opinion doesn't matter. It is the referee
who makes the call and we have to accept it."
Ref Knight insists that he had
little option other than to call the game off. He said: "It was not a
hard decision to make at all. The ball was not moving at all and there was
the forecast of more rain to come.
"It's always tough to have to call a game off but on this occasion
there was no other option."
Wolves boss Dave Jones was
disappointed with the decision but was prepared to accept it.
He said: "We tried as hard as we could to get it on but it just didn't
happen. We have a problem with the pitch and when the rain is as heavy as it
has been this morning the water is retained.
"We brought in a special sponging machine but with it still being
raining the water was going back on the pitch as soon as we took it off. I
rang Gerard (Houllier) who was on the coach not far from the ground and told
him that we had tried everything to keep the game on.
"We both would have wanted to have played so it's disappointing but,
the ball just wouldn't roll. I am sad for all the fans who have
travelled."

Wolves v Liverpool Postponed
This afternoon's Premier League
match with Liverpool has been called off by referee Barry Knight due to a
waterlogged pitch. It had been raining heavily all morning and the match
officials held a pitch inspection at 1.30pm. The rain had actually stopped
by the time of the inspection and a large roller had arrived to mop up the
residue water, but the damage had already been done.
There has been no announcement yet about when the game will be played.
Match In Doubt
At 1.30pm this afternoon there
will be a formal pitch inspection at Molineux. Heavy rain all morning has
taken its toll on the pitch and now this afternoon's match with Liverpool is
in doubt.

Team News
Wolves:
defender Denis Irwin faces a late fitness test on the hamstring strain he
picked up against Aston Villa last week.
Norwegian striker Steffen Iversen has recovered from a thigh injury and
could return to the starting line-up as Nathan Blake is out with a similar
problem.
Liverpool: Harry Kewell
will miss the trip to Wolves on Saturday after loosing the race to be fit
from an ankle injury.
Salif Diao is the latest addition to boss Houllier's injury list, with the
likes of Michael Owen, Jamie Carragher, Milan Baros and Steve Finnan all
still unavailable.
Stephane Henchoz completed the full 90 minutes during the reserves and he
will travel to Molineux but is unlikely to start.
Sir Jack Has Retired
Wolves released the following
statement on WOW this
morning:
Sir Jack Hayward has retired
as chairman and director of Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club.
In a move that underlined his repeated desire to see younger and fresher
faces at the helm, Sir Jack made his announcement at last Friday’s board
meeting. His son Rick was unanimously elected as the new chairman. Sir Jack
will remain as club president.
Jack Harris, who joined Wolves in 1986 and served as chairman from 1988 to
1992, also retired as a director and was elected Wolves’ first vice
president.
Sir Jack, who took over as chairman from his son Jonathan in 1997, initially
announced that he wanted to step down from the helm in Septeber - four
months after seeing Wanderers finally promoted to the top flight.
The 80-year-old Bahamian-based businessman had been seeking a consortium of
local investors to take over and plough around £40m into the club, with the
guarantee that all outstanding debts (approximately £39m) would be wiped
out. But with no one locally, nationally or internationally coming forward,
Sir Jack, who has invested £70m of his personal fortune into Wolves, has
handed over the reins to his elder son.
Rick, aged 51, will now look for individual investors to join him in taking
the club forward. He says: "My father has invested a fantastic amount
of time, money and emotion over the years to get Wolves into the
Premiership. After seeing his dream come true last May he has decided it is
time to hand the club on.
"No one has made a serious bid so my father – who cares very deeply
about the future of Wolves – felt the best decision would be to step down
and allow me to begin a search for individual investors to help us build for
the future.
"I am hugely excited by the challenge of taking Wolves forward. It’s
a massive task but I want to assure supporters that I am taking on the role,
not in a temporary capacity, but with the absolute intention of bringing
Wolves the success its supporters deserve.
"We haven’t enjoyed a good start to life in the Premiership but there
is time to turn things around. Top flight football is and will always be our
main aim."
Sir Jack added: "It’s time for a younger man to take up the
challenge. It has been a fantastic privilege and honour for me to have
served 13 years as president and then chairman of this great club but I am
80 years old and now someone else should take up the torch and lead Wolves
into the future."

