In the summer of 1953, the
first set of floodlights, comprising 60 lamps were erected at Molineux.
They were officially switched on later that year when a South Africa
national team came over to play a friendly on 30th September. Wolves then embarked on a series of floodlit matches,
beating Racing Club of Buenos Aires 3-1, Moscow Dynamo 2-1 and Spartak
Moscow 4-0, but of all their floodlit fixtures against foriegn opposition,
the match against the top Hungarian side Honved was the one that mattered.
Hungary, led by Ferenc Puskas, had beaten England 6-3 at Wembley in
November 1953 and the following summer emphasised their superiority by
winning 7-1 in Budapest. With English football at a low, the match between
Wolves and Honved took on a new meaning.