Butler Waits For FA Hearing
Wolves defender Paul Butler is
going to have to wait until the new year before facing the FA over the
tunnel bust-up at Middlesbrough in November.
Butler has been charged with using threatening and abusive language and with
improper conduct following the fixture at The Riverside Stadium.
But Wolves have demanded a personal hearing and have vowed to fight tooth
and nail to get the charges dropped.
Boss Dave Jones was in the tunnel at the time with the players and he has
made it clear just who was at fault, and he will be giving evidence to the
hearing.
Jones has been working with Professional Footballers' Association on the
charges against Butler and he is hoping to arrange a preliminary hearing
with the FA before the end of the year to discuss the accusation before a
full hearing in January.

Kaebi
Loan Update
According to Iranian sources
Hossein Kaebi has done enough to secure a loan move to Wolves, but his move
could be scuppered by work permit problems. The Foulad Khuzestan midfielder
has been on trial at Molineux but is now back in Tehran.
"Wolves asked me to play a
friendly for them," Kaebi revealed. "But I have problems with my
passport.
"They have very strict rules there, even for a friendly I needed my
club's permission, but the affairs were not arranged in Tehran.
"I was approved of by almost everyone there but I won't play without a
permit.
"Wolves have already made up their mind. They asked me to play on loan
for six months and they have offered me a very eye-catching sum of money.
"But I am sure that Foulad will object. The club can't agree with my
transfer without receiving a sum in advance.
"I am not the one to decide. My agent and the club's manager have to
make a decision. Even Mr Jalali (his agent) told the Wolverhampton officials
that I have no right to comment."
The experience will certainly
stand teenage talent Kaebi in good stead should any move to England
materialise.
"Their training sessions were really tough," he told Iranmania.com.
"For someone who has never played in a European club.
"Their disciplinary rules are indeed excellent. Their facilities are a
world apart from what we have in Iran.
"The team-mates were quite kind to me. I also heard Jones talking with
the press about me.
"He told them that he is satisfied with me, but he still needs to
evaluate my performance in a friendly."
Goalkeeper Update
Goalkeeper Matt Murray may not
be able return to light training in the New Year after a scan showed that
the broken bone in his foot is showing only a slight improvement.
He has played just two first team games in the current season, being
sidelined first by a back problem and then the foot injury.
So Wolves have had loan keeper
Andy Marshall stay at Molineux extended until the 31st December. The club
was granted permission to keep the goalkeeper by the Premier League
yesterday, due to the ongoing injury to Matt Murray. The confirmation led
Wolves to enter into talks with Ipswich Town over an extension to his loan
which will now run until the transfer window opens again at the start of
January.

Youth Results
Wolves under 19s were beaten 1-0
by Blackburn Rovers at Compton Park on Saturday and the under 17s drew 2-2
at Nottingham Forest.
The only goal of the under 19s
game came just seven minutes from the end, the Wolves keeper was beaten by a
shot that hit one of his own defenders and was deflected into the net.
The under 17s went 1-0 down in
the second minute from a penatly. Wolves equalised through Tom Stewart in
the 65th minute when the striker curled a shot into the top corner.
Ten minutes later Stewart turned to creator when his through ball put
Stephen Thomson through on goal and a cool finish saw Wolves winning 2-1.
But in the 84th minute when a Forest shot cross fell to Daniel Jones who
completely miskicked his clearance slicing the ball into the net.
Rae Banned
Wolves leading goalscorer Alex
Rae is out for the crunch Premiership clash with fellow strugglers Leeds.
The midfielder received his fifth booking of the season during the 3-2
defeat at Aston Villa on Sunday after a skirmish with former Sunderland
team-mate Gavin McCann, who also got shown a yellow card.
Rae must now serve an automatic one-match suspension for the clash with
Leeds on the 28th December.
£3m For January Transfers
Wolves boss Dave Jones has been
told by the Molineux directors that he has just £3m to spend in January
when the transfer window reopens.
Jones had already written his shopping list of players to help keep Wolves
in the Premiership, with a new striker, attacking midfielder and goalkeeper
on his wanted list.
But now that he knows how much cash is in his transfer kitty he may have to
re-evaluate his priorities, and as the players he wants are experienced
professionals, he also faces stiff competition to secure their signatures.
The Boss said: "I'm going to be facing all sorts of problems because
the players I want are going to be wanted by three or four other clubs.
"The you have to try and arrange satisfactory deal with the men
themselves and with their clubs.
"It's not going to be easy, and despite doing our homework, we will
find it hard getting the players I want."
15th December 2003
Match Reaction
Wolves boss Dave Jones said
after the match: "If we keep giving goals away like that, we are not
going to get anything. We don't give ourselves a platform to go on from.
"All the goals were stoppable and the first and third were definitely
the sort we should not be conceding.
"At half-time we had just got back into the game and could push on from
there but then we concede a third bad goal.
"We then got up a head of steam and they are hanging on for their lives
but we do keep leaving ourselves with a mountain to climb.
"We scored two goals away at Tottenham and now at Villa and when you do
that you should be getting things from the games.
"I can't fault the players for their effort and determination. They ran
themselves into the ground but we can't keep giving these stupid goals away.
You shouldn't be letting them in at any level of the game."

Aston Villa: welcome back
Ronny Johnsen to the squad, with the defender being told that surgery is not
necessary on a pelvic problem.
Lee Hendrie and Mark Kinsella are suspended and wil not be available.
Wolves: Nathan Blake has

striker suffered a calf injury during last weekend’s match against
Tottenham and was substituted shortly after half-time. So the boss has a
decision to make over who will replace Blake. Both Kenny Miller and Dean
Sturridge had good run outs in the reserve and first teams respectively this
week.
Dave Jones is waiting on Steffen Iversen who has returned to full training.

Silas Reports Denied
Dave Jones has rubbished reports
claiming Silas wants to leave Molineux in January and get back to first-team
football in his home country, Portugal.
Portuguese newspapers reported that he is unhappy at his situation at
Molineux and two clubs have already expressed an interest in him, Sporting
Braga and Leiria are interested on taking him on loan.
Boss Dave Jones spoke about claims in the press this week, which suggested
the Portuguese international is unhappy at Wolves, during his pre-match
press conference for this weekend’s trip to Aston Villa.
He said on WOW:"The
best way to describe what has been printed in this case is a
misinterpretation.
"Silas was asked a question by the Portuguese press and he said that
all he wants to do is play football. He told the reporter that he is happy
here at Wolves.
"He was later asked if he would consider moving back to Portugal on
loan if he fails to break into the first team and the boy, understandably,
said that that would be an option he could look at if that happens.
"If all that means he’s unhappy and is looking for a way out of
Wolves then fine but we don’t think it does.
"Of course we want to keep Jorge here. The boy just needs to settle
properly. You can look at Man United having paid multi-millions for Ronaldo
and then there’s talk of him not settling either.
"They just need time. It has taken Jorge longer than expected to adjust
to our game but then he was thrown in at the deep end when he first arrived,
what with all the injuries and everything, so maybe that was a bit too much
at the time. But, he’s been working very hard in training and he’s put
in some very good performances for the reserves so I am happy with his
progress."

Blake To Retire From
Internationals
Wolves striker Nathan Blake is
to announce his retirement from international football, he will be 32
in January and has dropped down the pecking order in Wales manager Mark
Hughes's eyes behind John Hartson, Craig Bellamy and Robert Earnshaw.
Blake hasn't yet informed Mark Hughes but the Molineux man insists he will
not be talked out of his decision, despite drawing England in the 2006 World
Cup qualifiers.
He said: "They will be two
fantastic games (against England), but it's hypothetical for me because I'm
retiring.
"It's something I've been thinking about for a while."
Blake scored a total of four
goals in 23 games for his country.

Camara Receives Award
Wolves forward Henri Camara has
been named Senegal's 2003 Footballer of the Yearn and has vowed to shoot
Wolves out of the relegation zone.
The 26-year-old striker has scored just once tis season after his £1.5m
purchase from Sedan. But the pacy front-man is not short on confidence and
believes this latest award could kick-start his campaign.
Camara said: ''The award will
give me the extra confidence I need to help Wolves out of their current bad
spell.
''Luck has deserted me this season, I get chances in every game but can't
manage to convert them.
''It is tough. Wolves have players who are serving their apprenticeship in
the Premier League. We are poorly placed, but we will not give up."
The team also received an award
when Wolves were named as Team of the Year in BBC Television’s Midlands
Sports Awards evening at The Belfrey. Goalkeeper Matt Murray also scooped
the Breakthrough award.
The team award for last season’s promotion, was accepted on behalf of the
club by Alex Rae who was joined for the evening by teammates Joleon Lescott
and Matt Murray, and coach Terry Connor.

Wolves reserves their first win of the season against Newcastle United.
Miller's first came in the 30th
minute, Keith Andrews hit a shot from 25-yards that hit the underside of the
bar and Miller beat Bartlett to the rebound and headed past the keeper.
Miller got his second in the 51st minute Newton’s cross was palmed by the
Newcastle keeper into the path of Miller who made no mistake from close in.

Youth Results
Wolves under 19s moved up to
second place in the table after a 2-1 victory over a Crewe, who had been
beaten just twice in their last 14 games. Also on an adjacent pitch at
Compton, Wolves under 17s beat Derby County 2-1.
The under 19s took the lead
after 15 minutes when Gary Mulligan picked the ball up ten-yards outside the
area, beat his marker and then scored with a low shot.
Their second came after 65 minutes when a corner was only half cleared to
Kevin O’Connor who sent a volley into the top corner of the net.
Crewe pulled one back ten minutes later when Wolves failed to clear
properly.
The under 17s took the lead six
minutes before the interval, Chris Cornes cut in from the right and found
the net with a low left foot shot from the 18-yard line.
Derby equalised in the 65th minute after a Wolves player stopped because he
thought the ball had gone out of play. But the game was allowed to continue
and the ball was squared and they scored.
Wolves got the winner 12 minutes from time when Conor Rafferty sent a nicely
weighted through ball into the path of Tommy Stewart who broke through their
back line and drew the keeper before finishing with a left foot shot.
Keane's Respect For Wolves
Ex-Wolves striker Robbie Keane
has admitted he had mixed emotions about scoring a hat-trick against former
club on Saturday.
He didn't do his trademark somersault celebration out of respect to the team
he joined when he was 15.
Wolves went back to the bottom
of the Premiership after the defeat, but Keane conceded he is desperate for
Dave Jones' men to retain their Premiership status.
He said: "I've mixed
emotions about scoring against Wolves.
"They are a club who mean a lot to me.
"I joined them from Ireland at 15 and they were really good to me.
"The fans were chanting my name and I still have lots of friends in the
Wolverhampton area. I go up there as often as I can.
"I deliberately toned down my celebrations because of my respect for
the club. I didn't want to rub it in.
"Their chairman Sir Jack Hayward is a true gentleman and his dream was
always for Wolves to play in the Premiership.
"He's done that now so I hope they can stay there."
7th December 2003
FA Cup Draw
Wolves have been drawn away at
Division Three side Kidderminster in the third round of the FA Cup.
They will make the short trip to trip to Aggborough on the first weekend in
January, the date isn't yet confirmed.
In the second round Kidderminster beat Conference side Woking 3-0 and
Northwich 2-1 in the first round.
Match Reaction
Dave Jones called on his players
to cut out the individual mistakes if Wolves are to survive in the
Barclaycard Premiership.
Wolves had enough chances against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, but they let
them off the hook and ended up losing 5-2 as Robbie Keane sent his former
club to the bottom of the table with the second hat-trick of his Spurs
career.
"I can't have a go at them
for their commitment and the fact they took the game to Tottenham,"
said Jones. "What I can have a go at is the individual errors and the
fact we did not put our chances away.
"Some of our people need to start learning very quickly at this level,
although it is difficult to have a go at them because although we lost 5-2
we had our fair share of the game.
"It is not as if we played badly, we took the game to them and with our
shape and balance we caused them problems. We just have to stop the
individual mistakes and make sure we score from our chances.
"You cannot give anybody at this level a helping hand and we do that
sometimes. It is frustrating that we won't get the time in this league and
we have a small squad which we have to work with.
"But if they give me the effort and the way they played today, and if
we cut out the errors and put the ball in the back of the net, then we'll
start improving and moving in the right direction."

Rivaldo Bid
Wolves boss Dave Jones has
admitted that he was one of the three Premiership managers who put a bid in
for Rivaldo, and admitted that the World Cup winner was not interested in
the offer.
Jones launched an audacious bid to bring one of the World's best players to
Molineux, when the Brazilian was released from his contract at Milan.
Dave Jones said: ”The answer was pretty much what we expected - Rivaldo
feels he has bigger fish to fry.
"You never get anywhere without asking."
Dave Jones is looking to extend
the loan of Ipswich goalkeeper Andy Marshall, despite him having to pick the
ball out of the net five times on his first team debut in Tuesday’s
Carling Cup defeat at Arsenal.
He said on WOW: “We
will be getting in touch with Joe (Royle) and hoping to extend Andy’s loan
with Wolves.
“He has done well with us and I don’t think he had a chance with any of
the goals on Tuesday. It’s good to know that if anything was to happen to
Michael Oakes, then we would have someone ready to replace him.”
Team News
Tottenham caretaker
manger David Pleat must decide whether to restore leading scorer Freddie
Kanoute or keep faith with Helder Postiga in his line-up for Saturday's
visit of Wolves.
Kanoute missed six matches with an ankle injury but came off the bench on
Wednesday and scored in the Carling Cup win over Manchester City.
But Portuguese striker Postiga scored his first goal for the club in the
same match after 12 games of drawing a blank.
Central defender Dean Richards is a doubt with a thigh strain while Bobby
Zamora is also struggling with an Achilles problem.
Wolves return to North
London for the second time in a week and will be hoping for a better result
than the 5-1 mauling at the hands of Arsenal in the Carling Cup.
Denis Irwin missed the Highbury shambles with a sore toe, and Jones will be
hoping he recovers to add his valuable experience to a back line that was
run ragged on Tuesday night.
Scotland midfielder Colin Cameron is back in training and is pressing for a
first-team recall, and it could be a lucky omen for the Black Country side
as they have yet to win since his two goals inspired their amazing comeback
against Leicester City.
Goalkeeper Matt Murray is still at least two weeks away from being told he
can step up his training, so on-loan Ipswich custodian Andy Marshall looks
set to keep his place.
Striker Steffen Iversen will be unable to put one over his old club
because of a calf problem, while defender Isaac Okoronkwo is out with a
hamstring strain.

Transfer Update
Iranian international Hosein
Kaebi is having a three-week trial at Molineux. The 17-year-old made his
debut for the national team when he was just 16, and he has so far won 15
caps for his country.
He is a tough-tackling midfielder who can also drop back into defence and
plays for Foolad of Khozestran.
Wolves boss Dave Jones may face stiff competition for his signature as a
number of Iranian clubs are also keen on recruiting him.
Wolves boss Dave Jones has insisted
that stiker Dean Sturridge will not be heading out on loan to
Black Country rivals West Brom. Sturridge became a target of Baggies boss
Gary Megson this week, as he was keen to add cover in his Hawthorns squad.
Jones told the Birmingham Post: "Sturridge is not going anywhere.
"We need him here at the moment. We have a lot of work to do."
Kids Through In FA Youth Cup
Wolves’ youngsters are through
to the Fourth round of the FA Youth Cup after an impressive 3-0 win against
Barnsley at Oakwell.
Mark Davies gave Wolves the lead after just 38 seconds, Kevin O’Connor
laid the ball into the path of the 15-year-old who then ran from the edge of
the centre circle to the 18-yard line and buried a low shot into the corner
of the net.
Wolves the got their second in the 63rd minute, Davies lofted a free-kick
into the Barnsley box and O’Connor lashedthe ball into the net via the
underside of the bar.
In the 78th minute Wolves got their third following a mistake by Flinders
who flapped at a Cornes free-kick allowing Michael Townsend to run in on the
blind side to head home.
Wolves have drawn Rotherham at
home for the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup.
Barnsley: Flinders,
Batley, Harban, Atkinson, Laight, Heslop, Till (Jordan 37), Wroe, Vickers,
Jarman, Beevor.

Unused Subs: Hennessy, Rafferty.

Match Reaction
Wolves boss Dave Jones said
after Wolves exit from the Carling Cup: "I am disappointed and
frustrated. We just didn't turn up and you can't give a side like Arsenal a
helping hand like we did for that first goal. Lee has to take responsibility
for that - his back pass was suicidal.
"We talked about being more forceful in the second half but we didn't
do that - we could have beaten Newcastle on Saturday with the way we played
but it was all so different.
"It is all well and good to blame the managers or the coaches but I
didn't give a back pass out there. The players have to stand up and be
counted - they didn't do that. I will take the flack sometimes but not on
this occasion."
Crewe Boss Dismisses Rumour
Crewe boss Dario Gradi has
dismissed speculation linking Dean Ashton with a move to Molineux. Reports
have suggested that Wolves are ready to swoop for the youngster when the
transfer window opens next month.
But Gradi said: "Newspapers just go out to fuel speculation regarding
players and we don't take any notice.
"We only take anything seriously when a formal bid is made for one of
our players and then like always we sit down and consider it.
"With Dean there has been no bid from Wolves or anyone else and there
is nothing else to say," he told Crewe's official website.

Cash Promise
Wolves Chairman and owner Sir
Jack Hayward has promised to give money to boss Dave Jones to spend in the
January transfer window despite still wanting to sell the club.
The 80-year-old, who has spent £60 million already on the club, claims he
has yet to receive a good enough offer for the Molineux outfit.
Sir Jack said: "There have
been individuals expressing interest and saying what they are prepared to
put in, but not the right package.
"I hope something is in place for the January transfer window, but if
I'm still here and Dave asks for money to strengthen the team, we will try
to find something.
"I'm not going to say there's not a penny more just because I am
looking to hand over.
"We've worked to get to The Premiership and wouldn't want to give up
our place without a real fight.
"We have to stay in this division. That's essential."
Wolves Make Offer For Ilie
Wolves have confirmed that they
have held talks with the representatives of striker Adrian Ilie and are
awaiting a response on their offer.
The former Galatasaray and Valencia front man had been training with
Blackburn recently, before being recommended to Wolves boss Dave Jones by
Rovers boss Graeme Souness.
The Romanian international is currently without a club since leaving Alaves
in the summer but Jones has confirmed that the two parties have held talks
and are waiting on a response from the striker, with a short-term offer
being the most likely deal.
Jones said: "We've made
contact with Adrian's representatives and he knows what the offer is.
"Now we are waiting to hear back."
The Molineux boss went on to say that the club were right to want to look at
the player first before going straight into negotiations.
"When a player isn't playing and is available you have to ask yourself,
why?
"I don't think it is a problem for us to ask him to come here first and
for us to have a look at him."

Team News
Arsenal: welcome back
inspirational captain Patrick Vieira ahead of the fourth round Carling Cup
visit to Highbury of Wolves.
The French powerhouse starts his first match in nearly two months after a rushed
recovery attempt saw him aggrevate the injury further, but the ex-Milan man
says he is now raring to go.
The return of Vieira can not come soon enough for Gunners boss Arsene
Wenger, after it was revealed that Ray Parlour will be out for more than two
weeks after suffering a hamstring injury against Internazionale last week.
Wenger is well known for using
the tournament as a chance to blood some of his Highbury youngsters and the
match against Wolves is expected to be no different, although fit again
striker Sylvain Wiltord is also expected to return after shaking off a groin
problem.
Martin Keown and Lauren are suspended, while Czech Republic
Under-19 star Michael Papadopulos is expected to play some part in the
Arsenal frontline.
Wolves: boss Dave Jones
has doubts over the availability of full back Denis Irwin ahead of the game,
with the ex-Republic of Ireland international suffering with a sore toe
after Saturday's draw with Newcastle.
Scotland international Colin
Cameron is definitely out of Wolves' first venture into Highbury in 20 years
with a stomach complaint, although captain Paul Ince trained on Monday after
missing the weekend action and is expected to be included in the starting
XI.
Striker Steffen Iversen is
sidelined with a calf problem and central defender Isaac Okoronkwo has a
hamstring strain.
Goalkeeper Andy Marshall, who is
on loan from Ipswich Town, has been given permission to play by the Suffolk
club.
Transfer News
Wolves boss Dave Jones has been
keeping tabs on 20 year old Crewe striker Dean Ashton in recent weeks as he
bids to try and keep Wolves in the top flight.
Jones has already made it clear to his directors that he will need to
bolster his attack and defence when the transfer window opens in January.
And sources from inside Molineux have revealed that highly-rated £1.5m
Ashton (who is also being tracked by West Brom) is top of Jones' wish list.
Wolves are refusing to comment
over reports that striker Dean Sturridge could be poised for a loan move to
West Brom.
Sturridge has failed to make an impact with Wolves in the Premiership this
season and has been pushed down the pecking order since the arrival of Henri
Camara and Steffen Iversen.
A Molineux spokesman said: "Dean has travelled with the rest of the
squad for the (Carling Cup) game at Arsenal so there is nothing to report at
the moment."
But Sky are reporting that Baggies boss Gary Megson has enquired about
taking Wolves' experienced forward Sturridge on loan, with Lee Hughes
affected by off the field problems and Scott Dobie unavailable the Baggies
are short of options up front.
Sturridge has also attracted interest from First Division promotion chasers
Sheffield United.
Blades boss Neil Warnock watched Sturridge in reserve-team action on
Wednesday, with the 30-year-old netting Wolves' goal in a 2-1 defeat to
Everton.
Players To Visit Fan
The Wolves team is going to
visit Denise Butler who suffered a facial injury, the supporter who was hit
by a stray firework on Saturday.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey went to visit the season ticket holder in
hospital Saturday evening and chairman Sir Jack Hayward spoke with her on
the phone.
Jez said on WOW:
"Denise was in relatively good spirits when I saw her considering what
she had been through.
"I spent about 40 minutes talking with her. I wanted to tell her in
person how sorry we were that this accident had happened. We are a family
club and lots of us have relatives who sit in the Billy Wright stand. We
have all been upset by this incident but our main concern is for Denise and
a speedy recovery from her injuries.
"The manager and the team want to pay Denise a visit when she is
feeling up to it. She is a big Wolves fan, having supported the club for 30
years and told me she would really like to meeting the players, especially
Paul Ince."
